Interesting list. I need to make a more detailed reply, but some of those snowflake ratings are surprising, as in, for some, I didn't think you thought as highly of said matches as you did. Again, I'll have to go through them later. Thanks for posting them.

Brief thoughts on some matches:

#10 - Midnight Express v Rock & Roll Express (NWA 02/24/90) ****1/2

I watched this on Saturday and while it was great, I thought the face in peril segment went a little too long as they started so hot and built really well but ended with Eaton having to use the hammerlock spot on the mat twice. But good god can those 5 guys (6 if you add Nick Patrick) roll out some awesome spots.

#12 - Eddy Guerrero v John Bradshaw Layfield (WWE 05/16/04) ****1/2

Watched Austin/Rock from WM 17 yesterday. It is better than this match but not by much. Austin and Rock are on another level in terms of being wrestling "stars" and while Eddy's character was awesome, JBL just can't hold to Austin or Rock. So my #2 pick for WWF MOTYD 2000's.

#14 - The Rock v Chris Jericho (WWF 10/21/01) ****1/4

After watching Rock/Austin, I was dying to see this. I have never seen it and need to ASAP.

#18 - Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard v Lex Luger & Barry Windham (NWA 03/27/88) ****1/4

Two 10 minute tag matches should block each other out on the same card. But no when you have Cornette, MX, Fans, Tully/Arn and Windham laying out matches. Fantastic match, which went perfect for the time they allowed.

#20 - Steve Austin v Kurt Angle (WWF 08/19/01) ****1/4

Started watching this yesterday and then Angle started with the german reversal sequences and I got bored. Maybe a bad idea to watch right after Austin/Rock.

#24 - Vader v Sting (WCW 07/12/92) ****

I think this is MUCH better than Fall Brawl 1994 and Starrcade 92.

#25 - Steve Austin v The Rock (WWF 04/01/01) ****

See Eddy/JBL.

#34 - Eddy Guerrero v Rey Misterio Jr (WWE 03/16/04) ***3/4

Beautiful.

#35 - American Dragon v AJ Styles (ROH 11/09/02) ***3/4

Saw this live and it blew my mind. Doesn't stand a chance as ROH greatly improved over the next 3 years but this was the first great match until London/Danielson 12/7/02 decided to work a match based around story rather than moves.

#39 - Eddy Guerrero v Big Show (WWE 04/13/04) ***3/4

#40 - Rey Misterio Jr v Jamie Noble (WWE 04/27/04) ***3/4

The first is Lawler vs. Monster from Memphis, done tremendously. The second is a match that could be ****1/2+ if they gave it 17 minutes instead of 11:14.

#44 - Eddy Guerrero v John Bradshaw Layfield (WWE 07/13/04) ***3/4

Need to watch again in the good quality Smackdown comps.

#59 - Midnight Express v James Boys [Dusty Rhodes & Magnum TA] (NWA 05/03/86) ***1/2

Is this from the TBS studios?

#68 - Ric Flair v Ricky Morton (NWA 04/12/86) ***1/4

I watched this a month ago on vacation. Morton brings a lot of great moves and quickness that he sometimes left at home during tag matches. I wish he worked like this all of the time.

#71 - John Bradshaw Layfield v Rey Misterio Jr (WWE 04/05/05) ***1/4

Started watching this though had some glitching problems that I hope is just a little dust as the rest of the DVD works great.

#84 - Midnight Express v Sam Houston & Nelson Royal (NWA 05/10/86) ***1/4

It is sick how over Sam Houston is. His cartwheel and monkey flip are beautiful moves for any time period. Great match.

Tim

I agree that it did go a little long, which was often a problem in Midnights/RnRs matches.

#12 - Eddy Guerrero v John Bradshaw Layfield (WWE 05/16/04) ****1/2

Watched Austin/Rock from WM 17 yesterday.? It is better than this match but not by much.? Austin and Rock are on another level in terms of being wrestling "stars" and while Eddy's character was awesome, JBL just can't hold to Austin or Rock.? So my #2 pick for WWF MOTYD 2000's.

I've had this argument with Ray in the past, but Vince's involvement in the match just takes it down so much for me. It's an angle that made sense at the time and Vince had to be involved to get the point across of Austin being a changed man, but at the same time, I feel like they could have accomplished just as much by doing it as a post-match angle instead of doing it in the match. Everything up until Vince starts walking down the aisle is incredible, and there are some great nearfalls afterward, but it just feels a little anti-climatic.

#14 - The Rock v Chris Jericho (WWF 10/21/01) ****1/4

After watching Rock/Austin, I was dying to see this.? I have never seen it and need to ASAP.

Great match - easily Jericho's best and Rock is better here than he was against Austin, as he's playing the Jumbo to Jericho's Misawa, and he's not doing a lousy bladejob like he did at Wrestlemania. Ending drags it down a little, as does the height difference at times, as Rock's catapult looks awkward because he's a good 8 inches taller than Jericho and they botch a legwhip for the same reasons. Besides that, this is a beautiful match with Jericho pulling out lots of big moves to show how important this match is to him -- the standing huracanrana is a beautiful highspot and Rock takes it well, and he also uses a senton and has some cool counters to some of Rock's bigger moves. Crowd is played like a violin the whole way, rooting for Rock big at the beginning and siding with Jericho by the end because they know they're seeing something historic (or at least it would have been had they not botched Jericho's big run so horribly). Jericho's facial expressions have never been better.

#18 - Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard v Lex Luger & Barry Windham (NWA 03/27/88) ****1/4

Two 10 minute tag matches should block each other out on the same card.? But no when you have Cornette, MX, Fans, Tully/Arn and Windham laying out matches.? Fantastic match, which went perfect for the time they allowed.

I really like Windham keeping the sleeper on when the match rolled outside, and I like the way the match starts off with all the big moves being pulled out immediately. Great match!

#20 - Steve Austin v Kurt Angle (WWF 08/19/01) ****1/4

Started watching this yesterday and then Angle started with the german reversal sequences and I got bored.? Maybe a bad idea to watch right after Austin/Rock.

Austin totally carried this and was amazing here -- just as good as he was at Wrestlemania I thought, if not better. Angle couldn't have had this match with anyone else.

#24 - Vader v Sting (WCW 07/12/92) ****

I think this is MUCH better than Fall Brawl 1994 and Starrcade 92.

I'm glad you mentioned that. The Bash match plays more like a prelude to future matches for me, and while it's all great offense, Vader seems to be in control just a little too much. Sting still gets in all his big moves, and they built to the finish properly, but I like Starrcade more for a competitive feel. Fall Brawl suffers the same problem in reverse with Sting practically squashing Vader before losing, but the heat for his big moves is molten. I might have ranked Fall Brawl ahead of Starrcade even had they worked a straight match without the stupid WCW overbooking. Watching Friday night, I really felt Fall Brawl was as close to perfect as I've seen two guys work in the US until WCW did too much with the last 7-8 minutes. Starrcade I might have liked even more had they built more to Sting's pinfall at the end, as it came out of nowhere.

#34 - Eddy Guerrero v Rey Misterio Jr (WWE 03/16/04) ***3/4

Beautiful.

Yes. I liked this even more the second time around.

#35 - American Dragon v AJ Styles (ROH 11/09/02) ***3/4

Saw this live and it blew my mind.? Doesn't stand a chance as ROH greatly improved over the next 3 years but this was the first great match until London/Danielson 12/7/02 decided to work a match based around story rather than moves.

I'm pretty much past most of the 2002 stuff and I'm about halfway through the 2003 at this point, so things should start picking up pretty quickly. Sadly, I don't have either London/Danielson match though.

#39 - Eddy Guerrero v Big Show (WWE 04/13/04) ***3/4

#40 - Rey Misterio Jr v Jamie Noble (WWE 04/27/04) ***3/4

The first is Lawler vs. Monster from Memphis, done tremendously.? The second is a match that could be ****1/2+ if they gave it 17 minutes instead of 11:14.

Agreed. I've never seen a match that made me miss WCW as much as Rey/Noble, because that feud probably would have been booked and lasted for six months or more at some point in 2001-2002. Of course, Rey is better now than he was then, so maybe it's for the better.

#44 - Eddy Guerrero v John Bradshaw Layfield (WWE 07/13/04) ***3/4

Need to watch again in the good quality Smackdown comps.

Bradshaw is a much better opponent for Eddy than Angle because the selling is leaps and bounds better. They're not afraid to take their time to sell the impact of big moves, realizing that a slow pace isn't a bad pace. Smokes the Benoit/Angle cage match from 06/01.

#59 - Midnight Express v James Boys [Dusty Rhodes & Magnum TA] (NWA 05/03/86) ***1/2

Is this from the TBS studios?

Yes, debut of the James boys. I would have liked this even more had they done more after the hot tag, but it was a nice match and was mostly Magnum in the ring.

#68 - Ric Flair v Ricky Morton (NWA 04/12/86) ***1/4

I watched this a month ago on vacation.? Morton brings a lot of great moves and quickness that he sometimes left at home during tag matches.? I wish he worked like this all of the time.

Morton looked awesome here. I know they had a 15+ minute match on NWA Pro around this time, so I'm hoping Ginnetty has the Pro eps from '86 as well. One thing about Flair's working style is that he's a mark for the pop, and he'll do anything to get heat. Morton had so much heat without Flair having to make himself look like a clown to get the match over that Flair was able to relax. That's one thing about Flair that I find interesting - we've discussed how sometimes he does too much to sacrifice his credibility when he's working with a guy that he thinks he has to "make", but I've seen him do some of his best work against guys that are already incredibly over like Morton and Hogan. So I've decided that Flair's problem is that he's not always the best judge of talent, because I think he considers guys like Hart and Luger on the same level because he thought they were about equally over. This coincides with something he said on WOL in 1999, which was that he enjoyed his matches with Morton more than anyone he wrestled in the next 2-3 years before Steamboat because he had to do less to get the match over. Just a weird way he thought about things, I guess, but it makes more sense now.

#71 - John Bradshaw Layfield v Rey Misterio Jr (WWE 04/05/05) ***1/4

Started watching this though had some glitching problems that I hope is just a little dust as the rest of the DVD works great.

JBL is a better worker than Kevin Nash or Scott Norton ever were, considering that he goes out of his way to put Rey's big offense over while still wrestling as a big man against a little man. The finish is GREAT considering that you'd expect Rey to do a clean job against the guy who just lost the title.

#84 - Midnight Express v Sam Houston & Nelson Royal (NWA 05/10/86) ***1/4

It is sick how over Sam Houston is.? His cartwheel and monkey flip are beautiful moves for any time period.? Great match.

Check out the Houston/Royal v George South/Gene Ligon match from Worldwide right around the same time on the NWA discs. Awesome little squash. South was actually a hell of a worker. Brief, but doesn't let up.

Just watched Flair/Morton (NWA Pro 05/17/86) and recommend that all of you who have the discs do the same. 15+ minutes are shown before the show goes off the air. I don't think I'd rank it here, since I don't know what type of finish they were building to, but if the last half of this match is as good as the first half (assuming the match went 30 minutes), then this is a classic with a dirtier, grittier feel than any of the Flair/Steamboat matches because they brought the hate. I know what was shown was better than any 15 minutes of Flair/Funk I've seen. Flair is not even really trying to defend his title here, but rather just torture Morton for embarrassing him on television by pinning him. Morton outwrestles Flair, Flair outbrawls Morton. Nice stuff. This is pretty basic work that gets its strength from timing, facial expressions and heat, but it doesn't get much better in any of those three categories. Worth a look.

Excellent thread. Should be quite resourceful for those looking to catch-up on certain promotions (NWA/WCW in my case).

BTW, Loss, make sure goodhelmet sends you that Yoshida comp he's getting -- it has three of my favorite matches ever on there (vs. Akino, Yagi, Fukawa) and I'm sure these will do quite well on your list. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on them at some point, too.

It's a priority. I will be getting this comp as well, and I'm watching it first thing when I do.

Watched Morton v Flair from Pro last night. Great find Loss. I skimmed through those discs at the beach when I had time and somehow missed it.

Absolute GOLD.

Flair's heel work on Morton's face was top notch. I have no idea how to rate this but I am easily nominating this on the DVDVR 80's project for the Crockett section.

I've only seen three Yoshida matches and its funny how you're three favourites are the only three i've seen. Seriously though, from what little i've seen Yoshida is a fantastic wrestler.

#31 - The Rock v Chris Jericho (WWF 12/09/01) ****

How do you like this Loss compared to their Rumble match? I prefered that to this. Although I liked the work they were doing, the lackluster crowd made me not get into the match as much as I would've liked.

#14 - The Rock v Chris Jericho (WWF 10/21/01) ****1/4

After watching Rock/Austin, I was dying to see this. I have never seen it and need to ASAP.

Although I prefer Rock vs. Austin, the gap between the matches isn't that much. If you like watching matches on the PC then I'll upload it for you.

I agree 100%. I do like in the match how Rock treated Jericho as being beneath him. In his control segment, he took his time with Jericho and was doing half hearted pin attempts. You'd never see a face Rock do half hearted pin attempts on Austin or Taker during this or any period. There are also some great revenge spots in the match as well. I'd happily call it a top ten WWF/E match.

Maybe, but I do think that Vince helping Austin win the WWF Title made more of a statement than any in ring segment could've done after the match. Of course I'd need an example, but Austin needing help with Vince of all people coming to his aide spoke massive volumes.

Everything up until Vince starts walking down the aisle is incredible, and there are some great nearfalls afterward, but it just feels a little anti-climatic

Although I don't think it was anti-climatic, I can easily see why one would think it was. The finish didn't exactly feel like the climax, but the finish was brilliant to me. Had Austin not shown how pissed of he was at Rock's resilence then the finish would've blown. The mood also had a feeling of "WTF is going on?"

Haven't seen the Rumble match since it aired live, so I'm not sure how I'd compare it. I just remember thinking it was the worst of the three matches they had at the time. Vengeance match was totally carried by revenge spots from No Mercy and Jericho's wicked bumping. He also had a vicious streak while on offense that had just surfaced and was fresh after being stale for so long and getting a much-needed overhaul. Heat was strong, although Jericho going over when the crowd expected Austin/Rock totally deflated them, and I didn't like how the moment the bell rang, Austin's music started. This is actually a more fluid and fast paced match than the No Mercy match, and I like what it does to get Jericho over as an asskicker. The finish of Jericho pinning Rock after the Rock Bottom is actually a really nice exclamation point on that.

Same here, actually. Right now, I'd even consider it top five, but that may drop after seeing some more Backlund-era stuff and watching the 80s DVDs from DVDVR.

Just watched Kawada/Fuyuki v Furnas/Kroffat from 6/5/89.

WOW.

I've said before that I don't think any one wrestling match can encompass everything I love about wrestling. This isn't the best match I've ever seen, but this has come closer to accomplishing that goal than any other match I've ever seen.

HEAT - In droves. I love how the native team gets BOOED for double team spots and saves while the Can-Ams get big babyface pops for it. All the moves get big heat. The Kroffat/Kawada brawl early on gets the crowd electric (as well as me).

OFFENSE - World class offense all the way through this. More advanced than any WWE match I've ever seen in terms of that, really. Strong command of the basics, and they build up to the big moves to get a huge pop.

FACES & HEELS - I sort of explained this under HEAT, but the role playing here is so great that I wanted to mention it again.

TRANSITIONS - Late 80s AJPW transitions are better than 2005 WWE highspots. Ponder that. Amazing.

MATCH LAYOUT - Tons of revenge spots and in-match continuity with Kawada/Kroffat and the floor brawling is loaded with payback spots.

One of the most accessible Puroresu matches I've ever seen, and in some ways, I like it better than matches that are higher on the list, but I can't justify saying it's *better* than some of those above it. Elements of Mid South are here (Furnas' spear), elements of NJ juniors matwork are here and WWE style better than WWE style is here in some ways as well. Watch this back to back with the Double Chrisses v Austin/HHH tag sometime. Layout building to Furnas's hot tag is actually very similar to the build to Jericho's hot tag, but they organize it better here. If you say the brawling outside around the guardrail with Furnas saving his partner equals Jericho's WOJ on HHH outside the ring, this comes at the right time in the match without the ref being forced to bend the rules.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. I already find things I disagree with on this list, because this is better than MX/Fans 3/27/88, and I need to do some rearranging there.

Holy crap, I use the word "actually" way too much. I'm going to make a conscious effort to post without using that word at all for 30 days.

I was blown away by this match too. One of the best AJPW tags I've seen.

As far as your list (which are all obviously good matches and above) goes this is what I'd personally have it better than: Jumbo vs Funk, destroys Samurai vs Ohtani, Tsurta vs Kerry Von Erich although that one's pretty close, it completely annihilates Whindam/Rhodes vs Zbysko/Arn, conquers Midnights vs Fantastics if that's the match I'm thinking of and is a little bit better than the Midnights vs Southern Boys. Some of the others I'm not too sure of because I haven't seen them. THere are a few matches in the list that are indeed better.

Watched the match again and I think I found a comfortable place for both it and the 9/2/89 rematch, which is another great match that has some qualities that I like even more than in the 6/5/89 match, but it doesn't come together as beautifully as the first match. I'm about to watch Fans v Kikuchi/Malenko, which I'm sure is going to put this list out of whack yet again.

I do like having it be an ongoing thing though. Interesting to see a match like Benoit/Jericho v Austin/HHH completely fall out of the top 100, as it just did for example, so I know I could say, without hyperbole, "I can name 100 better matches than that match." I know I can still do that later, but I like this being ongoing.
