[1997-01-25-WCW-NWO Souled Out] Scott Hall & Kevin Nash vs Rick & Scott Steiner

Last few minutes. I don't think this was the general perception at this point, but I remember thinking the Steiners weren't really a great pick for the Outsiders to feud with all year because they seemed like yesterday's news by 1997. Nick Patrick gets bumped and Randy Anderson comes out of the ring to count the fall and give the Steiners the tag titles. Yay, great moment and stuff. That definitely won't be reversed.

I'm not so sure about that old news bit. A lot of the fans that had turned to Nitro (and I was among them) were people with next to no exposure to early 1990's WCW, and the Steiners in WWF (to my childhood memory) were a team that had come in, had a great run on top, then went out well before they'd burned their credit with the fans there. Personally I thought seeing them again had a lot of cool factor to it. At least I know it did to me at the time.

I do think they're not great opponents for the Outsiders more due to styles clash than anything else, but it was still two teams that had that Godzilla vs King Kong feel, as far as WCW went.

I am not the best person to discuss the Steiners so I will stay out of this debate.

The action we saw here was ok and the ending popped the crowd but the viewer at home was assured by Eric that the decision will be overturned. It doesn't feel like they had completly burned out on this bait and switch finish stuff yet, but they were getting close.

On the contrary, to me the Steiners were perfect opponents for the Outsiders. They were the biggest team of the 90's, and they were truly WCW fixtures of the early 90's, like Sting and Lex Luger. Historical figures of the company. Their WWF stint had been an afterthought. As far as styles went, it also works for me since the Outsiders were big and physical enough to have the Steiner sell for them. This was a pretty decent match, carried by the Outsiders. Kinda slow and plodding at times when Nash was in, but Hall once again was the best of the four. Rick was already really sloppy at this point, and Scott couldn't be bothered to sell his previously injured back, but that's the Steiner for you. The finish was obviously not gonna stand, it's an nWo PPV and Randy Anderson isn't a nWo referee. But a good way to have a feel good moment on the PPV without having the Outsider losing their first match against the Steiners (which would end up being an issue when they would never really lose the belts).

I'm with El-P here. If anything, the only thing holding back the Steiners as Outsider opponents was Scott's injury, which left them in an out-of-sight-out-of-mind spot for much of the latter part of '96.

This may well be the first time I've ever seen a Steiners match where Rick works FIP. Rick low-bridges Kevin Nash as Patrick is trying to restrain Scott. Bischoff: "The Steiners are out of control...I understand frustration, but you have to show SOME level of professionalism and decorum." Eric is in an awkward spot of having to put the action and the wrestlers over while maintaining his heel character, but that lecture was pretty funny. And again after the decision: "THESE PEOPLE ARE LIVID!"
