NXT talk

I really liked that Burch/Lorcan match and am looking forward to the rematch. I didn't much care for Mcintyre/Dane, but that was all on Dane. He spends way too much time between offensive maneuvers wandering around the ring, staring at the crowd. I find him to be really plodding and uninteresting. Great show overall this week again, though.

Lorcan vs Burch was tons of fun, really good, stiff wrestling.

I also thought Moon vs Riot was solid stuff. Dane vs Drew was pretty good. It was nothing I would write home about, but it was solid and got the job done.

I just felt like this crowd was dead. Lorcan and Burch got a little reaction out of them, but they had to blast each other to get what little they did. The main seemed to have NOTHING behind it in terms of the crowd and that surprised me a little. I don't usually give a shit about the crowd, but it really stood out to me during those two matches and it was sort of distracting to me, oddly.

Funny how crowd burnout is plaguing both NXT and GFW these days. Maybe it's an Orlando thing? Not to sound too old mannish here but long taping sessions were the norm when the territories started going on TV. If crowds could maintain excitement through an all day death march of jobber matches that was a mid 80s Superstars taping, why are these crowds completely dead after a couple of shows?

I think losing all their favorites over the past year plus(Balor, Nak, Zayn, Bayley, Dillenger, Cass and Enzo etc etc) has taken it out of the fan base. There's a lot of talent in NXT, and the tv matches this year have been great, but the acts don't have that connection with the audience like the people mentioned above. Some of that falls on the writing team who have still yet to come up with a decent story line for Alister Black or their #1 contender Drew McIntyre. They really haven't done a good job with Ember Moon's character either.

Speaking of Drew Mac why the hell do we have to sit through Jinder Mahal and Barron Corbin matches while this dude is in NXT? He made Dain look like an average size guy.

You gotta think Drew Mac does NXT up until Mania and then gets his call-up and his push.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if he gets the callup after SummerSlam if he doesn't win the strap. Either he wins the belt or he will be sort of out of place. I am imagining NXT is a quick tuneup for him, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, that's a good point. A lot of beloved stars gone in less than a year. Hopefully the current crew can grow on the fans in the next few months

Crowds have been pretty dead for months now, which sucks considering the product has been very good over that period

NXT was pretty bad for most of 2016 between the time Finn left and the rise of Roode killed the crowd once his music stops. That plus stale acts like Sanity and the ROH guys coming in with no story has made the crowd not care about hardly anything. For the longest time, NXT was just running matches and hardly any stories so the crowd just got into who they wanted to. That's why guys like Tye and to an extent Ascension got over. Also, the atmosphere is not like how it used to be. It has gotten better since Mania and I thought the crowd was fine for Oney/Burch live. Especially the second match.

I'd argue that the music is the reason why Roode can't really get over. It overtakes everything about the character. Once the music theme is more over than the guy, it's over and done with. "Glorious" is an hideous piece of music and a terrible idea. Roode is an Arn Anderson-like worker in the ring (not saying he's even close as a worker though, let's not be crazy), he's a guy who gets over having good-solid TV matches. This music theme makes him Fandango. Nakamura refusing it was a damn smart idea (yeah, fans chants Nak's theme also, but it's because they loved Nak from day one and the music is actually catchy in a non-cheesy way and fits the character).

I really agree with you about this.

I think the show has been really good the past couple of months, but that is all on the in ring stuff and the natural innate talent of the roster. The creative team is doing them no favors. They really don't seem to know what to do with Aleister Black, which seems insane to me. I might be wrong (after all, I like Bray Wyatt) but based on his look, entrance and work, I think that guy has a huge upside and could be big money for WWE, but they really haven't done squat with him since his NXT debut. He's half the reason I tune in, and a lot of weeks they don't even mention him. It makes no sense. I won't even get into the weird stop/start push of a guy like Almas.

I still love NXT but somebody needs to give their creative guys a bit of a kick in the pants.

Some storylines have been done pretty well - Gargano vs Ciampa, Strong's story, and it seems that Itami going gradually more insane with each week might lead into something bigger.

But yeah, Black and McIntyre are over because they look like a million bucks (specially the latter). Maybe an eventual confrontation is the endgame.

I could not disagree more with the above. And I'm saying this having seen my first live NXT show very recently.

I usually agree with you on most issues, El-P. I am especially a big fan of your views on Vince Russo.

However, in this case I agree with Mr. Shrike. (If that even is his real name <_ i think the new theme song has been worked into roode character and made him a lot more interesting. always found rather bland in tna but with this whole persona he amped up comedic ego deluded sense of self importance to degree that it makes fun watch. loved way came across his feud strong.>

Hey were you at the Vancouver NXT show? How was it? Was Aleister Black there? I am still back and forth on whether or not I should go to the Toronto show. I am curious how the Vancouver one was...

Yes, and I wrote up a few thoughts about it on this forum in the Live Wrestling thread, as did Ricky J, with whom I went to the show, although we were not sitting together.

Black was there and wrestled a very good match vs. Velveteen Dream, which got main event time, but it went on third from last.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

I think they don't push Alister because they probably think he's getting called up sooner than later. There are a lot of guys who probably should be called up but none like black.

Black has already wrestled on Main Event so it's probably happening sooner rather than later. They did the same thing with Kalisto when he was called up.

The crowd has a huge connection with Dozer. And with good reason, he's fucking awesome.

Yeah. Heavy Machinery is incredible. I wish their match against AOP got more time, because two hoss teams clashing against each other is usually great.
Dozer got his start in the little Indy we have here in Colorado. I got to see him live once and it was clear he had bigger things ahead for him.
