Amazing how much they have to darken arenas at TV tapings by this time, compared to the bright lights of the early part of the year. Bret is getting criticized for defending his title too often, and Flair has predicted it will be his downfall. Bobby Heenan leaves the broadcast booth in an attempt to put Bret in his place. Heenan suddenly introduces Flair in the middle of Bret's interview, which is funny. Flair does a really fast-paced verbal smackdown on Bret, which is pretty great. Flair talking about women and belts and being The Man, and finally, he's RIC FLAIR, but too little too late. Heenan then introduces Razor Ramon, whose overly slow talking just kills this, considering Flair and Heenan doing some great work before this. Bret punches him, perhaps for killing the segment. Flair and Razor are working over Bret, but Mr. Perfect makes the save and we've got ourselves a brawl. Randy Savage has disappeared off the planet apparently. Great segment despite Razor, and good to see Bret finally mixed in with the top guys, which he really needed.

Kind of awkward to have both Flair and Razor talk about beating Bret for the title. Especially Flair, who is supposed to have a shot first. You'd think he would take exception to Razor even assuming Bret would make to to the Rumble with the title.

This is how I felt. Flair and Ramon are a combo at this point but you are pretty much saying to Flair that Hart will face Ramon at Royal Rumble unless Flair beats Hart before them. It's just presented in a way that Flair won't do it though.

Hart is out for a boring promo, which Heenan thankfully interrupts and then brings out Flair and both of them make this segment. They're promoting an upcoming Flair title shot and Ramon's at the Rumble which seems like a nice long build. Razor & Flair jump Hart, then Perfect out for save. Nothing too exciting and didn't seem to ever result in a big tag match.

This wasn't bad, and it was nice to see Heenan as an integral part of an angle for what may be the last time in the WWF. But Flair was screaming so loudly it was hard to understand him, and Hall isn't the promo I thought he'd be from his vignettes. It's fine to talk slowly, but not only does he talk too slowly, but he doesn't say much of note except "oozing machismo". As catchphrases go, "the bad guy" was a thousand times better. Who in their right mind would want to ooze anything?

Bret wasn't bad, but I can see where using technical wrestling skill as a talking point wouldn't thrill too many people. I'm surprised he didn't use "the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be" as a tagline; we first saw it used in the WWF Slam video.

The brawl was all right for a podium pull-apart, and it's nice to see Curt fully involved physically again. Bret/Curt-Flair/Hall would probably have happened at some point if Flair hadn't been leaving soon, and it would have been a good house show main event series. The commentary during the brawl was brutal, though: Vince yelling "WHAT IS GOING ON?" when he can see what's going on right in front of him was bad enough, but Lawler saying that Flair and Hall taught Bret and Curt a lesson when they (Flair and Hall) were clearly driven off the platform was too much. He's going to be one of those delusional heel commentators for whom no babyface can ever do right, and that type does nothing but drive me crazy, and not in a good way either. The Bret feud had better be worth it in the ring, because otherwise I'll be firmly in the "Lawler should have stayed in Memphis full-time" camp.
