[1990-06-15-USWA Texas] Interview: Percy Pringle / Kerry Von Erich vs Matt Borne

Percy does a classy promo before the match, pointing out that Kerry may be the next one of Fritz's sons who gets buried six feet under. It doesn't even get much heat, so there you go. I don't know why they act like Kerry is the last son. What about Kevin?

Percy gets mouthy with Chris at ringside and at this point, they are getting more of the focus than Kerry/Borne, which reeks of Jerry Jarrett trying to bully Kerry into taking a pay cut or something. Nothing they've done since the parking lot brawl has hit that level, even if all of their matches have good qualities. Borne takes a bump right on the cameraman. Chaotic scene from there, as Tony Borne is accidentally knocked down by Kerry, Percy Pringle pulls out handcuffs to try to lock up Chris and the tables are turned on him and the heels are laying as this segment ends. This feud had some real promise early on.

"Percy Pringle...Chris is gonna be on you like stink on shit!"

Cool opening promo aside, this is the least of the Kerry/Borne matches as most of the focus is on Chris and Percy, to the point where Kerry and Borne are actively fighting outside of camera range so we can see what the seconds are doing. Percy tries to handcuff Chris to the ropes and gets cuffed himself, and then Tony Borne--where'd HE come from??--gets knocked down somehow. DCOR and this peters out rather quickly.

Pringle wants Fritz to come down to help Chris since he’s the only son he has left. Sheesh. Chris will be Kerry’s corner. Kerry says Chris wants a piece of anything he can get.

Kerry gets on the mic and says a bad word that gets bleeped out. Couple punches from Kerry and he goes for the Claw very early. They disappear briefly but return ring side. Borne uses the whoopie cushion. I presume it has another name. Kerry tries for the stomach claw. Cameraman gets knocked off the apron. Percy tries to handcuff Chris to the ropes but Chris manages outsmart Pringle. Kerry and Chris leave as this match rules double count out. When Borne is on the offense stuff is good but Kerry doesn’t have much of a response.

Well this turned into a real cluster. Feels like this program has run out of steam, and their effort to keep it going with Pringle and Chris has actually had the opposite effect; it's taken too much focus from what had been a hot issue. Part of the problem is Kerry's vast limitations at this point but they also don't appear to know what to do with Borne post-turn either.

This was more about Percy/Chris than Kerry/Borne. It's almost like Jarrett knew that both of these guys were leaving and decided to transfer the issue to the two guys who would be sticking around.

Where did Tony Borne come from? Matt doesn't mention his father being decked in any subsequent promos, and you'd figure that he'd be raging with anger and threatening to do the same to Fritz, whether Fritz actually shows up or not.

Why would Kerry use the phrase "stink on shit" when he knew full well that he'd be bleeped on television? Yes, other babyfaces have done similar things, but these are still the clean-cut, God-fearing Von Erichs in Bible Belt Texas; you'd think they'd try just a bit harder to control their mouths.

As several people said above me, the actual match in the ring really wasn't the story here; if it had been, the cameras would have followed Kerry and Borne outside instead of watching Chris and Percy flap their gums at each other.

With Kerry/Borne almost over and Dundee/Tatum shifting to Memphis, it looks like it'll be up to Adams, Austin, and their ladies to carry USWA Texas for the next little while. We'll see if they're up to the task as we move forward.

The USWA report opens by replaying the interview from 6/9 where Percy tells Fritz to come and get his son, otherwise he’ll have another that ends up six feet under. I actually thought this was originally aimed at Chris, but it seems to be aimed at Kerry, although it still doesn’t make sense as Fritz has three sons that are alive at this point.

Kerry follows up and he’s wearing a nice blue ‘World Class Championship Wrestling’ vest. He says how Chris was going to pretend that he had an injury and then knock Percy out, and that’s exactly what he did. The match has been signed for Friday night and Chris is going to be in his corner. He’s looking good, he’s feeling good and he’s just happy to be a part of the last Von Erich coming into wrestling. Hmmm, Kerry’s interview here is more about putting his brother Chris over as opposed to his feud with Matt Borne.

Onto the match and Kerry and Borne haven’t even locked up and the focus appears to be more on Percy and Chris at ringside. Kerry even gets on the house mic and tells Percy that Chris will be on him like ‘stink on shit’ (which is bleeped out). I really liked Borne’s offense and his brawling, especially the forearms when they were on the outside, but his bumping seemed greatly exaggerated. Playing off a previous match they have another brawl to the back, although instead of following them the camera concentrated on Chris and Percy arguing with each other. Same pet peeve as last time they brawled to the back, in that they were out of the ring for 54 seconds this time. There is a great spot though where Borne comes off the top with a ‘whoopee cushion’ and Kerry catches him with a stomach claw. The ending is a mess as Borne whips Kerry into the turnbuckles, charges at him, but Kerry moves and he takes a bump over the top turnbuckle to the floor wiping out the cameraman in the process. With this distraction Percy pulls out some handcuffs and attaches them to the bottom rope, whilst in the background you can see Kerry nail Tony Borne (who’s turned up from somewhere) with a discus punch. Percy tries to cuff Chris but in the struggle he is the one who ends up getting handcuffed (they were his keys so surely he had the key?) and Kerry appears that he didn’t realise it was Tony Borne when he struck him. Match is ruled a double count out and Kerry gets Chris out of there whilst a handcuffed Percy whines ‘nobody does this to me!’.

This feud is sizzling out fast. I said that the cage match was the worst match of the three they’ve had, but this was worse than that. It again had its moments, but the focus was more about Percy and Chris as opposed to Kerry and Matt. Not sure where Tony Borne came from and I only noticed what had happened when watching a second time as I’d completely missed it first time. I know that Percy and Chris end up involved in the Steve Austin and Chris Adams feud, I just hope that they don’t have the same effect on that one as they did on this.
