Crockett Cup 1989

So I got interested in the Crockett Cup during a project I'm doing and thought I'd fantasy book a 4th Crockett Cup.

Background: Crockett Promotions had a stipulation in the sale to Turner that they would hold one final Crockett Cup in April of 1989 to honor the Crockett family and that they would offer spots to all teams in the nation no matter the cost to make it the best ever.

Non-Tournament Special Attraction Match: Hulk Hogan/Ricky Steamboat vs. Ric Flair/Randy Savage: Two out of Three Falls

EDIT: I realize the very last bracket is swapped, but it still works out :)

Bulldogs were still together in early-89, wrestling in Calgary. They also wrestled the RnR's in KC around this time and worked All Japan too. I think they broke up around May/June in Calgary but continued to team in Japan into 1990.

Mania V was April 2, so if the Crockett Cup was the day before the time frame works for Strike Force. ;)

I'm more interested in how long the matches would go, how they'd be laid out and what the finishes would be. I'm also interested in how the show would be hyped. I get "no matter the cost", but give us the logical impetus for WWF talent appearing on a Crockett memorial. Interested in the details.

NWA TV - March 24th - NWA News Report w/ Jim Ross

"Hello, wrestling fans!. Jim Ross here with another NWA News Report. For the past couple of weeks we've been discussing the Crockett Cup '89, the
annual tag team tournament for a million dollar prize coming up on April 21st and 22nd at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Fans, I'll tell you, today's update is a big one. Eight more teams have been announced consisting of four more teams from right here in the NWA.
Those NWA teams include ... The Fabulous Freebirds, Michael P.S. Hayes and no, not Jimmy Jam Garvin, but none other than his so-called "brother from another mother", Terry "Bam Bam" Gordy! Man o' Man what a way to kick off this weeks update. Wow! Samu and Fatu, the Samoan Swat Team ... Shane and Johnny the Dynamic Dudes ... and last, but not least the Stinger and "The Total Package" Lex Luger! Fans, if those teams aren't enough to make you buy your tickets four other teams have called the NWA offices and signed on for this prestigious tournament. From the Mid-Southern region of Memphis Tennesee, Jerry "The King" Lawler will team up with his long time, on again/off again partner Bill "Superstar" Dundee! ... This next team has been away from the NWA for a bit, but they'll be coming back with a vengeance on the 21st, Ricky and Robert, The Rock and Roll Express are coming in to take on this talented field. Two more teams who've spent the recent months over in the orient, but are no strangers to wrestling fans, The Fantastics, Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers have signed on as well as the powerhouse team of Davey Boy Smith and the Dynamite Kid, The British Bulldogs! I'll tell you fans, as a wrestling fan myself I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am for this tournament and can't wait to call
the action. Until next time fans, this is Jim Ross for the NWA News Report."

NWA TV - March 31st - NWA News Report w/ Jim Ross

"Hello, wrestling fans!. Jim Ross with another update on the Crockett Cup '89 live from Greensboro, NC at the Greensboro Coliseum coming up on
Friday, April 21st and Saturday April 22nd. Tickets are going fast, but still available. That really says something folks as there are ten teams
left to be signed and still tickets are flying out of the box office. There are no new teams to announce this week, but I can say that there have
been major meetings all week with a certain major organization to possibly have the final ten teams come from their company to compete in this all
important tag team tournament. I apologize I am unable to give any more details at this time, but I understand a deal is very close to being
completed. Tune in next week for more information on this exciting upcoming event!"

[NON-KAYFABE INFORMATION: The WWF and Turner Sports reached an agreement last week that would allow ten teams, plus Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage to participate in the Crockett Cup '89 event. The major win for the WWF in the deal is that a deal was brokered by long time former WWF booker George Scott and Vince McMahon that they would postpone Clash of the Champions 6, thus keeping it from running head to head with the upcoming WrestleMania V. Also, Vince and the WWF would get 10% of the gate and be able to run commercials promoting the upcoming Saturday Night's Main Event that would be taped the following Tuesday after the Crockett show and shown in late May.]

NWA TV - April 7th - NWA News Report w/ Jim Ross

"Hello, wrestling fans!. Jim Ross with you here bringing you the NWA News Report. The deal is done! It has been signed. Ten teams from the World
Wrestling Federation are signed to compete in this all important, final Crockett Cup extravaganza. Without further ado, here are the ten fantastic
teams from the WWF signed for the event: The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, Jacques and Raymond ... The Barbarian and The Warlord, the Powers of Pain ...Former Horseman, Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, the Brain Busters! ... The Conquistadors ... Luke and Butch, the Bushwackers ... The Rockers, Marty Jannetty and Shawn Michaels, Current WWF World Tag Team Champions, Ax and Smash Demolition! ... Bret "Hitman" Hart and Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart, the Hart Foundation ... The Twin Towers, Big Boss Man and Akeem the African Dream! ... and Strike Force. Now, due to what took place at WrestleMania V when Rick Martel walked out on his partner Tito Santana these two young men are at odds, but the contract was signed just before that event and therefore they are being forced to team with one another and lets hope they get along for that one million dollar prize, because this competition is steep! Now, if that weren't enough, perhaps the biggest tag team match in history has been signed as a non-tournament special
attraction. World Wrestling Federation Champion Hulk Hogan will team with NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat to take on former champions "Nature Boy" Ric Flair and "Macho Man" Randy Savage! April 21st - Day One - First Round:

Jerry Lawler/Bill Dundee v. Bushwhackers

Dundee and Butch to start. Dundee gains a side headlock only for Butch to slip out and bite him in the ass. This sequence happens three times before a frustrated Dundee tags in Lawler who pulls the strap down ready to go. Butch tags in Luke which has Lawler pleased with his successful intimidation. Lawler gets Luke in a side headlock and more of the same with Luke slipping out and biting Lawler. Lawler powders while the Bushwhackers prance around the ring to the delight of the crowd. Lawler back in and gains control with a hidden chain. He and Dundee tag frequently and easily pass the chain back and forth like pros. Crowd heated at the cheating tactics. Finally Luke's complaining had been getting him nowhere so he sticks his hand down Dundee's tights and pulls the chain out himself, causing the referee to argue with Dundee who gets rolled up by Luke for a near fall. Bushwhackers on a roll, thwarting every Dundee/Lawler comeback until a low blow and piledriver by Lawler ends the match at 7:07.

Badd Company v. Conquistadors

Badd Company treat Conquistadors like modern day Mulkey brothers. Squash. 45 seconds.

Sting/Lex Luger v. Varsity Club (Williams/Rotunda)

Varsity Club jumps Sting and Luger at the bell only for the faces to gain control and force Williams and Rotunda to take a powder and rethink their strategy. Luger starts with Williams as they trade of feats of strength like press slamming each other, nobody budging off shoulder blocks, etc. Sting in and Varsity Club manage to cut off the ring. Sting FIP. Kevin Sullivan at ringside gets in a cheap shot at every chance to the dismay of the crowd. Sting fights from underneath, Irish Whip Williams into his own corner and runs in for a simultaneous Stinger Splash and tag to Luger. Luger overwhelming Williams who tags out to Rotunda. Rotunda is met with a torture rack as soon as he enters. Sting cuts off Williams save attempt. Rotunda submits 10:14

Powers of Pain v. Dynamic Dudes

Dynamic Dudes out to a chorus of boos from the males and screams from the females. Powers of Pain run out while the Dudes make their rounds at ringside greeting the fans and grab one of the Dudes' skateboards and nails Shane with it. They then throw Johnny inside the ring. A series of power moves awe the crowd and pop the males especially. Meanwhile, Shane, bleeding from the earlier shot is attempting to enter the ring only to be cut off at each attempt by a quick kick to his lacerated head. A Barbarian middle rope clothesline ends the match at 1:33.

April 21st - Day One - First Round:

Twin Towers v. Fabulous Freebirds (Gordy/Hayes)

Boss Man and Gordy staredown at start of the match. Trade power moves and neither man gaining advantage during the in-match grudge. This leads to them brawling on the outside and while Hayes is up against the ropes about to go out and help, Akeem gives him a knee to the back from behind and then the big 747 splash for the pin and win.

Rougeau Brothers v. Destruction Crew

Finish comes when Bloom is holding Ray as Enos comes off the ropes for a clothesline. Ray ducks and Enos hits Bloom. While Ray ties up Enos in a brawl, Jacques is tagged in and hits his top rope whoopie cushion splash on a downed Bloom for the win.

Samoan Swat Team v. British Bulldogs

Even, back and forth match until Bulldogs get the advantage, Fatu holds Davey Boy for Dangerously to hit him with phone, he ducks and the phone shatters on Fatu's head, but little effect only dazing him. However, it was enough for Bulldogs to hit their finisher and gain the pin.

Round 2

Powers of Pain v. Brain Busters

Brain Busters isolate Barbarian working on his arm in typical Arn/Tully style. During the Powers of Pain comeback, Tully is brawling with Warlord while Barbarian goes for his second rope clothesline on Arn, but uses the injured arm and curls in pain while a dazed Arn pins him.

Hart Foundation v. Sting/Lex Luger

Hart Foundation work over Luger's back for most of the match and during their comeback, Luger attempts to rack Neidhart, but his back gives out and he gets the Hart Attack finisher for the pin. Sting was out in the corner after hitting the post after a missed Stinger Splash.

Rock -n- Roll Express v. Jerry Lawler/Bill Dundee

Lawler gets on the mic before the match telling everyone who may not know that he put the Rock -n- Roll Express together and tonight he is going to tear them apart. After an initial RnR fast paced ariel arsenal, Dundee and Lawler fall into their chain offense gimmick like with the Bushwackers, but this time they get caught for the DQ.

Rockers v. Badd Company

Think their Royal Rumble 1991 match, but better. Rockers advance.
