[2000-04-30-AAA] Oscar Sevilla vs Angel Mortal (Hair vs Hair)

It is becoming a month end tradition having an Oscar hair match. First fall is Angel beatdown culminating in a submission. Classic apuestas build. Angel continues the onslaught putting Oscar into the structure of the building and he is busted open pretty good now. A powerbomb looks to be it and Oscar’s second even throws in the towel but the ref is occupied. The second gets in the ring and fouls Angel and we are all tied up. Way to go AAA in doing interference in a good manner. Third fall starts with Angel on the advantage but we get Oscar’s big comeback. I have liked Tarzan Boy good enough but Oscar is pretty much more successful in almost every facet of wrestling for a similar type persona they are displaying in their respective promotions. Angel is really violent slamming Oscar onto the floor but he misses a senton. A huge tope from Oscar follows that is insanely graceful and dangerous looking with him hitting his head on the floor. After a miss from Angel, Oscar pounces with a great looking submission to pick up the win. I liked Oscar refusing to break for a couple of seconds showing the hate he still conveys. Angel gives a heck of a battle to not get his haircut saying he was cheated. Oscar beats his ass some more! This match is right there along with Bucanero and Tarzan Boy as the biggest match surprises of 2000. ****

Well, Oscar Sevilla is not afraid to take a bump, getting ragdolled twice on the outside right away. Later, he does a tope to the floor where he overshoots and hits the concrete head first and frightens me. Great match! Ok so THIS is now my AAA MOTY. Effective use of the seconds, aggression from Mortal and a willingness to take risks (to put it mildly) from Angel Mortal made this a terrific watch. Great, decisive submission finish to put Sevilla over strong, and the layout was great for presenting Sevilla as a tough guy -- both because of the punishment he took early and because of his temper flare and refusal to back down the longer the match continued. ****

Angel Mortal is one of those older rudo guys who are basically around to get the younger tecnicos over. He does a hell of a job here with Oscar. Oscar bleeds a ton, so much that his outfit turns red. That overshoot tope was awesome for a match like this. The seconds get involved but don't hurt the match which is a plus. Oscar makes his comeback and wins the hair. I loved the end of the second fall with the towel tease. That was well done. Agree with loss in this being my AAA MOTY so far. Even better than the Apaches matches which I liked.

This was a straightforward, old-school apuesta match. Angel Mortal did a great job of roughing Sevilla up throughout the match and looked every bit the classic rudo journeyman. Sevilla was a bit ungainly at times but they did a great job of making him look tough, which isn't always easy to do with a pretty boy tecnico. Not only did he produce a strong comeback after Mortal had bust him open, he took it upon himself to force Mortal back in the ring to have his head shaved when Mortal was fighting with security. That made him look tougher than say, Tarzan Boy. There was some bullshit with the seconds and the ref but on the whole it was a solid match. Mortal getting his head shaved was quite the sight and capping it off with a half-shaven beatdown on Sevilla was a fine way to cap the evening. Good stuff.

I agree with the thoughts that this is the best AAA match of 2000 so far. Sevilla does a great job of taking a beating in this match, and really every match he's been in so far. There's a ton of blood in this one and Oscar does a great job of making a fiery comeback. I loved the end of the second fall with Oscar's second throwing in the towel and then just going in for a low blow since the referee was distracted.

Sevilla hits a really nasty looking tope in this one where he lands headfirst into the floor.

Angel Mortal gets the jump in the beginning and sends Sevilla flying in the barrier, which allows him to go on to win the first fall convincingly. He bloodies Sevilla in the second and does the traditional biting of the cut. I was confused about whether Sevilla's second was throwing in the towel to end the match or if he was doing it to trick Angel and distract him. Sevilla was lucky he didn't break his neck with the tope gone wrong. The submission was a fulfilling ending, and I liked the post-match fighting to make sure there was a haircut. Very good match.
