Embry is the king of sleaze, and this is excellent. He hypes a Texas Death Match with Eddie Gilbert in a terrific promo.

We cut to a chain match between the two from Mid South Coliseum. Gilbert is very over as a babyface at this point, which is just crazy to me. Match looks pretty violent from what we see, including a spot where Embry wraps Gilbert around the ringpost by throat with the chain so he can repeatedly punch him in the face. In a crazy finish, Embry sprays GREEN MIST at Gilbert after a ref bump, then touches all four corners for the win. Wow! The Pearl of the Lone Star State ...

Gilbert comes into the studio for an interview. Gilbert wouldn't overly generalize and say all people from Texas are bad, but the ugliest girl in Tennessee is prettier than the prettiest girl in Texas. Gilbert does an awesome Embry impersonation.

These interviews and the match clip were really effective at making me want to see Monday night's match.

Embry talks about the imminent unveiling of Miss Texas, a Texas Death Match with Eddie Gilbert, and a Texas Brawl (bunkhouse stampede) all in one magnificent promo. Embry is such an arrogant, sleazy jackass. His best overall promo was the one shortly before the Cage Match to Decide Everything against PY Chu-Hi, but this is not far behind--and easily his best heel promo.

Chain match highlights from the Pipkin Building follow. Embry becomes the first wrestler in recorded history to actually attempt to RUN to touch all four corners as quickly as he can--a daring strategem that does not pay off, but the effort was there. After some really good action, Paul Neighbors gets bumped and misses Gilbert touching all four corners. Embry then unleashes GREEN MIST (??!!!) and that gets him the victory. I guess this is part of the Tojo Yamamoto connection but that's the most hilariously incongruous green mist gimmick in the history of wrestling--they may as well follow up by bringing in Kendo Nagasaki and have him wear loud suits and carry a tennis racket. Gilbert covered with blood and mist is a pretty disgusting sight.

Gilbert sticks up for some of the few good apples in Texas but declares that the ugliest girl in Tennessee looks a lot better than the prettiest girl in Texas--and then he gets into a DEAD-ON impersonation of Embry which is fantastic even if I'm not sure the studio audience grasps the genius of it. Gilbert as the babyface with an edge is so much better than Gilbert as WCW babyface that it's absurd.

Embry talks about Miss Texas. He doesn’t want to bring her on TV because all the men will leave their wives. We got a Texas Death match coming up with Eddie Gilbert.

Clips of chain match. Gilbert getting chocked around the ring post at one point. Embry ends up using the green mist! Nice to see something different besides chains.

Gilbert puts over the women of Tennessee being hotter than Texas chicks. Eddie does a brief Embry impression. Wanted to hear more of that.

Embrys logic sounds correct in not wanting to reveal Miss Texas to the toothless female fans

chain match looks really violent and the green mist was interesting way to end the match.

Eddies promo is super and Im constantly impressed with how well he has fit in as a babyface. His Embry impersonation is spot on.

This was a great segment from start to finish. The promo battle between Embry and Gilbert was every bit as good as I hoped it would be, and I can officially say that this heel run has eclipsed his Texas babyface run as my favorite version of Embry. He's not just sleazy; he's psychotically, deliciously EVIL here. I loved his explanation of why he wouldn't bring Miss Texas to the WMC studio, and as you'd expect, he's celebrating his "retirement" of Lawler. Eddie fires back on some (but not all) Texans, and in a moment that's truly inspired, begs both Embry and Tojo to make him bleed and hurt as much as they can in the upcoming Texas Death match: "MAKE ME BLEED, ERIC!"

What we see of the chain match looks positively brutal, and given who Embry's been palling around with, even the green mist doesn't seem that far-fetched; it adds to his reputation as one of the most unpredictable wrestlers in the world today. I wonder why Eddie didn't get at least a bit suspicious when he was able to touch all four corners so easily, but he's so cocky that the spot feels plausible, even against a dastardly heel like Embry.

I have a suspicion that it was Lawler whom Embry referred to as Eddie's best buddy during his promo. Just weeks ago, I couldn't imagine any wrestler making that claim for any reason whatsoever. Talk about the tide turning quickly!
