The match starts tentatively with a lock-up, but Virus quickly gains control. Blue Panther places his foot in the fold of Virus’ leg to get leverage on an arm wringer. Blue Panther is in his sixties. His bridging on his head and hitting a monkey flip would be an impressive spot for someone forty years younger. Virus hones in his arm, with Panther opting to target his opponent’s leg. Virus controlling the bulk of the match isn’t how you’d expect this to go on paper, but it works and is a way to subvert expectations. Blue Panther rallies the crowd, and the pace begins to quicken. Panther hits a hurricanrana from the top rope and goes for a topé , but Virus places his foot on the post, twisting in mid-air and hitting an arm drag. They keep upping the ante with Blue Panther hitting a no-hands hurricanrana off the apron. The final stretch is brilliant. Blue Panther goes for a bit of misdirection, but he gets too fancy, and it costs him the match. I could go on and on about this match. Every hold had a purpose. Yes, it largely consisted of Blue Panther & Virus trading llaves, but hey, they’re some pretty sweet llaves! Besides, there are far worse ways to spend time than watching these two trade holds. An exercise in efficiency from two maestros.

A really fun slice of pro wrestling between two all time great wrestlers. This was 1 fall and in front of a silent japanese crowd, and the transitions weren't exactly hard fought, so the match felt a little like an exhibition. Still, there was plenty of excellent hold for hold work and some vicious brawling with Santito hitting especially stiff kicks. He even elbowed Panther in the face when he tried to block the Camel Clutch. That and him trying to prevent the Sharpshooter may have been my favourite moments of the match. Santito really had his working boots on and hit every spectacular dive he knows. I also liked how hard his flying headbutts connected.

[1998-01-09-CMLL] Blue Panther & Fishman vs Atlantis & Lizmark
Jetlag posted a topic in January 1998
Really fun little match with everyone hitting the mat. It's always fun to see Fishman with his working boots on and Atlantis having something to work with. The Panther/Lizmark sections were especially wonderful and it's pure crazy that these two never had a singles match. Nifty finish. It's hard to think CMLL didn't have the best TV in 1998.-

Another quality workrate trios from the CMLL crew which lacked maybe a slightly more stretched out opening to be be closer to the 4/24 trios. Still, all 3 falls were just excellent pro wrestling and it's really cool to see guys like Niebla and Aguila mix it up with the legends. This was worked technicos vs. Technicos so there is no rudo beatdown, however there is a general semblance of the greenhorns having to fight uphill against the savvy vets. For example Nieblas knee gets attacked in some pretty nasty moments, and Aguila eats a few boots to the face when getting too cute with his flying moves. Both Niebla and Aguila have some truely spectacular moves and Rivera holds up his end in a cool mat section against Santito. Some clever spots, Panther and Santito once again bust out a Doomsday Device variation in the middle of an exchange, I also loved Hijo del Santo's cheap dropkick in the 3rd fall. He also busted out his awesome diving headbutt->tope combo just to show these punks he's still the man. Also got a kick out of Blue Panther's tricky armlock getting a nice response. High quality stuff, the CMLL crew could do no wrong in 1998.

CMLL was ridiculously loaded with great wrestlers in the 90s. It was funny to watch Santito and Negro Casas working as a best buddy tag team complete with synchronized sequences and hot tag after their year long rivalry. This was a high end workrate tag, the afromentioned Santo/Casas double teames were extremely intricate and executed perfectly. Also, because Casas and Fuerza were somewhat feuding at this time („Somewhat“ because nothing really seemed to come out of it... thanks, CMLL bookers) their exchanges were pretty violent, Fuerza throwing punches and Negro booting him in the face. It may come as a shock since he's been a clown for so long, but once upon a time Mr. Niebla could bring the workrate too. Black Warrior took some huge bumps and hit a great dive. This hit all the spots.

These four wrestlers are in my ballot. Certainly the best Negro Casas match from this year. Solar and Blue Panther are old and they are past their prime but they can still deliver the goods on the mat. Just don't ask them to go on the third rope. The best part of the match are the interactions between Casas and Terry.

I did a podcast with LuchaWorld's Fredo Esparza talking about every candidate in the Lucha region of the Observer this week and we got into pretty much everyone, but would really enjoy the fine folks at PWO to give it a listen and see what the experts here think, whether you're a voter or just someone more interested in Lucha history I think this show hits on a few levels and we even go into a few meta topics like how important magazines were to Lucha Libre back in the old days, how hot things were in the 80s, how influential Los Misioneros are to Trios wrestling style, "cool" rudos, how awesome Sangre Chicana is, how big a star Huracán Ramirez was in the movies, and who the better dancer is between LA Park and Kraneo, among other things like a comprehensive bio of Ruben Juarez in Fredo's own words. it's hard to tell which way the wind is blowing in regards to the voters, but it was worth it just to talk about all these legends. I did my part to run point and hopefully came across well as outside of Juarez I was familiar with the rest. I really enjoyed the show and hopefully you enjoy it too.
