Terry Funk announces his retirement after ignoring doctors and dizzy spells to go to the ring. Sounds like it's for real this time. :(

I know "Terry Funk retires" has been a longstanding joke in wrestling, but this sounds serious and sad. :(

WWE Hall of Famer Terry Funk was scheduled to be in Tommy Dreamer's corner for last night's House of Hardcore Main Event in Philadelphia but due to feeling dizzy because of serious health issues, Funk had to leave the former ECW Arena and apparently went back home.

Funk was actually told by doctors not to get in the ring but he ignored them and cut a promo, according to PWInsider. Funk told fans at the historic venue that he didn't want to leave the building or the ring because he knew if he left, he wouldn't be back.

Meltzer Update:

Terry Funk alive and well in Texas after an exhausting weekend

Terry Funk is alive, fine, and back home in Texas.

After making a speech on Saturday night at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia where he said he didn't want to leave the ring (seen below) because it may be for the last time, the wrestling world was concerned about him. He noted after getting home that his daughter called up and jokingly asked him if he was dead because of all the stories.

Funk underwent surgery for an inguinal hernia on September 12th, and was supposed to be resting and in bed for a couple of weeks. But he didn't want to miss his bookings for Tommy Dreamer's House of Hardcore shows on September 16th in St. James, NY, and September 17th in Philadelphia, so he got up at 4 a.m. on Friday, flew into LaGuardia Airport and appeared at the NY show.

After the show, he drove to Philadelphia, getting to sleep at about 4 a.m. that night.

He signed autographs all day at the convention in Philadelphia and was exhausted by the time it came to the Philly show that night. He was supposed to be in Dreamer's corner for the main event against Matt Hardy, flanked by Senor Benjamin. Obviously, that would lead to a physical spot, and given he was coming off surgery, that would have been a bad idea.

He asked Dreamer if he could leave early as by that time he was exhausted. So, they did the interview segment early in the show and he caught a flight home.

There were reports he wasn't feeling well, which had to do with the exhaustion and the fact he wasn't physically ready for travel, but he didn't want to miss a booking for Dreamer.

Funk joked that he's got another appointment with his doctor in ten days to see if he could be cleared to get out of the house with the doctors having no idea he flew and traveled all weekend.

Terry Funk may be my all-time favourite wrestler, but are we gonna pretend it's a sad thing ? Seriously. He's 72 years old. Go fishing and live happily and the healthiest you can Terry, you deserve it.

(probably be back in 6 months do something stupid at ringside somewhere anyway)

The retirement is not sad, no, but his health issues are. People are freaking out and acting like Terry's on his way out of more than just wrestling. :(

Look at this thread, for example: http://wrestlingclassics.com/.ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=151092

I am not entirely sure how to say this without jumping down the predictable slippery slopes. I hope Terry Funk does whatever makes him happy and that whatever his choice is leads to many more years spent with his friends and family. Terry Funk is an absolute legend and any wrestling fan worth her/his salt has the absolute utmost respect for him and what he has done in and for wrestling.

Who is "pretending"? He could be 72 or 82 or 102. It's still sad to hear his health is deteriorating. Why don't you go somewhere or do something away from the computer where you don't have to act so hard anytime someone on the forum shows sympathy to their stupid heroes.

What is not sad is him retiring for good, if it is, at 72. What is sad however is that Terry Funk probably had to work and beat himself up way longer than he should because pro-wrestling is a fucked up business with no pension for guys like Terry Funk.

Getting old and health deteriorating, yeah, it's sad. It's also life when you reach a point. And all things considered and with the life he lived thus far, Terry still made it much better than most of his peers actually. So, there.
