[1993-11-27-USWA-TV] Brian Christopher vs PG-13

Jeff comes out with both the tag title and the Unified title. Jarrett decides before the match that the tag titles aren't worth it and refuses to defend the title because the Unified title is a bigger priority. Jarrett hands the belt to Eddie Marlin, Christopher is mystified, and PG-13 insists on having the match now, so this leaves Brian Christopher to defend the belts by himself, which he insists on doing. He puts up a strong effort which gets him over really strong as a babyface, but in the end, succumbs to the numbers game and PG-13 takes the tag titles, exactly as they should have. Fun match, but great booking and a great segment.

Jeff is on to bigger and better things now that he has the Unified Title. He doesn't want to take risks defended the Tag Titles as there is no benefits to it. So he hands over the belt to Eddie Marlin. It a reasonable thing to do but he probably should have discussed it with Christopher beforehand. Christopher is willing to defend the tag titles himself as does not want to forfeit his title also. He was not given an option of a substitute partner and PG13 win the belts.

And it looks like Dubba J's turning heel on his way out of the territory. Now that he's the Unified champion he can't concern himself with tag title defenses. Christopher's only option is to either forfeit the rest of the titles or go it alone, so he goes it alone. Well, if Christopher wasn't firmly entrenched as a babyface before, this oughta do it. Really fun match follows with the crowd backing Christopher all the way, but a foreign object to the back fo the head nets PG-13 the tag titles.

Dave Brown is about to uncover this controversy and the object in Wolfie D's pocket, when out come Mike Anthony & Jeff Gaylord. Gaylord has improved tremendously since we last saw him, as he's able to spit out an entire sentence without fucking it up. PG-13 beg off defending the belts, but will do it if Anthony puts up his hair.

Good stuff--the best non-WWF USWA stuff we've seen this year, in fact. The USWA hasn't had a tag team anchor since the end of the big Moondogs feud, and now they do.

I liked how the booking backed Brian into a corner, which ensured that Brian was the face and Jeff was the heel. It would have been so easy for Pops to come out and back up his boy, if only for one match, but then Jeff wouldn't have been such a lowdown snake for poterntially costing Brian the tag belts without at least discussing it with him beforehand. At the same time, Dave and Corey didn't get on Jeff's case too badly, even admitting that he perhaps had a point about both titles being too much to handle. Of course, the fans know that's bunk, since Lawler has pulled double duty on the same card many times over the years, and has probably held singles and tag gold at the same time at least once.

The match itself was a lot more seriously wrestled than the previous match; PG-13 put their schtick aside and put their energy into fighting Brian straight up. Neither Jamie nor Wolfie is too big for Brian to believably beat, so even with the numbers advantage, the bout wasn't exactly in PG-13's back pocket from the start. Indeed, it took a foreign object for them to score the win, which seems like a copout finish but serves to underscore just how hard Brian fought. Besides, what kind of chickenshits use a foreign object to beat a guy when they have the numbers advantage?

The postmatch was a bit underwhelming to me, mostly because we don't see Anthony and Gaylord's match with PG-13. But I liked how they (PG-13) sidestepped the demands for Wolfie to show what was in his hand. I also admired their guts for demanding that Anthony put up his hair in exchange for a title match. But what about Brian? Who's he going to get as a partner for his mandated rematch? I know most of the world would love to see the King in his corner, but now that Pops is hot on Jeff's trail that may not be possible.

Eddie was used just right here; he warned Brian against the match once Jeff had forfeited, but didn't insist that Brian either get a partner (even though that would have meant that the belts wouldn't have been on the line) or forfeit his belt just because Jeff had done the same. As for PG-13, they had a point about wanting the match they'd earned, and they pursued it as respectfully as their characters allowed, which worked so much better than whining about what cowards Jeff and Brian were.

Overall, I agree with Pete about this being the best non-WWF segment that Memphis had had this year, although I guess you could claim that Jeff was in a sense playing Double J. Still, it's nice to know that the USWA can still create compelling angles almost completely on their own, since they'll have to do more of that in the future with Lawler's WWF involvement over, at least for the moment.

Jarrett looked like a huge prick here and Christophers acting during the segment was really strong too as he was flabbergasted that Jarrett was just giving up the title. LOL at Eddie Marlin saying Christopher can't beat three guys "even though one is small." This was pretty sudden right turn in Jarrett turning heel after we just saw the Fabulous video a week or so before. The match was a hell of a lot of fun with Christopher having the crowd fully behind him but getting beat when JC ICe hits him with a weapon that he stuffs into his shorts. Interview afterward is fun with Dave wanting him to empty his pockets and we go right back into the new batch of challengers with Gaylord and Anthony. PG-13 says they will put the belts on the line if Anthony puts up his hair. **3/4 for the match a great USWA segment.
