This was AWESOME! Tenryu and Onita at their charismatic best hitting each other with boards and plunder flying everywhere to the delight of a screaming crowd. Tenryu is wearing this oversized white dress shirt to protect himself from the barbed wire, which is pretty great. This is one of the most out of control things I’ve ever seen with more insanity than I could possibly describe. I don’t like this in my wrestling very often, but Tenryu and Onita are teacher’s pets and they bring so much personality to these things that I end up liking stuff stylistically I would normally hate. I appreciate how both guys are in the trenches instead of letting the no-names do all the work while they just act above it all. This is just a total desperate war in every way. It’s also complete. Just an amazing match.

We miss about five minutes to a clip in the beginning but wow this is something else. Hard to comment too much on this match because I don't really know who anyone is but Tenryu and Onita but this is a totally crazy spectacle. They don't waste any time going for the barbed wire spots here. Toward the end Tenryu actually drops one of the barbed wire covered boards onto the crowd by the ring. Talk about a heel! One guy on Onita's team gets wrapped up in barbed wire by his opponents but turns it around at the end, sacrificing himself by slamming his barbed wire covered body into guys on Tenryu's team. This is like the WAR brawl but even wilder and more dynamic.

Tenryu in the business shirt is amazing. This was a great out of control brawl that felt contained because Tenryu was essentially KOTM and the focal point for the entire match. Everything from the crowd around the ring to the facials and blood made this a gory spectacle that was great to watch. ****

A 15m bout and they only find video space for 2/3rds of it. Ugh. Totally wild and out of control hardcore action. Tenryu was walking around in protective gear looking like a total outsider. He beat up anyone that got in his way and sold the jobbers offence for all it was worth. Whilst fun this contest did give me a headache. 8 people in the ring was too much. With the wide camera shots as well it was information overload.

Horrific, ghastly violence in every frame. Deathmatch wrestling in its purest form. The non-captains are all fairly anonymous but that's okay, since they all bleed and die for our pleasure. I don't know if I can really call this a MOTYC but it was never boring and lasted just as long as it needed to.

Man, I loved the opening to this. Tenryu and Onita take centre stage again and they immediately try to throw each other into the barbed wire. Onita whips him across the ring, but Tenryu pulls up short and stares like "not today, motherfucker." Then one of Onita's little buddies comes flying into shot and dropkicks Tenryu into the wire. It was a really cool little play on the norm. Tenryu was fucking incredible in this and I wonder if he never missed his calling as a deathmatch worker. I don't recognise most of the participants and there's something amazing about Tenryu in his dress shirt and tie (yes, he's wearing a dress shirt and tie, and no, I don't know why) potatoing nameless scuzzy indy scrubs and throwing them through tables. He's the guy nobody knows who shows up at the house party and smashes the coffee table and headers your gran. He just revels in madness and Onita Pro made for fecund soil in which to plant the seeds of bloody chaos. I think my favourite part was when he picked up a barbed wire board and flung it at a group of hecklers (god damn unbelievable), but he also monkey flipped Okamura from the ring onto a different barbed wire board and then pelted his face with chairs, so maybe that was my favourite. Someone from team Onita got wrapped in wire again and I love how Onita proceeded to use him as a barbed wire-coated battering ram rather than, you know, alleviate him of his suffering and remove the barbed wire. Always the pragmatist, is Onita. The five minutes of clipping is annoying because why would you not want another five minutes of this, but we got a solid ten minutes of action and it was wild and crazy and awesome like you'd hope.

Call me crazy but I preferred the WAR match.

Onita & Co. vs Tenryu & Co. - Onita Pro 6/27/99 Barbed Wire Match

This is one of those matches where you are watching this alone and questioning your own sanity who loving something so wantonly violent. Interesting set up here as only two sides have bared wire and the other two sides are open but over the edge lay boards cover in barbed wire. Tenryu is in a white collared button down shirt (white is always the appropriate color for a Deathmatch) and a tie that's just weird. Onita goes to whip Tenryu into the barbed wire, but he stops short and it is a jabroni that dropkicks him into the barbed wire. There is a great double front suplex into barbed wire. Tenryu monkey flips a chump onto some barbed wire. Onita was the star of this match as opposed to the WAR match where Tenryu shined. Onita horsecollaring muthafuckas and slamming them with broken table was awesome. I thought Tenryu was more violent in their WAR match just mowing down jabronis with a insatiable appetite. They trade finishes Onita puts Tenryu into the spike piledriver on the chair and then Tenryu powerbombs his ass. Onita powerbombs the shit out of a jabroni twice to win. Chalk me up as preferring the WAR match for more chaos and energy. Tenryu & Onita were just pure rampant violence in that match. This was slower, gorier violence didn't appeal to me quite as much. ***3/4

  • GSR changed the title to [1999-06-27-Onita Pro] Atsushi Onita & Shigeo Okumura & Sambo Asako & Mitsunobo Kikuzawa vs Genichiro Tenryu & Shoji Nakamaki & Ichiro Yaguchi & Hiroshi Ono (No Rope Barbed Wire Double Hell Death Street Fight)

This match is absolute bonkers. As I said last time around, there's few things I like more in wrestling than big Onita Pro tornado tag no rope barbed wire main events as they are absolute chaos. Onita is pro-wrestlings true punk rock icon with his distressed t-shirt and jeans, leather jacket, scar tissue, bandages and water flinging all over a hot wild crowd that rushes to touch their cult hero. Opposite, we have Tenryu who looks like a guy who just walked out of low budget law firm and is on his way to grab a beer with his friends at Chili's the bar after a long day of work with his button up white shirt and yellow and black tie. Both guys just ooze charisma and personality. These two are of course the main focus of this match. Everyone is somewhat replaceable and are just here to take big bumps and bleed. We kick off with a wild brawl early on and the crowd is going absolutely wild as fists are flying everywhere. Tenryu takes a somewhat timid back bump into the barbed wire ropes and he then bypasses a rushing Okumura who just takes a nasty bump out of the ring into the barbed wire. More chaos is ensuing and Onita and Tenryu are just laying on the ring punching each other in the face while Kikuzawa who would then be known as Ebessan in Osaka and Ebetaro later on is taking some gruesome front suplexes on the barbed wire ropes. Onita and Tenryu break away from each other and Onita heads to brawl and bleed all over the crowd in Korakuen Hall with Yaguchi and Tenryu unbuttons his shirt and loosens his tie while he joins Nakamaki in putting a nasty beatdown on Kikuzawa by punching him in the mouth, flinging him into barbed wire and relentlessly throwing ringside chairs at his face. Of course Korakuen tables are uncooperative and we get a somewhat comedic botch between Onita and Nakamaki and some more chair shots and bleeding all over the ring. The comedic table spot botch wasn't going to stop them from smashing the table as Nakamaki still puts in the ring corner and then eats a back bump into and it still doesn't break, so they have to bring it back and use it until it breaks or someone gets broken with it. Tenryu and Nakamaki are finally able to break the table to a big pop with a nasty suplex on Asako through it and they begin to use the remains of it to continue smashing folks. With the tables being uncooperative, they have to improvise and Yaguchi sets up a barbed wire board on to two chairs and then he gets backdropped through it and of course that doesn't cooperate and doesn't break either. Tenryu and Onita fight on the edge of the ring and tease a bump onto barbed wire boards on the outside and Onita takes the bump. Meanwhile Kikuzawa is getting wrapped up in barbed wire by Yaguchi. As this is an Onita Pro show, the crowd is mostly pro Onita and they begin "Onita! Onita!" chants and Tenryu gets fed up with them and he just flings a barbed wire board out of the ring onto the ringside seconds after Onita had kicked out of a powerbomb. The finishing run is on par with the rest of the chaos and Kikuzawa wrapped in barbed wire rushes at Ono before Onita puts him down with his thunder fire bomb. There's a lot of similarities with Onita Pro main events and they may feel repetitive but I love the chaos.
