Clip from MSC. Every Memphis Finish Ever. Lawler pins Cobra with a hidden chain (I'm growing tired of this finish after 6 yearbooks). But Jerry Calhoun finds the chain and restarts the match. JYD pins Soultaker quickly after a restart. Lawler is not happy about this back in the studio. JYD sends in a taped promo pointing out that he has a little bit of twisted steel, and no sex appeal at all! Lawler wants to know if anyone understood anything he said. He said he traced JYD's family tree back to when he used to live in one!

A Lawler pin on Cobra is overturned when Jerry Calhoun finds Lawler's chain and restarts the match. JYD quickly gets a pin on Soultaker, and when Lawler rants on the mic after the match, comes back to the ring and headbutts him out for another pin! This gives the Dog a shot at the Unified title. JYD sends in quite a good babyface promo that would be a great one if he'd had an editor--as it is he tries to cram in about 37 catchphrases and sort of lost me when he talked about salt, pepper, and good cookin'. The stuff before that was great--worthy of Dusty, even. It's too bad JYD was in such abysmal shape because his charisma and mic skills could have been something to offer still on a national level.

Lawler gets in a dig about JYD's family tree and how his parents are in the iron & steel business (his mother irons, his father steals), then gets serious about the new environment Dog is going to find himself in now that the title's on the line.

JYD is pretty portly at this point.

Dave Brown continues to be awesome.

It's hard not to think that JYD couldn't have been utilised usefully in some non-wrestling capacity somehow. He is still a pretty great promo.

I might not be in the right mood for Lawler this evening, but I'm finding some of this stuff from him a bit tedious.

Tremendous promo duel between two masters, and for once in his life the King comes in second, although it's close. I only hope the Memphis match that they were hyping was better than the Dallas bout we saw earlier on the set (though that match stinking as badly as it did was mostly Lawler's fault, not JYD's).

Again, Lawler's heavily cheered by the WMC audience despite his best effort at being despicable, although I'm betting that the Dog had more than his share of fans two days later at MSC.

Jerry Lawler doesn’t want them to show the end of the tag team match. He says how the last time they showed a tape he didn’t want them to, he had to go up to the booth and set someone straight and doesn’t want to do that again. He’s going to hold Dave Brown responsible and Dave says it’s not his fault but the fans want to see it.

King Cobra has Lawler covered after a headbutt, but Jerry Calhoun is on the outside with the JYD and the Soultaker. Cobra goes over to get Calhoun, and with his back turned, Lawler pulls a chain out of his boot, wraps it around his fist and nails Cobra with it. Lawler covers him and Calhoun gets back in the ring to count the pin. The Dog and the crowd tell Calhoun that Lawler used a chain. After a struggle he gets the chain off The King and restarts the match. JYD headbutts the Soultaker and rolls him up for the win almost immediately after the re-start, and then pins Lawler after the match for good measure.

Back in the studio and Jerry Lawler isn’t happy. Who ever heard of re-starting a match? He beat King Cobra 1-2-3 and as far as he was concerned, the match was over. When Dave says what about that chain that he had wrapped around his fist? The King tells him that he’s seeing things again and that he conveniently only sees what he wants to see. He didn’t see what they used on the Soultaker and him (which was nothing)! He tells Dave that they live in a great country where you can be anything you want to be, did you want to be an idiot?

Junkyard Dog promo and he says that Jerry Lawler is known as ‘The King’ throughout the state of Tennessee and the world, the number one man in professional wrestling and he’s proven that he can be beaten and now his title is on the line. He hasn’t forgotten about the Soultaker either, as he knows that Lawler paid him and he’s coming for him too.

Lawler echo’s my thoughts exactly and asks Dave if he could understand anything that the Junkyard Dog said? Dave is down with the jive and says that he certainly could (really Dave?). The King says that the Junkyard Dog is so stupid that he wanted to send Mr T a fan letter but couldn’t spell his last name! He says that he doesn’t wrestle anybody without checking them out first; he wants to know their background, how they think, how they live, everything about them. He’s checked out the Dog’s family tree and traced it back to when they live in one! His parents, like King Cobra’s, are in the iron and steel business, his mother irons and his father steals! The Junkyard Dog isn’t worthy of wearing the World Heavyweight title belt and he’s going to beat him like a dog in Memphis, TN, his home town, in front of his fans! Just because he jumped him from behind last week and Jerry Calhoun was there to count 1-2-3 he thinks that puts him in line for a World title shot? Well it’ll be a different story this week when it’s just the two of them.

The JYD’s promo was unnecessarily long with far too much waffle dragging it out. You can tell that the guy is charismatic but, for me, this wasn’t good. Another great, serious Lawler promo building the upcoming match between them. A touch of racism again here and The King was getting his fair share of cheers from the studio audience whilst doing his best to remain heelish.
