[1994-09-11] Sabu vs Al Snow

I have to laugh at Damien being Sabu's second during this, but I also have to admit that he's pretty good at it. This is better than most Sabu matches, with far more of a wrestling focus than normal, most of the spots being hit pretty cleanly and Snow's mostly grounded style acting as a nice contrast for Sabu's more reckless stuff. Sabu wins the match after doing some crazy stuff with chairs and tables before the omnipresent Terry Funk shows up and puts a beating on Damien, and this is why this is on the yearbook, as what happens from here is pretty indy famous. Funk and Sabu end up brawling around the ringside area, with Sabu taking some nasty bumps on the building floor and on chairs. Damien ducks a Snow chairshot and Funk eats it, which makes this a three-way brawl. Camera shaking adds to this crazy scene of Funk hitting Snow with a toolbox before swearing at I think Bob Barnett, who's filming this. Sabu does his celebratory table break and you think this is over, then you see that Snow and Funk are throwing furniture at each other in the corner of the building. They end up fighting into the ring and having a nice little brawl before Funk jumps in the middle of the crowd. They immediately form a circle around him. Then we go to the parking lot and Funk is hiding under a van for some reason before coming out and yelling at a laid out referee. Quite the scene.

Much better than their ladder match from earlier on set. Sabu is really on with his high risk moves with little botches of the moves. Wrestling is pretty good between both guys also. Sabu threw an unfolded chair at the back of Snow's head which looked like it could really hurt. After the match, Funk shows up and things go crazy. He just launches Sabu in the air into the third row of chairs in the audience. Quite the spill. Post match is just something you have to see as the live crowd just seems to eat it up.

This match is far and away better than their ladder match previously. It's mixed in with some great spots from Sabu and solid chain wrestling in the early going. There were a few things I didn't much care for like Snow's weak arm bar and later random head scissors to call the next spot. Damien was amusing as Sabu's second and does do a nice job but I have an issue with getting completely into Sabu matches like this because his second becomes far too involved sometimes. The post-match smokes the match itself and then some. I mean the brawl features Terry Funk, Sabu, Al Snow, and Damien fighting in a school gym somewhere in middle America. Nothing tops that shit. There are reasons why I love Terry Funk. This is a perfect example of why. That brawl was fucking great and one of the best Indy brawls ever. The unforgettable scene of Terry cursing out bystanders, the camera man, Al Snow, and a beaten referee while hiding under a van is one of the reasons why I still watch wrestling. His triumphant walk out is tremendous as he stumbles down the sidewalk in a random neighborhood under the sunset asking for his "goddamn hat."

Snow rocking the Eddy Guerrero 'stache. Is this Damian guy Damian Kane or somebody else? I actually thought it was Pat Tanaka when I first saw him. Oh, wow, it's the actual Damian from Mexico. The fuck is he doing here? Anyway, this had most of the same flaws as the ladder match--total my-turn/your-turn stuff, and the selling is just nonexistent. Damian gets put through a table and he's back up interfering like 30 seconds later. It is tighter and Sabu hits all of his spots well, at least. The post-match is the reason to tune in, as Terry Funk does a run-in and things descend into total chaos. Not back-and-forth shit like in the match, but a total wild scene with every weapon available being used and everyone beating the shit out of everyone else and Funk being a total unstoppable force of nature. Sabu takes an insane bump over like 6 rows of chairs and then Funk heaves a seat at him from about 20 feet away, that damn near kills like a 6-year old girl hidden in the back. I can see why this was a sensation at the time, and with the "you are there" POV-style camera angle it appears to be a blast live.
