[2000-01-29-WCW-Saturday Night] Steven Regal vs Rob Williams

Never seen Williams before and judging by his cagematch, I won't again. Regal still in WCW at this point feels weird. Williams gives Regal and good workman wrestling match here. Regal is able to show his signature moves and power and essentially squash a big guy like Williams. Dave Taylor tells someone outside the business as Regal jaws with Nick Patrick inside. The Regal cutter is used to put Williams away but it doesn't have a name here. **

I now know I can never trust Tony Schiavone again when he says here "I like Regal", considering that shot at him on the final Nitro. There's always stuff in a Regal match worth seeing and this is no exception. I even love watching the way he pins guys. The chicken wing into the hangman is awesome. I know absolutely nothing about Rob Williams.

I don’t recognise Williams. Is he a Power Plant guy or someone from Wildside? Regal has Squire Taylor accompanying him to ringside for this. Great facials from Regal as you would expect from him, and the story of the match is that the veteran is just too much for his young opponent. Regal gets the better of the early mat wrestling exchanges and when Williams has him backed up in the corner and Nick Patrick is in to separate them, the crafty veteran drills him with a left while the referee isn’t looking to gain back control. Nice knee strikes to the head and the Squire starts jawing with the crowd, telling someone that he’ll ‘rip their bloody head off!’ Regal gets the pin after a move I’ve not seen before, but which Scott Hudson describes as a chicken wing into a Hangman’s noose. He should use that one more often as it’s a cool looking finisher.

For whatever it's worth, according to Bruce Prichard, the line was fed to Tony as a way of building heat early for the invasion. I believe it, if just because it always seemed so random of a thing for Tony to say.

I think you could give Regal a 60 second match and he'd make about 45 seconds of it interesting. Like Loss said, he can always be counted on for doing something memorable or worthwhile happen, even in the most heatless, pointless scenarios. Here he had the fantastic facial reactions to, what I can only imagine, was about 10 fans actually booing him, the great left hook over a slouched Nick Patrick and the aforementioned finisher which, I THINK, he used in the beginning of his WWE run. Either way, William Regal is a very good pro wrestler.
