Meltzer is hinting that the final angle was kind of a shoot and Hunter is really taking over

So is the storyline that ended Raw tonight, which at least to an extent mirrored real life since HHH has been groomed all year to be taking over for Vince to head the company.

More later tonight.

Okay things just got interesting real fast again

After the rave reactions the PPV got, I actually watched the Cena-Punk match today and like most, thought it was great. I'm a lapsed fan, the last time I watched Raw was the night Bret came back and before that it was around 02/03 when I just couldn't justify it to myself anymore. I actually made it a point to catch the end of Raw tonight to see where they were going with it. What I saw was a long, badly acted mic interaction between Trips and Vince. It was like it was 02/03 all over again. It was my own fault.

The great Darren Rovell of CNBC just posted this on Twitter

If HHH has really taken over for Vince McMahon, WWE's stock is going to plummet tomorrow. Shares already down 31% year to date. The #1 material risk against WWE stock is Vince McMahon leaving the business. Tonight's plot could be an SEC violation.

He also said that about the exploding limo angle.

I liked the closing angle, but if people are down on it, it's because they were expecting something cool with Punk and they didn't get it. Of course it was underwhelming compared to Sunday, or last week's Raw. Punk is the hottest star in the business and he wasn't there.

Really my biggest issue with the whole episode tonight is that in the world of pro wrestling, where the Heavyweight title is the goal everyone is fighting for, the finals of a title tournament for the most important prize in the company was pushed aside for "more important business." - one night after the belt was made to look like the absolute most important thing in the company.

Nothing should be presented as more important than the top championship. Makes the tourny, title and eventual winner look totally unimportant, even if the real champion was sitting at the Cubs game tonight.

So, I really, really disliked how unimportant the whole tournament came off as a result. They made a championship tournament just look like filler programming before the final segment and Rey Mysterio had to just "aw shucks" his way out of the ring after McMahon played down his huge opportunity.

I will say I think how everything is handled 1-2-3 months down the road will really tell the story here. There's still plenty of memorable things that can happen.

I kind of saw it as HHH taking over the on screen authority figure "chairman" role to match his growing backstage power. I'm sure Vince will always be around as a figurehead King of WWE role until the day he dies anyway.

Also how funny is it to see financial types acting like WWE storylines are real, I thought it was only us dumb, poor rasslin' fans who thought that way.

Also also, has there been a rash of things Dave has been wrong about that would make this story his Waterloo?

If Dave ends up being wrong about the Vince/HHH thing signaling the real transition then he will pretty much lose all remaining credibility, right?

That's not really what he said. He said it was a storyline, but that it mirrors real-life in that HHH is being groomed to take over for Vince.

Wade Keller says that HHH is being groomed just in case something happens to Vince, which is what I would rather believe, because I don't have the faith in HHH that others do. And Vince is still capable of giving us stuff like last night, or the Taker-HBK rematch build up and payoff.

Tonight was mostly flat, but I haven't lost faith in the Punk angle. He spent the night at Wrigley tweeting photos of himself screwing around with the WWE title and posing with players. That's awesome enough to keep me interested.

We already knew that, though. It's been public for a long time. And Dave treated it as a developing story which he wouldn't for just the angle.

As far as the Waltman thing goes, it could be legit and still affect the stock price. From the WWE 10-K filing:

The unexpected loss of the services of Vincent K. McMahon could adversely affect our ability to create popular characters and creative storylines or could otherwise adversely affect our operating results.

In addition to serving as Chairman of our Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. McMahon leads the creative team that develops the storylines and the characters for our televised programming and live events. Mr. McMahon, from time to time, has also been an important member of our cast of performers. The loss of Mr. McMahon due to unexpected retirement, disability, death or other unexpected termination for any reason could have a material adverse effect on our ability to create popular characters and creative storylines or could otherwise adversely affect our operating results.

If Dave didn't mean to imply it meant the transition was underway he should've been less vague and dropped the tease.

That seems like a pretty clear delineation between the storyline and real life to me. The headline 'Vince fired, HHH takes over' was a tease to get clicks, but in the article itself Dave made explicit the difference between kayfabe and shoot.
