[2000-01-22-WCW-Saturday Night] Scott Armstrong vs Chavo Guerrero Jr

Scott Armstrong in rare action. Of all the Armstrong boys, I am least familiar with Scott besides his officiating tenure. Chavo is out with his briefcase. We get the announcement that either Nash or Sid is going to be the champion on Monday Night. Chavo is playing face here but I really don’t know if he was face or heel overall as I can’t keep track of turns in WCW 2000 and he certainly was being heelish last week on WCWSN. IN addition to the world title, now Tenay and Hudson are talking about Oklahoma not being the cruiserweight champion. Way to call the match guys. Chavo dropkicks Scott to the outside and follows after him allowing Scott to rush back in and gain advantage. We learn Scott has had some upset wins lately. Chavo is now strutting around and projecting cockiness. Scott tries to flare up an Armstrong chant but it was not meant to be. Scott charges in and gets hit with the tornado DDT by Chavo allowing him to pick up the win. Nothing much here and Chavo’s character work is confusing the shit out of me. *1/2

The first match between a second generation wrestler and a third generation wrestler of the project. I suspect it'll be a while before that happens again, if it does at all. Scott is probably the worst Armstrong. That doesn't mean he's bad -- just means of the Armstrongs, he's the worst. Okay match, but nothing special at all. I guess a notable Chavo B-show match around this time would probably require a more spectacular opponent and more motivation from him, which came later in the year when his heel cruiserweight push became a bit more focused.

I usually think that the default answer to this is Road Dogg. Road Dogg was certainly the biggest star out of the four, but I think he's also easily the worst worker, and that's coming from somebody who generally likes his work.

I had to watch this because I'm a HUGE Armstrongs mark and I had no idea bleached blonde heel Scott Armstrong was even a thing. This was your pretty standard short Saturday Night match so really nothing memorable but enjoyable for me to see Scott working as a heel. I didn't know he had EVER won a match in WCW so also kind of interesting to hear Scott Hudson said he'd been on "somewhat of a hot streak" at that time.

Personally I'd put Scott ahead of Steve in the Armstrong pecking order but I've not seen a lot of the Southern Boys/Young Pistols stuff so I'm mostly just basing that on Scott's work in Continental/USA Championship & SMW vs. Steve's work in Continental & SMW.

Armstrong has a look of Jeff Jarrett about himself here and plays heel throughout. There was nothing fundamentally wrong with this, I just found myself struggling to get into the match. Chavo turns the tide with a floatover facebuster, and then gets the pin after a tornado DDT. I always think of Scott as a skinny, slight man, so it was strange seeing him quite a bit bigger than Chavo.

Decent little TV match that I watched to check Scott Armstrong out in-ring. And I enjoyed his work here; he's in the perfect position as a job guy as he heels around enough to gain some heat and eats Chavo's stuff well when he has to. WCW C-shows remain some of my favourite wrestling and I'm glad to see that it was the one thing that even Russo couldn't kill.
