[1991-07-06-WCW-Power Hour] Steve Austin vs Bobby Eaton

Austin looks good here and wins the TV title, and Jeanne, billed as Lady Blossom, has replaced Vivacious Veronica, which is a big improvement. I do think Austin in the big leagues looks a little more green than he did in the USWA, but he still looks like a guy putting it all together. Putting the TV title on him so quickly was a strong sign of confidence from Dusty.

Austin definitely carried a star presence and worked extremely hard. It's a little weird that he needed several years to round out the package, given his tools. But he was working in an extremely flawed setting. Eaton looked good as always -- sad to see him lose the TV belt so quickly.

This picked up with Eaton taking his now-signature guardrail bump but I didn't think much of this overall. Lots of opening stalling that wasn't particularly interesting and Ross and Paul E. spent most of the match trying to get themselves over instead of the participants. Jeannie claws at Eaton's eyes and that leads to Austin winning the belt. Not the best-executed finish ever, but a good win for Austin and a sign that the WCW brass was very high on him.

Pretty disappointed in this all around. For Austins first title win, he was bumping hard but seemed over extending himself in some spots and Bobby honestly didn't seem too eager to get a great performance out of him. I feel bad they put the breaks on the Bobby title win so soon especially with the exodus of Flair. Seeing Austin win his first title does show he has arrived in the big two.

Too bad they saved Lady Blossom for the finish, she could have helped out on the headlock sequences. Austin has only been in the company for a month or so and already wins his first championship. I do not want to say this should be hard and fast rule, but I think if you plan on pushing a new star they really should win a title within a year of being in the company. It shows the company has faith in the wrestler, which helps the fans invest the wrestler as a winner. It is interesting that people say they can see Austin's big star potential this early. In this match, outside of his missed ropes straddle (a great heel spot), he did not show me any of his stock heel spots that would separate from the pack. The raw athleticism was there as noted by a really nice leapfrog and a good understanding of heel psychology especially asking for timeout after the first Bobby Eaton punch that comes all the way from Sweet Home Alabama. Eaton seemed content to just use his beautiful punch and headlock to wrestle this match. He did take the wicked Brian Pillman railing bump from the apron when Austin chucked him, which was the spot of the match. Too bad, they were rushed for time because we never get an Austin heat segment instead Eaton just shakes that off hits a swinging neckbreaker and Alabama Jam. I disliked the finish quite a bit. I would not have minded if Lady Blossom was on the apron (dont get me wrong Lady Blossom on my TV screen aint the problem) and raked Eaton's eyes. It was the fact she was just randomly in the ring and Eaton tossed the official all just came off as too constructed. Then for Austin to not even hit the Stun Gun off of it, but just the tights roll-up was wicked lame. Color me unimpressed.

We also know that Austin is all about those buxom blondes with sharp facial features as Lady Blossom is shockingly similar looking Debra. If it came down to it, I would take Lady Blossom, but that is just picking nits as obviously both are very good-looking women.

The action is fine for the most part, the finish is absolutely atrocious. Ex-wrestler 6'1" 200-pound Nick Patrick takes a really weak ref bump--the only excuse for this is a Randy Anderson no-show--and Bobby Eaton ends his 8-week megapush by losing on an eye rake.

This really wasn't much. Austin seems to have regressed from his early days feuding with Adams, and one of his best heat-getting weapons (Jeannie) doesn't come into play until the end. I have no idea why she had to come into the ring to interfere, and Bobby looks like the dumbest schmo in the world shoving Patrick aside and allowing her to do so without being seen. His performance is basic to say the least, and the whole thing reeks of "let's get this over with". Why Bobby's push ended so quickly is a mystery to me, but this loss pretty much locks him into the tag team and stable boxes for good.

I really can't blame JR for treating this match as an afterthought; he's loaded with GAB tour date announcements, plus a plug for his radio show. Remember, these plugs and announcements don't come out of his mouth of his own free will; his bosses instruct him to ignore the matches and concentrate on shilling and plugging. Therefore, to blame him for doing so is ridiculous. Heyman, on the other hand, is most likely responsible for what comes out of his own mouth to a large degree, and the Missy feud has spelled the end for him as a useful commentator. If anyone had told me before this yearbook that I'd think of Heenan as a better match analyst than Heyman, I'd have laughed, but that's the way it's turned out. Now it looks like we're in for weeks and weeks of Jason Hervey jokes, God help us all. How ironic that in mere months, Heyman would be managing Eaton, whom he makes relentless fun of here, as well as Austin.

I wonder how they got around Austin's obvious Texas drawl while continuing to bill him from Hollywood. Maybe that's why he got Heyman as a manager, so he wouldn't have to open his mouth and risk making a lie out of his "Hollywood Blond" gimmick.

Austin showed good grasp of heel psychology and I did like the bump off the ropes a lot, even if I think he went so far as to make it cartoony. Bobby throws a great right hand, but he's got so much more than that. Good enough match but it could have been a lot better. Finish is pure Dusty, which is not a good thing.
