Lorcan vs Almas was fucking sweet

Does anyone remember that they had a match on I want to say the Japan show, which Lorcan (wtf kind of name tho) won clean with a half nelson superplex and then it was never mentioned on TV again, nothing ever came from it, and Lorcan went back to doing house shows while Almas was on the next Takeovers?

I remember it because after that match the only thing I could think about was how I can't see any way that Oney Lorcan fits on the main roster.

I thought the Japan result was strange at the time considering the respective standings of each guy. I wonder if it was a way to punish Almas for some transgression or something.

I love Lorcan. Probably not destined for greatness or anything, but fun to watch and get behind as a scrappy underdog

Catching up on the NXT shows (I usually binge watch NXT now) and finished watching Roode vs Ohno. It still cracks me up that people are so "OH MY GOD LOOK HOW FAT HERO IS". First of all you are showing your wrestling bubble. It isn't like he put on 25 pounds in about 2 weeks to get ready for his return. when he came back to EVOLVE in 2015 (maybe earlier) after his first run of NXT he looked the same and it wasn't surprising given how all the rumors on why he left. But here is the thing, he wrestles the same style that he did in the first run. It isn't like Ohno was a doing flips he was knocking people out. Plus his cardio is not an issue. He isn't getting blown up in his matches.

Last year in Brooklyn had hype, but that was kinda the end of an era in retrospect (it even felt like that at the time in a way, with Bayley's last NXT match), and in Canada at least there was hype for Toronto. I agree that the last two Takeovers haven't felt special in the lead up, but I really liked San Antonio and I think this weekend will deliver as well

The Drifter might be he most pointless callup ever. At least Tyler Breeze can make someone look like a million bucks putting them over.

I think he's a great heat magnet. The people truly hate him, which is rare in modern wrestling

Someone on Twitter brought up the perfect way to introduce him on RAW this Monday. Have the arena go black. Start playing piano music. Just when people think the Hardy's are showing up that damn guitar hits and here he comes. Imagine the nuclear heat that would get

The Drifter would easily become one of my top favorite WWE acts if that were to happen. The meltdown in the arena along with the fans shitting entirely on the following segment ( in a perfect world Drifter would get 10 minutes promo time) is worth watching an entire 3 hour Raw without complaining.

I agree that the bloom has been off the rose for a while with NXT. To me, its the little things that did me in. NXT has adopted too many main roster quirks and tropes that I just 100% do not like. The shaky camera, the over-hammy and corporate directive entrances, and being too inside baseball in the continued build of the overall brand are just some of the turn-offs. Having Strong, Roode, Nakamura, Ohno, and DIY on the roster is a good thing---but FUCK! The first, second, and third generation churn was fine, but NXT has been shaky ever since with only a handful of people being able to step up while the remainder of the roster looks/remains questionable. NXT use to be must-watch TV, but not anymore.

Agreed. I noticed that too. The first Takeover I watched seemed quite different from the main stuff. Last Takeovers I saw mostly looked like the main stuff. And since I can't stand WWE overproduction, well...

NXT as TV hasn't been must see for almost 2 years. Takeovers haven't been must see for over a year. The Balor era pretty much ruined NXT.

That seems a bit strong. I personally enjoyed the Balor/Joe series, and thought the match at Takeover Dallas was terrific. Nakamura has been a real disappointment -- primarily because of how he's been used and the apparently resulting effort -- but a disappointment nonetheless. The series with Joe never approached what youd hope for, and the Zayn match feels more like a great moment surrounding the debut before a crowd that was dying for a classic as opposed to actually getting one.

The biggest fall has been on the women's side as it was arguably the show's biggest strength for some time. Losing Charlotte, Becky and Sasha at once created a huge void that simply hasn't been filled. Asuka is more than competent, but has also never been established as a firm babyface or heel which prevented her matches with Bayley & Nia Jax from approaching the level we'd seen previously. Jax got moved up far too quickly and they simply haven't brought in anyone who can really push Asuka. I hoped Nikki Cross would get that chance but its not in the cards as of yet, and Ember Moon hasn't made any real impression thus far. Certainly potential to revamp the division with arrivals from Japan & Europe post Mania, but we'll see how strongly any newcomers are featured.

On the other hand, the tag division has been outstanding with DIY & Revival putting together a couple legit MOTYs. I've enjoyed just about everything from them and even AOP on TV as they've kept it fresh with squashes and angles involving all 3 teams heading into this weekend, and really never got stale since American Alpha got called up and the focused shifted in this direction.

Once they had Balor win the title, he didn't even have an angle for almost 5 months. Then he had what felt like a never ending feud with Joe, but in Balor's whole reign that lasted 11 months, he had all of 4 title defenses. 2 were against Joe, 1 was a rematch with KO, and a random TV match with Apollo Crews.

Every week they'd tell you how great he was doing as the face of the brand, how popular he was, but then he would be off TV 3-4 weeks at a time and they'd just show you the same clips over and over while telling you how great he is. That was his whole reign. That's what they've done with Nakamura, except for him they didn't even bother with a storyline, they just put him into the title match immediately and kept up the Balor booking.

What kept NXT a good TV show during the time frame Balor was champion (and we can extend that to his debut, actually) was the women's division and tag division.

Finn Balor is quite honestly one of the worst champions NXT has seen and he fucking tanked that show afterwards. His feuds with KO and Joe produced almost zero GREAT matches. The one were Joe was busted open in the first few moments was the only one that makes for a compelling watch, and that was not even intentional.

I don't know, I want to believe (cue X-Files music) tat he fans just wanted to go along with the oldschool angle of the obvious masked guy, ala Giant Machines and Mr. America. That they cheered for El Vagabundo, because he could not be the Drifter, because he had to leave NXT. Probably not that way, but it makes me feel good to think that way.

I really think Ruby Riot could be absolute money for them with a bit more polish. Historically, WWE have always done well with female wrestlers who've been a bit edgier, a bit "outsider" - think how popular Lita, AJ Lee and Paige have been with female fans. Riot is arguably already a better wrestler than all three of them and hopefully will get better in NXT. Obviously a lot depends on how well she's booked, but I can see her getting more over than the likes of Ember, Liv or Aliyah very quickly

After a very, very long time of mediocre TV, last night's episode of NXT was pretty damn great from top to bottom.

From a great match in Lorcan vs McIntyre (who looks like a fucking megastar), to much needed development videos for Ember Moon, to matches establishing new talent like Ruby Riot and Dylan Miley (who was great btw), it just felt good. Hopefully it keeps the pace.
