End of Smothers v. Nightstalker match. Dirty White Boy runs down with a garbage can and uses scissors to shred the Confederate Flag. Nightstalker Adam Bomb with the powerbomb for the win. DWB handcuffs Traci in the ring while Nightstalker holds door to the lockerroom so no one can help. DWB sets the flag on fire in the middle of the ring and beats down Smothers before Rock-n-Roll and others make the save and put out the fire.

Effective segment.

Last few minutes only. Smothers is selling an arm injury between nice flying moves. Dirty White Boy is at ringside and is putting the Confederate flag in a trash can cutting it up, which distracts Smothers. He falls prey to a Nightstalker powerbomb and gets pinned, giving Nightstalker the TV title. Then DWB comes in the ring and handcuffs Tracy's good arm while Nightstalker blocks the locker room door so no one can make the save. Then he burns the Confederate flag! DWB is a babyface! Okay, maybe not. Finally, the Rock & Rolls and Tim Horner make the save, Horner with a fire extinguisher, and DWB bails. Nice angle.

You don't say.;)

Clarke has made quite a bit of progress since he showed up in 1990 in WCW. With his look and impressive moves, I really never got why he was never pushed hard in WWF. Nice little TV match, good angle at the end, although the whole confederate flag waving babyface is still kinda odd to watch.

The Dirty White Boy had declared himself a proud Yankee, which was a genius gimmick--as someone else pointed out in another one of these threads, Cornette was a genius for devising specific heat-drawing gimmicks for this area of the country. I'm not sure where the DWB/Nightstalker alliance came from, but having Nightstalker hold the locker room door shut was great. Burning the Confederate flag is whatever, but the visual is cool and DWB's handcuffing and attack are done well.

DWB out to cut up Smothers' confederate flag and throw it in the garbage, letting Nightstalker power bomb him for the pin and win the TV title. DWB then handcuffs him to the ropes while Nightstalker holds the locker room door shut to keep anyone from saving. DWB brings the flag in the ring and sets it on fire. Crazy that burning the confederate flag is a heel move. Finally some faces save and put the fire out. Solid stuff, but being a year plus ahead of this, I definitely prefer Dirty White Boy as a heel.

With Smothers in control Tony Anthony runs back out, gets his attention and in full view of him starts cutting up the confederate flag. This distraction allows the Nightstalker to hit the powerbomb and become the new TV champion. The Dirty White Boy rips up the flag and then gets in the ring to attack Smothers. He handcuffs him to the rope, the Nightstalker blocks the dressing room door so no-one can come to his aid and Anthony burns the confederate flag in full view of Smothers. The Rock & Roll Express and Tim Horner eventually break through and carrying an extinguisher they put the fire out and see the Dirty White Boy off.

I vaguely remember watching Tony and Ron do the proud Yankee from New York City bit on the SMW set, and I agree that it's a great heel gimmick to use in the Smoky Mountain area, particularly on a Southern patriot like Tracy. Would it fly today? Of course not, and even if it could, there's no one that could pull it off the way Tony and Ron did.

The beating on Tracy's shoulder seemed plenty snug, and Clarke didn't look too awful in what little we saw.

Dutch called a flying elbow from Tracy a dropkick, but that's understandable considering how far Tracy's feet went into the air when he hit it.

How did Corny get permission to burn the Confederate flag in a crowded building deep in the heart of the Confederacy? Did he even bother? This kind of angle seems pretty touchy considering the time and place.

I remember Tracy once saying that this angle worked so well in the area that the sponsors of the house shows (i.e. the Vol. Fire Departments, Civic groups which were all full of Klan members) told him that if he ever needed help with DWB, they'd be there for him. Just because White Boy torched the Rebel Flag. Thank God the Gangstas never pulled that trick.
