I must admit that I have trouble with the Spoiler not playing the heel but it works here and I thought the segment with the Midnight Rockers was awesome. That is a creative way to give young talent an real push and get the fans behind them right away.

I am unsure which is true... it is either the beginning of the end for Backlund and that might very well be the case by mid 85 or it is the rising star of Smirnoff. Either way, it will be fun to keep an eye on this.

NWA Lutte Internationale TV

Taped at CHLT-TV Studios, Sherbrooke, QC

Broadcasted June 22nd, 1985

dieu.jpg220px-Nwalogobw.jpg

Another hectic week that was for me so that's why I scheduled this to be a highlight show. This will be in recap form with a written segment added to it and I'll resume the regular format next week. Apologies again.

-Guy Hauray & Édouard Carpentier welcomed the viewers to this special episode of NWA Lutte that is a prelude to the Pre-Bash event in Charlotte this Friday night. Throughout the broadcast, many of the participants on the card will be featured with past highlights.

-The first highlight shown is from the night NWA Canadian International Heavyweight Champion Terry Funk defeated Magnum TA to capture the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship. Then, via pre-taped interview, Terry Funk says that the reason he issued an open challenge is because he fears no one in Lutte Internationale or Mid-Atlantic. He's even willing to extend that invitation to anyone from around the world and he will soundly defeat him. Funk vows to prove that he's the most dangerous man in the NWA in Charlotte.

-The next piece of highlight comes from the Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup Night 3 when Stan Hansen, Bruiser Brody & Andre the Giant teamed up to face the Strong Machines from Japan. This piece of footage is followed by footage of Dino Bravo's return last week in Toronto teaming up with Richard Charland & Mad Dog Lefebvre vs the same Strong Machines. After the footage, Dino Bravo is interviewed by Guy Hauray and explains his reasons for leaving & then returning. Bravo admits that he was selfish and he could only think about money & greed rather than being happy for the success of the territory. Bravo says that he's fully aware he needs to regain the trust of everyone in the territory, fans included, and that's what he's intending to do and this is why he requested to wrestle Stan Hansen in Charlotte. The Street Fight stipulation only fuels his fire. A pre-taped interview from Stan Hansen later sees him say that he's gonna whip Bravo's Italian salami-eating ass all over Charlotte and he's gonna embarrass him in front of an entire nation.

-Next video is about the recent partnership with Smokey Mountain Wrestling with the recent appearances of The Great Gama Singh, Vulkhan & Mulkhan Singh as well as Tom Pritchard & Tim Horner among others. Lutte is excited to announce a joint event in July with Smokey Mountain Wrestling with future details still to come.

-Up next, we take a look at the arrival of Eddy Creatchman's new acquisitions, The Botswana Beast & Lord Humongous. We first see footage of Creatchman dismissing Sheik Ali & Nord the Barbarian before showing the first appearances of the new Creatchman Family members. Because of their good showings recently, notably against current NWA Canadian International TV Champions Rick Martel & Gino Brito, The Creatchman Family has been granted an NWA World Tag Team Championship match against the Rougeau Brothers in Charlotte this Friday night. The Brain says that finally, his dream will come true as his unstoppable wrecking machines will rid Lutte Internationale of the Rougeau Brothers. In the meantime, the Rougeaus say that they welcome & embrace this challenge and vows to retain the titles in the same state they won it in at Starrcade '84.

-Finally, we see footage from last week's main event when Gino Brito took on The Great Samu and after a Creatchman Family attack, the Midnight Rockers came to their aid. After footage of last week’s main event is shown, we see Édouard Carpentier standing between the Midnight Rockers and the NWA Canadian International Tag Team Champions, Gino Brito & Rick Martel)

Édouard Carpentier: I’m currently standing by with the NWA Canadian International Tag Team Champions Gino Brito & Rick Martel as well the young men who came to Gino’s aid last week, The Midnight Rockers. Gino, I’m sure that you’re very grateful for their assistance against the Creatchman Family.

Gino Brito: Definitely, Mr. Carpentier. You know, every tag team is rightfully gunning for our championships and it is part of the territory. But to see that there are young teams out there that are still willing to do things the right way to gain respect in this business, it’s definitely heartwarming. So, if I hadn’t said yet, I’ll say it right now; thanks to both of you.

Marty Jannetty: We just did what was right. We couldn’t let this go on any further. If the roles had been reversed, I’m positive you would’ve done the same.

Shawn Michaels: And you know, you just mentioned respect and that’s what it’s all about. We respect the hell outta you, guys. You’re the cream of the crop. You’ve done pretty much everything in this business. And when a veteran like The Spoiler took the time to show us respect and class, what else could we do in return? We don’t know when and where but eventually, we’re confident that we’ll face each other in the ring at some point, and perhaps even for those championships (pointing at Brito & Martel’s tag titles)

Rick Martel: Well, gentlemen, it’s funny that you say that because that debt of gratitude will come in early. It just so happens that this Friday, June 28 in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the Pre-Bash Tour, we still have open contracts for that night and we’ll be honoured to defend our titles against you two in Charlotte.

Gino Brito: We’ve seen you in action, kids. Your potential is great. Some people around the world might think that you’re not ready but that’s not up to them to decide. Bring everything you’ve got in Charlotte and may the best team win.

(Martel & Brito shake hands with the Midnight Rockers)

Édouard: Well, gentlemen?

Marty Jannetty: We couldn’t be happier right now. But be careful what you wish for. We’re in to shock the world, baby!

Shawn Michaels: That’s right, Marty! I hope Charlotte will be ready to party because we sure will be. On June 28th, we will show the world what the Midnight Rockers are made of! Be ready to be amazed and then, to party all night long!

(The Midnight Rockers leave the interview area but Édouard Carpentier remains there.)

Édouard Carpentier: While this situation is settled, we still have one open contract to fill and it will involve the NWA Canadian International Heavyweight Champion Terry Funk. We still don’t know who will wrestle the Funkster but Bruno Sammartino & the NWA are working hard to find an opponent and we’re also told we will have a challenger on that night. Gino Brito & Rick Martel vs The Midnight Rockers works great as a face vs face match-up... but my instinct is always that such a show of mutual respect can also be a good way to set up a shocking heel turn. You never know...

Also looking forward to seeing who will challenge for the NWA Canadian International Heavyweight Championship. It almost doesn't matter who it is, as Funk is a great match-up for almost anyone.

Well Lutte has done it again! Giving Andre a title! Are you kidding me? Don't you know about his WWF Contract? Don't you know about his Japanese Commitments? WWF Lawyers are working overtime on this debacle.

I will say that Dino doesn't seem to be getting the best of his return thus far to Lutte but that could of course change after dues are paid.

Lots of exciting stuff from North of the border!

NWA Lutte Internationale TV

Taped at CHLT-TV Studios, Sherbrooke, QC

Broadcasted June 29th, 1985

dieu.jpg220px-Nwalogobw.jpg

(After the opening credits, we go straight to the broadcast booth for the start of the show)

Guy Hauray: Good morning everyone and welcome to NWA Lutte Internationale TV. Before we go with this week’s action, we need to address many situations as after last night’s Pre-Bash event in Charlotte, North Carolina, the complexion of NWA Lutte Internationale has drastically changed as every championship defended last night changed hands!

Édouard Carpentier: Lots of surprises last night and we’ll start by the unofficial title changing hands as Billy Robinson’s Sensational Heavyweight Championship changed hands last night after Armand Rougeau defeated Robinson to win the title and Billy Robinson is absolutely livid about this.

Guy Hauray: Definitely not what the Sensationals were hoping for last night to kick off the show in Charlotte and before we go any further, it’s with great pleasure that we welcome both Armand Rougeau and the NWA Enforcer in the territory, the Living Legend Bruno Sammartino.

(Armand Rougeau and Bruno Sammartino walk onto the set. Bruno Sammartino is holding a bag with something inside.)

Édouard Carpentier: First of all, Armand, congratulations on your victory last night.

Armand Rougeau: Merci, monsieur Carpentier.

(Translation : Thank you, Mr. Carpentier. I couldn’t be happier right now because finally, someone shut Billy Robinson’s trap and it was about time for this to happen. I’m just glad it was I who could do it.)

Bruno Sammartino: Allow me, young man, to extend my congratulations to you for your victory last night in Charlotte. I know that this was your only date on the Pre-Bash tour and you’re happy about your performance but I think I’m gonna give you an extra reason to be happy right now.

(Bruno Sammartino retrieves a championship belt from the bag he was carrying. It is a blue & silver belt with the Quebec fleur de lys being prominently displayed.)

Bruno Sammartino: If we are to have titles defended around here, let’s make sure that they’re now official championships sanctioned by a governing body. I spoke on the phone with Mr. Jim Crockett and other NWA executives and after discussions, they gave me the green light to make this official. As of right now, Armand Rougeau is the inaugural Quebec Heavyweight Champion. While this won’t be an official NWA championship, it will still be sanctioned here in Lutte Internationale and be defended on a regular basis. So, Armand, this is yours. You’re now a champion, just like your brothers were. I have no doubt that you’ll make your family proud.

Armand Rougeau: Thank you, Mr. Sammartino. It is truly an honor. Especially fighting & defending this championship for my fellow Quebecers , I will promise you that I’ll make this championship as important as any other championship in this territory. I’m forever grateful.

(Armand Rougeau and Bruno Sammartino shake hands and they leave from an opposite side.)

Guy Hauray: The second title change that took place in Charlotte last night was the NWA Canadian International Tag Team Championship. The Midnight Rockers asked Gino Brito & Rick Martel for one shot and one shot is all that they needed. In another stunning upset, the Midnight Rockers are our brand new NWA Canadian International Tag Team Champions.

Édouard Carpentier: Some might say that it was a fluke but when you think about it, Guy, many teams had failed right up until now to beat Gino Brito & Rick Martel for those titles. And yet, the Midnight Rockers did it in their first opportunity at those belts. I don’t wanna say that Gino & Rick took the the new champions lightly but I’m not convinced the result would be the same in a rematch.

Guy Hauray: That remains to be seen and while we congratulate the new NWA Canadian International Tag Team Champions, it is very hard to do the same to the new NWA World Tag Team Champions as Eddy “The Brain” Creatchman has finally accomplished what he had set out to do since the rebirth of this territory around 1 year ago to the day. He wanted to humiliate the Rougeau Brothers and that’s exactly what happened as The Creatchman Family has captured the NWA World Tag Team Championship, not without controversy.

Édouard Carpentier: Like if the Botswana Beast & Lord Humongous aren’t already hard to stop, it also took for Eddy Creatchman to throw something in Raymond Rougeau’s face – some kind of powder – to blind him long enough to allow his monsters to get the pin and win the titles. Realistically now, Guy, who in the entire National Wrestling Alliance – or in the world – for that matter can stop The Creatchman Family now? You know that The Brain can also count on The Great Samu and Prince Alofa Fatu to ensure his monsters retain their championship. The Creatchman Family shakeup from several weeks ago most definitely paid off for them.

Guy Hauray: And of course, THE shocker of the night in Charlotte: Terry Funk lost the NWA Canadian International Heavyweight Championship. But that’s not the surprising part. The surprising part is to whom he lost it, Eddie. He lost it to none other than ANDRE THE GIANT! And the crowd literally exploded when that happened.

Édouard Carpentier: Absolutely nobody expected this turn of events. Especially that Andre is coming back from a successful tour in Japan for the JWA and their Festival of Champions. We were expecting Andre to return to New York after that tour but upon hearing about Terry Funk’s open challenge in Charlotte, he decided to make a pit stop in North Carolina and he’s now our new NWA Canadian International Heavyweight Champion.

Guy Hauray: It’s safe to say that this is quite an unusual situation for everyone involved but the uniqueness of this title picture is what will make the next few weeks interesting. Nevertheless, we –

(Guy Hauray & Édouard Carpentier are once again interrupted by a familiar sight: a man wearing the Strong Machine mask handing over a letter to the broadcast team. Guy Hauray opens the envelope and reads its content.)

People always said that Godzilla was unstoppable. That there was no way of stopping this creature. For some, he’s a sign of destruction. For others, he’s the man’s most trusted ally against other monsters. The same can apply to you, Giant. Many say that you’re unstoppable. You have conquered everything on your path and you’re now a champion under most unique circumstances. But in 3 weeks, one of us will slay the monster. We will prove that Godzilla can be beaten. That Godzilla isn’t invincible. Where Mothra, Rodan, Anguirus and King Kong failed, we will succeed.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall. In 3 weeks, Gojira will be extinct.

S.M.

Guy Hauray: Quite the ominous message from the Strong Machines. One of them is hellbent on beating Andre the Giant for that title in 3 weeks. But who will it be?

Édouard Carpentier: We don’t know and that’s the scary part. We’ve seen how devious the Machines can be so Andre better be prepared.

Guy Hauray: We will have more news on Andre’s first appearance on our show next week but let’s get to the ring for our first of two contests this week.

Match #1

Dory Funk Jr vs Denis Goulet

This is Dory Funk Jr’s first appearance since his recent tag team partner Dutch Mantell left for the World Wrestling Federation. Nevertheless, this didn’t seem to bother the elder son of Dory Funk Sr as he’s merciless against Denis Goulet. Dory Funk Jr ends it in around 5 minutes, prolonging Goulet’s agony and finishing him off with the trademark Funk Spinning Toe Hold.

Winner: Dory Funk Jr

(After the match, Funk steps outside of the ring and joins Édouard Carpentier at the broadcast booth for a quick interview.)

Édouard Carpentier: Mr. Funk, obviously the first thing coming to mind is what transpired last night in Charlotte as your brother Terry lost the NWA Canadian International Heavyweight Championship to Andre the Giant in an open challenge. Have you spoken to him and what’s his frame of mind?

Dory Funk Jr: To be honest, Terry is a bit agitated, to say the least. He threw in that open challenge expecting everyone but Andre the Giant to show up. But he did and it is what it is. I would’ve reacted a bit differently but I’m me and Terry is Terry. But I also believe that Terry still has Magnum TA in his mind. He probably didn’t expect Magnum to be this relentless and he thought that Magnum would just forget about it and move on. So, in hindsight, perhaps that he shouldn’t have overlooked Magnum TA and expected him to scatter away from the US title picture. However, ain’t no more dangerous animal than a wounded animal and right now, Terry is wounded. And I don’t want to be Magnum TA right now. As for a possible rematch with Andre the Giant, I’m not sure if that’s Terry’s intentions to ask for a rematch but if he does, he’ll be ready. Bank on it.

Édouard Carpentier: And now, as for you, your tag partner Dutch Mantell has recently left for the World Wrestling Federation so the question is what are your plans going forward?

Dory Funk Jr: Nothing too out of the ordinary. Kicking butts and making sure that people never forget the Funk name. I’m gonna take on all comers. No matter where they come from; you bring them to me and I’ll make them tap.

(Dory Funk Jr leaves and Carpentier returns to the broadcast booth)

Édouard Carpentier: It’s interesting to have an inside look in Terry Funk’s mind after losing his championship to Andre the Giant and we can bet that the Funkster will be back soon.

Guy Hauray: Absolutely. And speaking of former champs, we should also have a look at the now former NWA World Tag Team Champions the Rougeau Brothers in our main event as they face off with Richard Charland & Mad Dog Lefebvre and we’ll have explanations about how this came about from the manager of the new champions, Eddy “The Brain” Creatchman when we come back.

****COMMERCIAL BREAK****

Guy Hauray: Welcome back to NWA Lutte Internationale TV. And now, would you please welcome the patriarch of the new NWA World Tag Team Champions the Creatchman Family, “The Brain” himself, Eddy Creatchman!

(The crowd boos as Eddy Creatchman makes his way to the set, with both of the NWA World Tag Team Championship belts on his shoulders)

Guy Hauray: Mr. Creatchman, your family shocked the world in Charlotte last night when they defeated the Rougeau Brothers to win the NWA World Tag Team Championship.

(Translation : Everyone is shocked except for me. Since the beginning, since the return of Lutte Internationale, I told you I’d finally get those snot punked Rougeaus’ head on a silver platter and that’s exactly what my Botswana Beast & my Lord Humongous did last night. I always said that the Creatchman Family was the most powerful family in all of professional wrestling. Now (pointing at the NWA World Tag Team titles), you can’t deny this anymore!)

Guy Hauray: Not only did you steal that win last night but you almost blinded Raymond Rougeau in the process! How can you be proud of yourself?

(Translation : You won’t see me shed a tear, Mr. Hauray. Those damn Rougeaus always got everything handed to them, never had to work for anything and you’re gonna question the way my family won those titles? You gotta be kidding me! My family deserves those belts more than anybody here and I’ve got great plans for them. I’ve even received phone calls from Jim Crockett for the Great American Bash Tour and you can rest assured that I’ll send my boys defend their titles. And it won’t be against the Rougeaus, that’s for sure. At least, not yet. They’ll have to earn their opportunity. For now, I’m thinking of other teams: the Vachons, the Andersons, the Harts, Fuji’s clan; anybody from Mid-Atlantic who thinks they can beat my family, we’ll be ready!)

Guy Hauray: But now, are you the one behind that decision to have the Rougeaus fight their new allies, Richard Charland & Mad Dog Lefebvre in our main event next?

(Translation : I merely suggested for those two teams to face off, that’s all. At the end of the day, Frank Valois and Bruno Sammartino make the decisions. And anyway, nobody here buys that the Rougeaus & Frenchy’s Legion are all chummy now. Do you think that Jacques Rougeau forgot that Richard Charland almost broke his neck last year? Don’t you think that Mad Dog Lefebvre wishes that he would’ve done what I did to Raymond Rougeau last night? Mr. Hauray, I thought you were smarter than that. All I want is to make sure that my Creatchman Family has the rightful challengers. If by miracle, the Rougeaus pull it off, good for them and if it’s Charland & Lefebvre, it’s gonna be a pleasure for my boys to wrestle them. But I wouldn’t bet on the Rougeaus.

Guy Hauray: Like you won’t count on Raymond to beat Ric Flair tomorrow night in Kansas for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship?

HAHAHA!

(Translation : It’s gonna take your two eyes to beat Ric Flair on top of his game so imagine with just one eye! HAHAHA!)

Guy Hauray: The Brain will stick around to watch our main event, coming up next as the Rougeau Brothers will try to beat Frenchy’s Legion to earn a possible rematch with the new NWA World Tag Team Champions, The Creatchman Family!

****COMMERCIAL BREAK****

MAIN EVENT

Match #2

The Rougeau Brothers vs Richard “Le Magnifique” Charland & Mad Dog Lefebvre (w/Frenchy Martin)

As mentioned before the break, Eddy Creatchman remains at the broadcast booth to watch the match. The Rougeaus come out and Raymond wears a patch on his right eye. However, Raymond doesn’t even wait for the beginning of the match to rip it off, despite brother Jacques’ plea to keep them. The broadcast team even mentions that Raymond will be wrestling against doctor’s orders against Ric Flair in Osawatomie, KS on Sunday night for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. But at least, Jacques is able to convince Raymond to stay in the corner and he’s starting the match against Charland. Despite the newfound respect between each team, no one is holding back as they want to earn a possible future title opportunity at the Botswana Beast & Lord Humongous. Raymond finally gets in the ring and Mad Dog doesn’t hold back, earning his moniker by targeting Raymond’s eye. That’s the part that Frenchy’s Legion is working on all match long until Raymond finally makes the tag to brother Jacques who cleans house. The Rougeaus are able to hit La Bombe Rougeau on Richard Charland but Mad Dog makes the save at 2. The action transports itself outside and both teams brawl as referee Adrien Desbois tries to regain control. After taking care of Mad Dog Lefebvre, Raymond Rougeau spots Eddy Creatchman at the table and makes a beehive towards him. Creatchman pleads with Raymond who grabs him by the collar of his vest and Frenchy tries to separate Raymond & Eddy. Frenchy tries to calm down Raymond and Eddy grabs a bag in his pocket and spills its content in his hand. Frenchy and Raymond turn around and Eddy throws the powder in direction of Frenchy but Frenchy ducks and Raymond receives it! Raymond goes down in a heap and Jacques immediately goes checking on his brother as Mad Dog Lefebvre & Richard Charland return to the ring. Adrien Desbois, clueless about what just happened, keeps counting and unfortunately for the Rougeaus, they get counted out! Eddy Creatchman scurries to the back before being chased off by Jacques! The show ends as Mad Dog Lefebvre, Richard Charland & Frenchy Martin check on Raymond along with other Lutte officials.

Winners: Richard “Le Magnifique” Charland & Mad Dog Lefebvre by countout

I like that people are off and searching for new venues. Lutte hits Texas and I think that is cool. TV is the key here. Anywhere you are viewd gives you a chance at drawing an audience.

As for your TV show, a lot going in here. Andre with the belt is the ultimate screw job to the WWF and that is a cool feud. I would not even give them the time of day though on your TV show. I think it would have been best if you said Dutch Mantell was gone or injured instead of saying he went to the WWF. That might help them get a few more viewers and that is not what you want.

I thought the Dory interview was interesting. He came off almost like a baby face. Maybe you could run a FUNK-FUNK feud down the road. Both could pull it off.
