Missy Hyatt makes ridiculous Pearl Harbor comments to introduce Jushin Liger, which really shows how behind the times wrestling is. The highlights do a great job of establishing Liger as a talented high-flyer, but they are accompanied by stereotypical Japanese music and Missy's xenophobic wraparounds. WCW is incapable of doing anything right.

Who’s writing Missy’s material? Monsoon? Nice highlights of Liger but you're better off putting the volume on mute for this.

No, guys, you have it all wrong: this was the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, so it's okay to invoke it. Who thought having Liger's intro to U.S. audiences come courtesy of Missy Hyatt was a good idea? We get some cool dives and moves set to Oriental music that I.Y. Yunioshi would find overly stereotypical. Missy still can't decide if she's a face or a heel, or if Liger is.

Oh man, just when WCW felt really on the rise, this segment was a big time mis fire and totally tone death way to introduce Liger before the video shows his great arsenal of moves.

Why does Missy even have a job? Does she do anything well? Does she botch the name of her own show at the end?

As for the segment itself, we all know that Missy doesn't write her own stuff; she's barely capable of even reading it, or so it seems (I've heard that she's actually very intelligent away from the ring), so we have to ask ourselves why Dusty and Herd want to make this guy a stereotypical Japanese heel when he's so much better than that. We've seen ourselves on the Yearbooks just what he can do, and he and Pillman would seem to fit together like a hand in a glove. But I guess they want to make sure there isn't any split in the crowd, so they're making Liger into a lighter, quicker version of Mr. Fuji. All we need is for him to throw salt and scream "BANZAI!" through his mask before every match and we're set. Hopefully Liger can overcome this garbage and show the WCW fanbase what he can do.

 

I'm guessing that this segment doesn't last too much longer, because I don't see it on the matchlist for the '92 Yearbook. I'm hoping that they found something useful for Missy to do in the new year, but this outfit being what it is, I tend to doubt it. She hasn't been the same since she and Eddie Gilbert split up (professionally), and about the only thing that may revive her career is to find a wrestler who needs a valet, stand next to him, and look silently pretty. Then again, there are plenty of women who can do that, so she may just be better off quitting the business altogether.

Even as late as 1989, when the idea was floated around to turn Muta babyface, most on the WCW booking committee at the time were adamant that a Japanese wrestler could NEVER get cheered in the U.S. because of Pearl Harbor. Even the smart people in wrestling are often out to lunch on cultural issues.

With the performances Missy gives I find myself asking i she were a male would she have had a job in any kind of performing business? I suppose you could apply that to a lot of women in wrestling. I wish whoever picked the music for this had been at Pearl Harbor. Good highlights, you think we'll see half of them in WCW?
