[1997-01-27-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan vs The Giant

Third match between these two just in January. Fun match just for Hogan feeding Giant so much offense that used to be fed to him by 80s WWF heels. Bischoff runs in and attacks Giant in a funny moment and when Giant goes to attack Bischoff, Hall and Nash run in. Lex Luger makes the save (but doesn't seem to be in too much of a hurry, weirdly) and a tag team is born.

Vince starts off in the ring double teaming the Giant. He is able to fend that off and we get our usual where Giant whips Hogan's ass. Vince again interferes and gets tossed. Eric hammering away on those axehandles is hilarious. The outsiders comes in wearing Hogan shirts and go to town on him. Luger stands besides the Giant but its still ambivalent who side he is on.

Yeah, this seems a little much, especially since they don't do anything new. Giant teases a chokeslam of Eric Bischoff--the payoff to which could have been a legendary moment but was just sort of tossed off in the middle of a subsequent Nitro, IIRC. Giant makes his own save from an attack by the Outsiders, and Lex Luger is out in a Nitro shirt to stand by the Giant and confronting the Outsiders. Somewhat refreshing to get Luger back into the main event fold, even if this segment sort of petered out.

Luger hitting the ring at the end was definitely a refreshing - and probably needed - twist on the norm, as the norm had been played past the point of it truly resonating by now. I mean, I'll usually get a kick out of Hogan hamming it up to ridiculous degrees, but you can only really go so far with the B-teamers getting slapped about the ring before Giant ends up inevitably going down under the nWo's weight. Was it '97 or '98 when Luger got red hot for a minute there?
