Ric Flair in the AWA? Yep. Flair and Woman hype Flair's arrival in the Twin Cities. Flair talks about his history with Verne Gagne. Flair seems especially excited to be a traveling champ again.

 

This is followed by some waaay over-the-top graphics hyping Twin Wars to the tune of "The Final Countdown". Minnesota will explode! Seriously!

Woman looks incredibly fetching in that lime green dress. Flair takes shots at Wade Wilson and Kent Hrbek and invokes his history training under Verne Gagne. MINNESOTA WILL EXPLODE--I have visions of Minneapolis and St. Paul descending into civil war.

Strange seeing Flair in this setting and agree that he looks fired up. Shame the match with Pillman is not on tape judging by their earlier WCW match.

Ric Flair is returning to Minnesota and bringing the World Championship. He makes some Minnesota sports failure references. Commercial for joint card of NWA and AWA. Interesting to see NWA doing business with AWA at this point.

Good Flair promo. It must have been a big deal for him to wrestle in the AWA at this point, as I suspect they'd have had problems drawing even in Minnesota at this point without him. I wonder if he name dropped Kent Hrbek knowing Herbie was a big wrestling fan (I believe he even talked of getting into the business after he retired, though that obviously never happened).

 

The ensuing video is 90s cheese, but it does make the show seem like a big deal, so mission accomplished.

Great Flair promo; as was said above, the thought of coming back home seems to have energized him. The commercial gets cut off; Zbyszko defended against Nikita Koloff, with Nick Bockwinkel acting as guest referee for both bouts. It seems like they were building for a second show with a title for title Flair/Zbyszko main event that obviously never happened.

 

One question: Wouldn't it have made more sense for Zenk to get the title shot against Flair since he was a native of the Twin Cities? Why give it to Pillman?

Wow I've never heard of this event before. Woman seems more fired up than usual in the promo.

Woman tells St. Paul to look out because the ‘Nature Boy’ is coming your way! Flair says that this is the triumphant return of the ‘Nature Boy’ himself, of the World champion to the Twin Cities. He’s not Wayne Wilson, he’s not Kent Hrbek, but when he tells you he’s the greatest wrestler alive today you rush out and buy a ticket, because everyone in Minnesota should thank their God they believe in, that Ric Flair is coming home. He’s facing Brian Pillman, an up and coming young star with a big reputation, a former professional football player. Big deal, this is professional wrestling! Years ago Verne Gagne made him pay his dues to get in this sport and if you asked him today what he’s all about, he’ll say he doesn’t like Ric Flair, but he’s all man and he’s the World Champion. In St. Paul he’s going to take the Twin Cities one notch beyond!

 

‘Two wrestling powers, two World Champions, Twin Wars ’90 is coming to the Twin Cities!’ For the first time in Twin Cities history, both the AWA and NWA World Heavyweight championships will be defended on the same card.

 

He seemed excited to be returning home, but the Flair promo really didn’t do much for me. It felt as though it was the kind of thing that he could cut in his sleep. Nice to see Woman a bit more animated and contribute more than she has been doing recently. Cool little advert to promote the event and it made it feel like a big deal, even though with the AWA on its last legs, it really isn’t.

Seriously?!? The Pillman match hyped here is not on tape??? Well, we can imagine how amazing it was anyway. Good promo and Woman in 1990 is absolutely stunning. She still looks good in 1998-9, but you could see how the industry had worn her down a little bit. Here she is just gorgeous.
