Surprised that there wasn't a thread about this match already. This gets pimped as MOTY, MOTD, an all-time great match, and it definitely lived up to the hype. Trying to get more into lucha, and I am so glad I watched this match - because it was absolutely awesome. This was a total bloodbath - one of the best blood visuals in wrestling ever. Absolutely loved how it started with MS-1 being a total dick, just beating the crap out of Chicana, and then how naturally it transitioned from MS-1 being the cocky heel in control to him being in total trouble when Chicana busted out that epic comeback of his. Loved every second of this. ****3/4

The greatest match in wrestling history takes the #1 spot for 1983. I have probably watched this match 20+ times and love it as much each time. This has my favorite match structure for a 2/3 falls match. MS1 jumps Chicana in the aisle and brutally beats him, Chicana is spraying blood while MS1 struts around the ring. We have old ladies in the audience wiping his forehead with their handkerchiefs. MS1 rolls the beaten and bloody Sangre into the ring, hits a top rope splash and pins him. Totally one sided beating, not a single moment of offense from Chicana. The second fall starts more of the same with MS1 in total control, and then we have a perfect wrestling transition, MS1 throws a big right and Sangre ducks it and hits this huge left hook, and the crowd blows up, he hits one more and then this maniacal tope to get the count out win. Chicana busts MS1 open in the beginning of the third fall and we have this crimson ballet in the third fall, with MS1 missing a couple of big top rope moves and succumbing to a submission to lose his hair.

This match feels like a legitimate contender for the greatest match of all-time. It's the most brutal match of all-time, and it doesn't need barbed wire, light tubes, tables, ladders, a steel cage, fire, thumbtacks, or any other "foreign" or "international" object. It just needs two dudes being badasses. They punch each other in the face, and they dive full bore at one another. The beauty in this brutal match is the selling, especially from Chicana. He gives himself completely to his role, and it's a sell job better than anything you'll see this year. He gets jumped pre-bell, and he sells the beat down the whole match. He is bleeding all over the place and has this dazed look on his face as he fights fights through loss of blood and what I guess would be considered "concussion like symptoms" nowadays. But both guys do a tremendous job selling the exhaustion, blood loss, and magnitude of this match. It feels on par with some of the greatest acting performances in some of my favorite films, which is something that I rarely ever see in pro wrestling. This match was a revelation to me, and I'll hold it in the same regard as I do my other favorite pieces of art.

This match is absolutely incredible. It's a special feel and hard to describe, but lucha shoot fight might be the closest? This is really peak brawling, lots of great punches and tons of blood. The violent and out of control feel is seen in almost every move and moment. This was the first time I've ever watched this match and I'm not sure on 'best match of all time', but it's up there for sure, and the more I think about it the more I like it.

Great wrestling and the best matches feel like special moments when territories, styles, individuals, crowds, and moments come together to create an overall peak. This is certainly one of those matches.

MS-1 trying to fight off the barber and the post-match are great moments too.

MS-1 vs. Sangre Chicana (EMLL 09/23/1983)

Think this is the second time I've watched this well talked about classic but it's been a while since I last saw it. What a fucking war.

MS-I is just the ultimate bastard heel. He attacks Chicana whilst the announcer in the ring is still talking and just sets out kicking the shit out of poor Chicana, who starts to gush blood pretty quickly.

Holy fuck at those punches  Chicana takes such a beating right from the off that a spectator actually wipes the blood off his head. MS-I on the other hand doesn't give a fuck and is just waiting for his next opportunity to attack. Chicana doesn't know where the fuck he is at this point or what's hit him. First fall is quickly over after a frog splash. Trouble is Chicana has to try and survive this onslaught for at least another fall, or two if he wants to win this thing and save his hair.

These punches are fucking brutal and MS-I just dishes them out and keeps stompingon his head.

What a bastard he fully comes across so well as too. Without a care about Chicana. Even the ref tries to hold him back at times but he keeps picking up Chicana and dumping him the ring, before continuing to kick and punch the shit out of him.

Chicana's selling btw is some GOAT level shit btw. Doesn't really need to be said considering the punishment he's taken, but.

Crowd are willing him on but he doesn't know what planet he's on and can't stand up to even try and stop MS-I.

Just realised Chicana's mum is in the audience

Fuck.

Then we get that moment when Chicana finally makes a comeback and it's great. He just starts slapping the shit out of MS-I and one punch knocks him clearout the ring.

Chicana is still trying to fully find his bearings as he's won the second fall as MS-I is now also full of red.

Third fall starts with Chicana throwing some stiff punches right back at MS-I. Both are back in the ring and both are just fucked at this point as they try and gain some sort of control.

Oh have I mentioned;

ALL THE BLOOD HERE

The continuing struggle by both of them is amazing to watch. They're both exhausted from the blood and the sheer amount of punching they've both took. Just trying for a pin attempt takes it out of both of them.

But it's the final fall and someone is losing their hair here.

MS-I seems to find something now though as he starts to mount some serious offense again with more punches and a suplex, but still can't get the win. Both make suicide dives to the outside too here to try and finish each other off. I'm surprised they can see with all that blood on their faces.

Finally Chicana gets the win and it's MS-I and his hair next. Chicana still goes back and gets some more licks in as the barber is out.

What an amazing spectacle. It's violent, veeeeeeery bloody and is something to sit and witness. Epic brawling, punches, sheer desperation by both and a proper sense of holy fuck throughout and both put in incredible performances.

  • GSR changed the title to [1983-09-23-EMLL] MS-1 vs Sangre Chicana

MS-1 bum-rushes Chicana in the entrance way, attacking him viciously, beating him up and down the aisle into a bloody pulp. MS-1 plays up his arrogance, taunting the crowd as he beats on Chicana who has the crowd on his side so much that the fans try and wipe of the blood after he loses the first fall in quick succession after the beating and a splash off the top rope. Don’t think Sangre Chicana got a single piece off offence. The second fall is the same with MS-1 unloading with nasty, stiff punches, making the woods of Chicana grow. Chicana starts mounting some offence, sending the crowd wild with a few punches (crazy that). Chicana’s selling is great here as he keeps flopping around the ring, not getting his balance even after he gets some offence. The second fall lasts even shorter than the first when Chicana hits a tope suicida to the outside, getting the count out win in the process. Both are now bloody as fuck going ham on each other in the third fall. The first fall is a just a thing of beauty. Fantastic gritty brawling with fantastic selling, violent offence and amazing visuals. An amazing match without a doubt and considering I barely heard of MS-1 and not even knowing who Sangre Chicana was, this was highly compelling, gripping and an easy watch. What a blood filled, hateful match. ****3/4

I love the structure of the first two falls. MS-1 takes out Chicana in the first fall, beating him until he bleeds and picking up an easy win after a top rope splash. The beating continues during the second, but Chicana is able to swing the momentum of the match with one lucky punch. That was a glorious transition and it ends up giving the babyface a countout win to finish the second fall. Sadly, I thought the wheels fall off this one during the last fall as they spend the majority on the ground selling their blood loss. Lads, it's great that you're selling your injuries, but too much downtime is going to take me out of the match. MS-1 taps after Chicana gets on his submission. Both guys played their roles well and I thought this was a very good match overall, but I'm not seeing this as a GOAT match or anything.

God, I love a good violent lucha brawl, and this was an amazing one.  This is up there with the best, I just wish there was more footage out there so I could follow the rivalry start to finish.  I know they were in a trios a week after this and that's about it until October 1984.

MS-1 vs. Sangre Chicana (9/23/83) EMLL (Hair vs Hair) 2/3 Falls

This match doesn't need much context to be enjoyed, the brutality speaks for itself, that's why it is the match that we use to introduce lucha because almost every wrestling fan will have fun watching it. Sangre Chicana was a big match wrestler, it means that he isn't by any stretch of the imagination a wrestler of the year candidate in any year but he can have a match of the year contender with the right opponent like Shinobu Kandori in joshi. MS-1 was one of the original members of Los Infernales, the most important heel faction of Mexico for many years. There was someone called MS-2 if you were wondering but he wasn't as successful.

The match began when MS-1 attacked Sangre Chicana from behind, that move paid off big time because around 3 minutes later he won the first fall. During the first fall Sangre Chicana was lacerated, the cut came from  the brutal offense of MS-1 in the early going so he couldn't barely see.  The people in the stands were behind him because of it. The match continues and Sangre Chicana makes the comeback of a lifetime thanks to dives between the ropes and merciless ringside action that unlocks his path to victory, it comes in the form of a count out as a result of a successful suicide dive and MS-1 couldn't make it to the ring so that's how the thrilling second fall ends. After two falls both men are exhausted, from here we can see two different ways to approach the rest of the match, Sangre Chicana tries to maintain the advantage and MS-1 desperately needs to hit his moves if he wants to retain his hair. At the end, after an abdominal stretch Sangre Chicana got the pinfall with a victory roll.
