[2000-03-20-JWP] Azumi Hyuga vs Carlos Amano

Really solid match here. Hyuga continues to be someone I really look forward to seeing more and more of as the decade progresses. She gets her arm worked over here and does a really strong job of selling the damage in the later stages as she performs any type of power moves. Amano was also strong with her strikes and pin point focus and her having control for most of the match until she gets greedy or over aggressive. JWP is a really unheralded promotion but it usually delivers something satisfying for my personal tastes. Weakest moment of the match was the finish as Hyuga hits a knee from the top but the impact and camera angle aren't that impressive. ***1/4

GREAT MATCH! I love JWP! Azumi Hyuga has been consistently good in 2000, but this is her first really strong match that we've seen. I really like how this starts in a way where the layout looks fairly predictable and it goes in an entirely different direction. Amano is successful early on keeping the match vertical and fast-paced, and going airborne, but Hyuga stops her in her tracks by taking her to the mat. Then, Amano completely flips the script and just schools her on the mat in every way possible, doing the first double cross armbreaker I've ever seen (the second arm wasn't extended, but was locked in position -- no idea what that's called). Hyuga did the thing at the end where she did a German from the top but locked herself in the ropes so she wouldn't have to take her own bump. I'm not sure the origin of that spot, but I'm pretty sure chronologically, this is the first time I have seen it. 14 minutes of awesome. ****

Very good match. Really competitive. I especially liked Amano's ARSION flavoured submission work. I do think she was struggling with her identity a bit. Was she interested in being a Maekawa/AKINO style worker or something else? Hyuga always was a classy worker. She worked the classic Joshi style but instead of being completely Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! she mixed things up, added new elements to her game and thought things through a bit more. You can see here that she was thinking through the transitions more carefully than the usual Joshi go-to moves. Nice stuff.

The no-sell DDT sequence near the beginning of this match made me have second thoughts about wanting to watch this, but they more than made up for it. This turned out to be a very good match with some pretty good selling that you don't typically see in Joshi. Amano did an excellent job of selling her back early on, but unfortunately this is forgotten about. Still a good match, with Amano focusing on the arm while Hyuga brought the big bombs.

Fantastic match! I loved the mat work that was being employed and Amano was great in her selling of her back after it being worked on as she fell from being thrown into the ropes. I thought everything was worked snuggly and efficiently overall. I really liked the finish and thought it was a good cap on a great match.
