Loss Posted December 18, 2010 Author Report Share Posted December 18, 2010 Lawler wants Doug Gilbert to come out and explain himself after hitting Lawler with a chain from behind in the previous match. Gilbert says he knows what they did and they should really take this conversation off TV. Lawler says he has no idea what he's talking about and even accuses Gilbert of drug use! "I don't know what you were doing last night, because your brain ain't right." Doug finally admits that the problem is that Lawler wouldn't work on the Eddie Gilbert memorial. Lawler than cuts an amazing promo on Dennis Coraluzzo, saying Dennis once spread a rumor that he had illegitimate children running around Philly, so there was no way he was working for him. Doug says how could you put that ahead of Eddie after everything my brother did for you, and Lawler says instead of talking about what you and your brother did for me, let's talk about everything you and your brother did to me, and starts reading off a laundry list of past Memphis angles involving them both. Tommy Rich comes out to defend Doug against Lawler and Lawler brings up him costing him his hair in the Austin Idol match and the groin ringpost thing. Lawler tries to walk away, but Rich and Gilbert blindside him an end up giving him a spike piledriver on the studio floor. AMAZING angle, even better than it sounds. shoe Posted January 12, 2011 Report Share Posted January 12, 2011 This is such a great segment that helps build to a match. Lawler was great, but Doug kept up with him. Funny moment is when the heels attack Lawler Gilbert's gum comes flying out and it ends up in Lawler's hair. Booking 101 at its finest here. I don't agree with shoe that Gilbert keeps up with him, though he does keep up emotionally. I don't know the history here, but it sure feels like they're using true events to develop the angle. Random: all those mullets remind me that I grew a mullet my freshman year of college in TX. 1993, baby, and I cut it off after about one year. We called it a Billy Ray Cyrus cut back then. Don't remember if it is this feud or even during this calendar year (guess we shall see). Doug did a good job keeping pace well enough with Lawler. Gilbert kept throwing accusations at Lawler, then Lawler would take it and ramble on in an explanation. I guess in that role it keeps Gilbert from being walked on by Lawler. I do like how past events are always brought back up in Memphis. I wish WWE or now even TNA would gain some more mileage out of past angles. These three brought out like four or five angles from the past and incorporated it into why they hate each other. Lot of fun to watch, really enjoying the USWA stuff. Everybody involved plays their role to perfection, and if this went down on WWF or WCW it would be remembered as an all time great segment. Jerry tries to explain that has a lot to do with the promoter of the show. Bit awkward bringing up a deceased wrestler as part of the angle. Doug's delivery and natural charisma pales to Eddie but he can really bring some vindication at times and he feels that way here where I 100% believe he was slighted and justified for what Lawler did. Fun to watch especially after viewing the previous Yearbooks where we actually saw this business with Dennis Coraluzzo. The invoking of Eddie really doesn't feel exploitative--as has been mentioned a few times, Eddie was one guy who really would "have wanted it that way."
