[1999-11-14-WWF-Survivor Series] HHH vs The Rock vs Big Show

So did they knowingly false advertise this main event knowing Austin wouldn't be able to work the entire time? HHH and X-Pac wants to know what the plan for the main event is, but Shane hasn't made up his mind yet. Then we cut to the last few minutes of the match. Shane runs out in a ref's shirt to take over the match. Such a difference between Rock-HHH and Big Show against either one of them. HHH tries a belt shot and Shane takes it from him, so HHH gives him a pedigree. DX come out to attack Rock and Show. Crowd chants for Austin, probably thinking this was just another angle. Vince walks out with a purpose and hits HHH with the belt, which looks messed up, then HHH walks right into a chokeslam. Big Show wins the title in what was probably the first example of a guy winning the title without moving up on the card.

Heatless overbooked clusterfuck of a finish. Not only do they welch on Austin being there, they welch on Vince being the guest referee (except for the last ten seconds of the match). Storyline-wise, it makes no sense for Shane to give Big Show this spot and not Test. And even booking-wise, Test was probably in a better spot on the card.

Austin's been taken out in a hit and run incident, so Big Show is drafted in to take his space. I used to think this match had a feel good ending, but as an adult I see how frustrating the bait and switch tactics of promising a Stone Cold match on a PPV and not delivering. The match itself is your standard Attitude Era stuff. This could of been a good Raw main event instead of an average Big Four main event. Rock and Triple H's star power keep the crowd invested, and they spice up the action with some obligatory brawling around the place, run-ins and ref bumps. The crowd are chanting for Austin when DX come to spoil the party, but he obviously doesn't show up. This is probably the strongest the Big Show had ever looked during his WWF run.

Without knowing every detail of what was going on at the time/what the original plans were, I wonder why they couldn't have just done a stretcher job with Austin early in the match if he couldn't work the full match (plenty of safe ways to accomplish this), and then, if they were determined to get the belt off of HHH, just let The Rock have it? The Big Show had already wrestled a handicapped match earlier in the night, and wasn't over at all. It makes very little sense.
