Crowdsourcing: The Shield

So, the Shield is a hot act. Getting hotter all the time. Looking like a threat to the entrenched establishment.

How do you think the boys in the back, the locker room lawyers, are going to bring them down? Besides pointing out Ambrose's lack of tan and how scrawny their arms are? Any ideas?

If you were HHH, Orton, Cena, Lesnar—how are you planning to bring them down a peg or three?

Suggest HHH & Undertaker vs The Shield on a B-show that never draws, so they can be proven as non-factors.

To follow up on this, what historical lessons can we take from how DX buried The Spirit Squad that would help us predict what they will do here? I think The Shield is a way hotter act, but perhaps the top guys could use the same formula to bring them down a peg.

Once they add JTG to the group, you know they're in trouble.

Seriously, though. They will get the depush. No new talent in "WWE" history has survived without it. You can look at everyone from Bryan to Barrett to Sheamus to ADR.

New character debuts. Gets over. Is pushed hard. At a certain point they get depushed heavily to see how they'll take it. When pushed again they've immediately become just another guy. In a lot of ways I don't think the Shield should have gotten over. Rollins' in the flack jacket is just a weird visual. There was so much room for them to screw up their six man tag style and it's a miracle that they've been all on the same page and have shown proper cohesion and restraint, especially given the indy bullshit background of two of them. Their whole "justice" purpose is pretty shoddy and they were outright shown to be flunkies for Heyman at one point. Really, there's nothing separating them from the Nexus except for the fact that they've been hugely protected in the ring. It's a lesson of how almost anyone can get over if handled well and almost anything can fall apart if not handled well.

DX beat the Spirit Squad approximately 5347 times between June and November that year. HHH and Taker aren't likely to be working with that frequency, if at all, but that doesn't mean Cena can't beat them on every Raw with a partner or two, or on his own.

Not that I believe that necessarily will happen. But I think it will be bad news when someone in creative decides to split Roman Reigns from the group because he has "star potential" (size) and gives him a hoss push while Ambrose and Rollins take the tag belts and defend against Sin Cara and Adrian Neville, then they'll split up and have good matches for the I.C. title that get far less attention than the Cena-Langston title program. Of course, I could be totally wrong but you seemed to want a worst case scenario.

If I were Machiavellian about it, I would:

* identify who is the Michael Jackson / Diana Ross of the group

* start scripting a higher % of The Shield stuff to make him look good

* get his ear on how the rest are holding him back

* split him off

Then you can:

* slow the push of the other two still in the "group"

* have the Star beat the other two like clockwork to "win" the feud

* then once he's on his own... more easily cut his legs off

That doesn't always work. Rock got over in the NOD. Trip tried to beat him. Rock got split off. He was too over to hold back.

But...

Trip didn't have as much power back then as he does now. In fact, very little... other than someone Vince liked and wasn't entirely adverse to listen to his thoughts.

Now, Trip is the God of Thunder of the WWE to Vince's All Father.

I honestly don't understand WWE, and this absurd pattern of:

- New guy comes in, gets a crazy push

- Wins title

- Loses title

- Jobs for about a dozen shows straight

It has happened so often now that it can't be just considered 'punishment', or wariness because of what happened with Lesnar in 2004. It can only be put down to incompetence and lack of ideas. How else could you account for the Antonio Cesaro booking?

Ideally, The Shield should stay strong and then finally lose at a major event to climax a major feud. Then down the line one member wins the World Title, and slowly cracks start to appear before the group splits and feuds over the strap, with doubts over who the guy in the middle is going to side with.

Realistically they get beaten decisively, move steadily down the card jobbing to Kofi Kingston, The Miz and Kane every other week.

They've gone 7 months without getting the depush or losing momentum, and have had 1 DQ loss in that whole time. With CM Punk gone, they took over a major role on the show over the last 6 weeks. They just won the US and tag titles. They're not going to stay undefeated forever and internet fans always have unrealistic expectations about this stuff, but I think Ambrose is a lock to be a main event guy for a long time and Reigns has a chance. Not sure about Rollins.

The Shield will have no problems. Ambrose and Reigns in particular ooze the kind of potential that hasn't come along in years. Roman will be the next Batista. Ambrose is a slice of wrestling heaven and is the next super villain in line after Punk. Rollin's will be up there somewhere too. Some people just get over and there's no turning back.

Cena already beat all three last week on Raw. Now they went from main event to midcard. The Depush has started.

You're high, Tim. Cena beat Rollins, was about to AA Ambrose when Reigns speared him and then the Shield got dq'd.

Well, some can't be kept happy. They're heels. What was supposed to happen? They all beat Cena, Super Cena? No way.

Damn well I guess my trolling failed.

I think Rollins will be a star once he turns babyface. Reigns will be the Batista of the group.

I think Rollins is the wild card of the three. At the very least he'll slot into Kofi Kingstons role, although I suspect he has more upside. Seths NXT title run was pretty good even if his first year of developmental is a pretty good example of the shitty indy stuff having to be bled out of a guy.

I think jdw's Supremes idea is the best.

But I keep on expecting them to be "elevated" by being made henchmen to someone else (maybe Jericho, Orton, maybe HHH heel turn) and then being thought to be a failure in that "higher" position.

I always thought they were CM Punk/Heyman henchmen and that it was going to come out when they attacked Undertaker.

They were, but only when they were protecting Punk's title. It came out that they were available for hire because "justice isn't always free." Same with Brad Maddox as the bought ref. Maddox was confronting Heyman and had his cameraman secretly record the incident that revealed all of this.

I haven't watched any of that (I picked up on WWE again after half a decade a few weeks after Rock regained the title!), I just imagined it was the obvious conclusion. It's probably better that they aren't linked to Punk at this point.
