HHH wants Shane McMahon to be the referee. They play around with potential challengers before realizing HHH wants the match to be against Vince. Vince balks at first until HHH keeps goading him into the fight. This is really way too long for the story they are telling, but they were going overboard trying to get HHH over by this point. The match doesn't have the level of heat you'd think until Austin shows up. I do think watching this stuff that the talking points about HHH not getting over until retiring Foley are a little overstated, as it's not like he's playing to total crickets. But there is quite a bit of daylight between HHH and Austin here. Anyway, Vince wins the WWF title in an unlikely victory that I'm not sure they needed to do. And if they were going to do it, I wish they'd done it when Vince was still a heel.

I thought when Vince won the title, he was a heel? Totally forgot he was a face at the time. As for the match, Vince takes some crazy bumps including the table bump where it didn't break.HHH tries but the crowd just isn't into him as a big time heel till Austin comes out. Even Linda shows some emotion which is rare. It's funny that Austin stuns Chyna on network tv but when they did it in 98, they didn't even show it on USA. How times have changed in a year.

In time honoured fashion the booker gives himself the gold. This may have been the only case where the booker began his in-ring career in his 50's. The stock of all the WWF titles were going downhill fast with all these title changes. Vince is nowhere near as good a face as he is a heel. They're desperately trying to get HHH over but are going about it in totally the wrong way.

Triple H's promo is kind of lame and the crowd really isn't as hot for most of this as you might expect for a major angle at the time. They do pop big for Shane taking down Trips and Austin coming out gets them going. It's surprising Vince winning the title only happened this one time (other than the ECW reign). Interesting moment that feels like it should be bigger.

Really weird going from May 2000 viewing to this just 9 months before. HHH and Vince fighting, Steph checking on Test, Chyna still with HHH. HHH selects Shane to be the referee. After going through the list of challengers, HHH finally lands on Vince. I do think his delivery isn't as defined here as it would get in 2000. Match finally gets going and HHH lays the boots to Vince. Shane is endearing as the ref encouraging his dad and he feels genuine in doing so. HHH beats him up on the outside and inside he uses a chair. Shane gets beat up for the troubles he has caused and Chyna gets in on the attack. The crowd starts clamoring for Austin and Vince has bladed. LInda is in the ring and Chyna holds her back as HHH beats Vince up right in her face. Glass shatters and Austin whips everyone's ass including giving the stunner to Chyna. He puts Vince on top of HHH and Vince wins the title to a big pop. The moment is cool but I am also not sure it was needed and kind of halts HHH big title run. This segment also took a long time to get to the destination. **

I'm not sure how HHH coming onto Linda is supposed to make him cool. Vince was pretty over as a babyface earlier in the year, but it's going to be awhile before the crowd buys him as such again because there's little heat for this. I don't really get what this is supposed to accomplish that couldn't be done with just a straight schmozz finish, other than we need this to be a SWERVE so let's have Austin help Vince because reasons.

WWF World Champion HHH vs Vince McMahon - WWF Smackdown 9/16/99

HHH is refusing to face Austin because Austin blew his rematch on Monday. He runs down all the potential challengers, but he wants the one with the biggest grapefruits. Jerry Lawler says "Me?!?" and cracks me up. HHH goads Vince into a match calling out Vince's ability to satisfy his middle aged wife is funny. Linda has needs too. Vince says no but eventually HHH's sexual insults have Vince deck HHH, but that lasts only so long. Shane is the special ref as chosen by HHH now Shane is the one helped HHH win the title first place. So I was confused at first if Shane was biased against his dad or if HHH wanted him to suffer by watching him kick shit out of his father. Turns out it is the latter. HHH beats the crap out of Vince. Vince is so great at selling the beating. HHH is vicious. I like Chyna getting in a cheapshot. HHH blasts Vince with a chairshot and draws blood. Shane tackles HHH to a big pop but Chyna tackles him and then Shane eats a chair shot. Out comes Linda & The Stooges. I love Pat & Jerry trying to save Vince. It is very endearing. Chyna forces Linda to watch HHH beat her husband into a bloody pulp. FINALLY Austin's music hit to a MASSIVE POP! Austin hits the Stunner and pulls Vince on top for the 1-2-3! I think Vince & Austin as an uneasy pairing against superheel HHH was the perfect to transition into a new era and cement HHH as the super villain of the WWF. Awesome segment!
