July 6, 1985

WWF Presents: Saturday Night’s Main Event 2

Houston, TX – Sam Houston Coliseum

Macho Man: OHHHH YEAAAHHHH… tonight’s the night… tonight I finally get what every man wants… the crown jewel… yeah! Tonight I put the Intercontinental championship around my waist and the gold crown on my head and I fulfill my destiny as the King of the WWF… OHHH YEAAAHHHH!!

Barry Windham: Tonight is a big night for me and a big night for my career. Bret Hart… we are a lot alike… but we are also very different. I don’t need some snot nosed rat outside the ring doing my work for me… and if he does come down… I have got something special in line for him!

Gino Hernandez: (combing hair) You see this head of hair… it is perfectly shampooed and perfectly conditioned… just like the two of us…

Chris Adams: That’s right Gino… and trust this Machines… tonight we turn the power off on you and when we take our WWF Tag Team Titles back… the whole world will see just how ugly the two of you are!

Ivan Koloff w/ Nikita: Everyone has talked about this being a big night for Hulk Hogan… everyone has talked about the mystery partner. Do you think that Nikita cares about who that is? Do you think I care? Hulk Hogan… you can bring in anyone you want and it won’t matter because like you… they will fall to the Russian Empire. They will fall to the Russian Nightmare. They will bow down at the feet of Nikita Koloff and it will take more than your WWF Championship to stop him from destroying everything you are and could be!

Hulk Hogan: Well you know something… for all my Hulkamanaics out there… this is a big night. This is the first time they see Hulk Hogan up against the true test… a man who seems impervious to pain. A man who looks to be bigger and stronger than any other human being… but what they don’t understand is that Nikita Koloff is stepping into the ring with Hulkamania… the strongest force in the universe. When I put the call out to get a tag team partner… I had a line around the block but when I went up and down the list… I found the perfect partner… this guy is a warrior and a man I would go to war with and WHATCHA GONNA DO WHEN WE DECLARE WAR ON YOUUUUU!

hqdefault.jpg

Vince McMahon: Welcome fans to Houston, Texas. Welcome fans to NBC. Welcome fans to Saturday Night’s Main Event. I am Vince McMahon alongside Jesse the Body Ventura and Jesse we have got four huge matches tonight along with the coronation of the King!

Jesse Ventura: You’ve got that right McMahon and everyone is talking about the match with Hulk Hogan and the Russians!

(We cut to footage of Hillbilly Jim getting destroyed at the 1st SNME and then last week on Wrestling Challenge)

Vince: We saw Hillbilly Jim endure a lot of pain to get to his point and he will not be here this evening to wrestle and rumors surrounding Hulk Hogan’s partner have run ramped all week!

Jesse: Well let me squash the rumor and say it isn’t me. You know something McMahon… just a couple of days ago was the 4th of July. I don’t think there is a bigger patriot than me… but I also don’t think there is anyone who has more disdain for Hulk Hogan than me! Let me go on the record right now and say I am not cheering for him tonight… but I am pulling for the morals of the Russians. They just want their chance to be heard and they chance at an opportunity at the American dream!

Vince: I don’t quite know about that stance Jesse Ventura… their opportunity at the American Dream is one in which they hurt and dismantle everyone in their way and break every rule to get what they want!

Jesse: No one said that the American Dream was free!

Vince: Be that as it may… fans we have got a great opening contest, let’s head to the ring!

Barry Windham vs Bret Hart w/ Jimmy Hart

-We finally get a chance to see it on television and what a contest this is with these two going 12-action packed minutes. This is a very NWA style with the workrate but just enough WWF flavor to make it special. Jimmy Hart is very vocal and animated outside the ring and inside, Bret is truly coming into his own. He does some great work and get some great heat on Barry before the big comeback. When Barry looks to come back in a big way we se Jim Neidhart come out and he’s able to slow things down after grabbing Windham’s foot but that brings out Bobby Fulton and the returning Tommy Rogers who comes into scene and they hammer away at the Anvil! Bret Hart looks out just for a moment and when he does Barry Windham runs but Breat ducks a clothesline and then comes with one of his own but Barry ducks and locks him in a backslide for the 1….2…3!! Windham has won it and he jumps out of the ring and joins the Fantastics as they work the crowd. The Hart Foundation are not happy about this one. Jesse and Vince put it over as they send it back to Mean Gene and Hulk Hogan!!!

Mean Gene: Fans welcome in here… I am joined with WWF Champion Hulk Hogan. Hulkster… tonight you face both of the Russians and I don’t see a partner with you right now…

Hulk Hogan: Well lemme tell you something Mean Gene… tonight is the biggest night of my career brother. Tonight I step into that ring against Ivan and Nikita Koloff. I will go on the record and say for the first time in my life there is a glimpse of fear brother. Nikita Koloff is without a doubt the Russian Nightmare. This guy has got muscles upong muscles and he has got one of the most devious brains and minds in professional wrestling out there in Ivan… but this is Houston, Texas brother. When it comes to Texas, you have got to do everything a little bit bigger and although it is America and I’ve got the home field advantage… I decided I needed a little bit of Texas to help me in this match… and in just a moment everyone is going to see the man that I searched long and hard to find. So Russians WHATCHA GONNA DO WHEN ME AND MY TEXAS PARTNER RUN WILD ON YOUUUU!!!

Mean Gene: Fans there you have it… the cat isn’t out of the bag but when we come back we find out just who is going to join Hulk Hogan against the Russians!

*COMMERCIAL*

-We are back with Jesse and Vince putting over the big Windham vs Bret contest and talk about how the Fantastics and Hart Foundation have had some serious issues and want to resolve those at some point soon! They talk about the Russians who are in the ring and then we see the big time entrance of Hulk Hogan. He works the crowd in a big way as he gets into the ring and whispers something to Howard Finkel…

Fink: Ladies and gentlemen… joining Hulk Hogan in this matchup tonight. He stands 6 foot 2 and weighs in tonight at 254 pounds… from Denton, Texas… THE MODERN DAY WARRIOR… KERRY VON ERICH!!

a40fa0ee6bc2c2a19e65528c99d7e8b4.jpg

TAG TEAM CHALLENGE

Hulk Hogan & Kerry Von Erich vs Nikita & Ivan Koloff

-Absolute craziness! Hulk Hogan and Kerry Von Erich on the same team?!??! They are truly the US Superpowers taking on the Russians and this match has got some fun heat with it as the fans are literally holding their breath for the Hogan and Nikita moment. We get all of the combinations and it is Ivan and Nikita who control the first part of the contest but then we see the tide turn. The moment happens at 16-minute mark and we get Hogan vs Nikita after Kerry makes the big tag to Hogan who comes in and clotheslines Ivan before going face to face with Nikita. They are talking at one another right before Ivan Koloff comes and he chops Hogan’s knee before Nikita goes off on him. The Russians are going 2 on 1 on Hogan and Kerry has got come in and make the save. This is pure chaos as the referee is losing track of what is going on before Hogan and Nikita lock up and go through the ropes. This leaves Ivan and Kerry inside the ring and they hammer away at one another before Ivan goes for a Russian sickle but Kerry ducks and then locks in the claw as Ivan is reeling for his life. Kerry lets go for a couple of rights and then a big discus punch before locking on the claw again and he puts Ivan down for the 3-count! Outside of the ring Hogan and Nikita are fighting all over the place as officials and agents are coming down to try and break this up. Pat Patterson, Gerry Brisco, and Jack Lanza are shown in suits trying to help along with a slew of agents. We see Kerry Von Erich pull Hogan back off while Ivan and Nikita back off. This one has gone wild as Hogan and Kerry get back in the ring and welcome them in before posing. Vince and Jesse say this is the first battle in a war that is far from over!

*COMMERCIAL*

-We are back with Jesse and Vince putting over the footage from the previous contest. They talk about how these guys are sure to meet again. They turn their attention to Randy Savage as they put over his big win against Harley Race and becoming the King and then they send it to ring as Jesse Ventura is there to do the coronation!

CORONATION OF THE MACHO KING RANDY SAVAGE w/ Jesse Ventura

-This is a fun spectacle as we see some jobbers out here as Randy Savage comes out with Elizabeth. Jesse reads a special coronation piece and puts over how Randy Savage will no longer be known as the Macho Man but known as the Macho King! At that point we see some interesting happening as Jimmy Hart, Greg Valentine, the Hart Foundation, Dutch Manetell, The Sheepherders, Gary Hart, and Sika are shown there clapping for Randy Savage as he addresses the crowd…

1990-Macho-King-Randy-Savage.jpg

Macho King: It is with great pleasure that I address the crowd… you my peasants will bow down to the Macho King! It is with this crown and this Intercontinental Championship that I serve notice to the WWF Champion Hulk Hogan… I am coming for you Hulk Hogan because with this title and with this crown… this is all I need! I have hired the services of my royal guard to carry me to and from the ring as I am to regal to step on the same ground as you commoners. It is with that I tell the world that the reign of the Macho King is upon you… bow down and show your respect or pay the price DIG IT!

-Just like that we see the “Royal Guard” which is made up of some guys in purple and yellow body suits and masks as they lock up under the sedan and walk out Randy Macho King Savage out of the ring and Elizabeth is shown walking behind him… the Macho King is here!!!

*COMMERCIAL*

-We return to SNME with Jesse putting over the Macho King and saying that Hulk Hogan better take notice! Vince wonders why Elizabeth wasn’t on the sedan with Savage and Jesse says she must be viewed as a commoner and not royalty like the Macho King! McMahon says that is absurd and questions Savage’s motives as we cut to the ring for our next big contest!

Jake The Snake Roberts vs Sika w/ Gary Hart

-A pretty simple contest that showcases the babyface turn of Jake Roberts to go with the Monsters Inc. stable of Gary Hart. This is a good babyface showing for Jake who has some good selling and is really the key to his turn. Sika looks super strong and really beats him down before Jake is able to make a big comeback. Gary Hart does make his presence known outside the ring but when Jake goes to confront him Sika comes out and we get a couple of big shots from Jake before he grabs him for a DDT outside the ring! Jesse puts over how that could actually hurt him with it being outside the ring. Jake is able to get in as Gary Hart tries to get his man in but fails to do so by the 10-count and Jake Roberts is the winner via Count Out. Gary Hart then signals to the back and here comes Kamala and Friday! They come down to the ring and they are looking to corner Jake but he goes and grabs his bag before pulling out Damien! Kamala is frightened as Friday and Gary Hart hold him back as Sika looks to be busted open from that DDT! When we come back we will hear from Hulk Hogan!!

hqdefault.jpg

Mean Gene: Welcome back in here WWF Champion Hulk Hogan and with you, Kerry Von Erich, welcome to the WWF! Everyone wants to know how the Hulkster was able to convince you to be here tonight…

Kerry Von Erich: Well Gene, it was simple. I had been tuning in to television and seeing what these Russians were all about. As you know I am from Texas, born and raised and brother I bleed red, white, and blue. When it comes to those Russians it makes my blood boil and brother I wanted to get in that ring so bad I could taste it.

Mean Gene: Well Hulkster, what a partner… he was able to put down Ivan Koloff with that big claw but the war between you and Nikita is far from over…

Hulk Hogan: Well you got that right dude. You see my brother in arms, Kerry Von Erich went out there tonight and he dropped the first of what will be hundreds of bombs dropped on those nasty Russians all over the WWF brother. Nikita Koloff… I saw it in your eyes tonight dude… I saw what you had in there and it was nothing but black. It was just more evidence that you are a low down dirty dude and it is going to take someone like me to get you out of here. So consider this a challenge… at the next Saturday Night’s Main Event… you walk down that aisle Nikita Koloff and face me one on one!

Mean Gene: Fans can you believe it… a challenge for the next Saturday Night’s Main Event on August 17th! Now Hulk Hogan… one more thing… we heard from Randy Savage earlier… the new King of the Ring… he said you were on his list… what do you think about that?

Hulk Hogan: Well let me tell you something Mean Gene… when it comes to the self-proclaimed Macho King… I don’t know what is going on in this guy’s head brother. He and I have been up and down the road together… we have fought all kinds of foes, hand in hand but tonight brother, you put a stake right through that friendship when you called me out! Let me say this right now Mean Gene… when it comes to the Macho King I have got one thorn in my side right now named Nikita Koloff and when I get done with him… Randy Savage… I am coming for you!!!

Mean Gene: Fans there you have it… it is time for the Tag Team Championship match… let’s go to the ring!

WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

HAIR VS MASKS

2/3 FALLS

The Machines © vs Gino Hernandez & Chris Adams

-Big time match to finish off a big time card. It is 2 out of 3 falls and we hear that Jack Tunney has proclaimed that the third fall but end in a pinfall or submission and there must be a winner. We even get a Brutus Beefcake appearance as he has got the sheers and shaver down ringside. Vince puts over how he is not only the barber but also an enforcer. The first fall goes about 12-minutes and ends with a nasty crescent kick out of nowhere on Super Machine by Chris Adams and they are able to get a three count and jump up 1-0. When we come back from the commercial break, The Machines are still in trouble and for the next 7-minutes we see the Dynamic Duo breaking down Super but he is able to build back up in a big way and he tags in Strong who comes in like a house of fire. He is tossing these guys around like rag dolls and they are bumping in a big way. We see Super get back up as he and Strong grab them for a double atomic drop into one another and they crack heads. Adams falls backwards into Strong and he grabs him in a cobra clutch and a slam! OH MY! 1…2…..3!! THE MACHINES HAVE EVENED IT UP! The third and final fall when we come back!

*COMMERCIAL*

-We return and Jesse and Vince are going nuts as Adams and Hernandez are outside the ring and won’t get back in! The Machines have recovered and they go out to hammer them around and toss them back in. We get 6 more minutes and the Duo is reeling in a bad way. Then out of nowhere… what the hell is this… BOBBY HEENAN walks down the aisle… what is he doing? Bobby Heenan walks down the aisle and he is jaw jacking with the fans. Jesse is going wild putting this over while McMahon has no clue what he’s doing. Hernandez and Adams are doubling on Strong until Super comes with a big clothesline and knocks Hernandez out of the ring to the apron. Strong and Adams tackle each other through the ropes to the floor. Super picks up Gino and is going to suplex him back into the ring but when he lifts him, Heenan comes out of nowhere and grabs his leg and Hernandez falls on Super while Heenan is holding his leg but the referee can’t see it for the 1….2….3!!! GINO AND ADAMS ARE ONCE AGAIN WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS! Heena runs over and grabs all three sets of titles, the Mexican, Japanese, and WWF Titles! Heenan is all over the Duo as they celebrate!

-Heenan then gets on the microphone and announces to the world that the NEW and IMPROVED Heenan Family has arrived and their first show of power is to make the Machines take off those masks RIGHT NOW! Vince and Jesse put this over in a big way while the Machines look at one another and then Heenan exclaims they have to take the masks off and when they do… you see….

7584da31b2baf0afa105156e4b3f1500--wrestl

-These guys have face paint on and they scare the piss out of Heenan! The Duo have no clue what to think as they grabs the titles and run up the aisle. The Machines go after them as Jesse and Vince put this over in the biggest way as they talk about the next SNME in August from Boston! Tune in for more news tomorrow on Superstars!

WWF Superstars

Vince McMahon & Jesse the Body Ventura

Matches from St. Louis, MO – Kiel Auditorium

The Sheepherders w/ Dutch defeated Tom Zenk & Phil Lafon

Dutch: The think you people need to understand about Luke and Butch is that the rules don’t apply to them. When I work with these guys, we do what we want, when we want. As a trio, the three of us can be the most dangerous group of individuals in the world. As a tag team, I plan on letting Luke and Butch control their fate by picking apart each and every opponent in their way.

*COMMERCIAL*

Billy Jack Haynes defeated Johnny Rivera

-Another great showcase for Billy Jack Haynes who handles Rivera here with no issue. Jesse Ventura puts over how Gary Hart has issued a challenge to Billy Jack and he will be out next week to pick up his latest addition to Monster’s Inc. Billy Jack finishes Rivera off with the full-nelson and looks great. Will he answer the call from Gary Hart?

*COMMERCIAL*

EVENT CENTER

-Mean Gene is in the event center putting over Saturday Night’s Main Event. He talks about the big Barry Windham victory and the issue with Jake Roberts and Monsters Inc. He then puts over the Tag Team Championship win by Gino Hernandez and Chris Adams along with their aligning with Bobby Heenan. We get promos from them and then the Machines without their masks!

Bobby Heenan: I told the world I was going to put the Family back together and I have done it! I have done it in the biggest way.

Gino Hernandez: That’s right Bobby… it isn’t everyday that the triple crown tag team champions join with the greatest manager of all time. It is a match made is heaven and heaven is lined with green money and gold belts!

Chris Adams: That’s right… now when it comes to the Machines, those two ugly pukes are going to have to go to the back of the line. No more opportunities for you because these belts are ours an there is not a thing you can do about it!

Bobby Heenan: That’s right… and you two may have shown your true colors with that paint but it takes more than a clown to scare me. Like Chris said, you two are going to the back of the line and these guys have got bookings all over the world because that’s what happens when you hold all the titles. So whomever is next… step up and get ready to be knocked out!

Strong Machine: Well I guess the cat is out of the bag… we took the masks off and now you do get to see our true colors… well more than that… you get to see what we are really all about.

Super Machine: That’s right… you know we went by Super and Strong… which is exactly what we are but now… it is time we go by what we are really here to do and that is destroy everything in our path!

Strong: So from now on you can call me Ax!

Super: And you can call me Smash!

Strong: Together we are Demolition and the first thing in our path is the Heenan Family. You two got pretty darn lucky in taking those tag team titles… but know that this is far from over and we are jumping some spots and getting our shot to get those titles back, no matter what!

-Gene puts over the new team of Ax and Smash, Demolition as he talks about a potential rematch if Bobby Heenan ever accepts the challenge. He then puts over the debut of Kerry Von Erich with Hulk Hogan as they took on the Russians. He talks about how Ivan and Nikita have yet to accept the Hulkster’s challenge for the next Saturday Night’s Main Event to take on Nikita one on one.

*COMMERCIAL*

Ivan Koloff w/ Nikita defeated Bob Bradley

Ivan Koloff: I suppose everyone thinks it is great what happened to me last night at Saturday Night Main Event. I suppose everyone is overjoyed about Kerry Von Erich in the WWF. Well understand this Von Erich, you like Hulk Hogan, stand for everything that is wrong with this country. You will feel the wrath of mother Russian soon enough and my nephew Nikita will be the one to inflict pain like you have never felt before. You picked the wrong people to side with Von Erich and now you are on the Russian hit list and we will quickly erase you! Now when it comes to the one on one challenge… Hulk Hogan you think you can just make demands. We have to talk to the Kremlin and see what the next step is. We don’t just make decisions they are planned out and we will be the ones who make the demands and decide what will happen!

*COMMERCIAL*

MAIN EVENT

Bobby Fulton w/ Tommy Rogers vs Jim Neidhart w/ Bret Hart & Jimmy Hart

-A really fun main event with Niedhart’s power getting shown off in a big way as Fulton is selling like crazy. Fulton finds a way to get his speed going and he turns the tide. We go about 9-minutes before Bret and Jimmy get involved and then Rogers jumps in and we get a double DQ! Vince puts over how he is getting word that Jack Tunney has signed a tag team match for next week with the Fantastics and the Harts right here on Superstars!

Really good Wrestling Challenge, telling the fans what they missed, then hyping up what's on TV tonight. Great use of your TV time.

I liked how the Windham match on Challenge foreshadowed the match on SNME, but how you didn't just copy the ending.

As always, I'm impressed by how you keep building to future events. That's something I want to improve in my own booking.

I love how you've perfected the feel of the old Saturday Night's Main Event! Great stuff here....Kerry Von Erich as Hogan's partner lives up to the hype and is a great way to bring him into the WWF.

Dynamic Duo is a great fit with Heenan ala Blanchard/Anderson in '89, this should be a fun ride.

I like the idea of Demolition spawning from the Machines.....not sure how they kept the paint on under the masks but maybe it was something similar to the paint Piper used at WM 6 to wrestle Bad News Brown.

I wasn't a fan of the "Macho King" gimmick in real life but I'm willing to see how it's executed here before I pass judgement.

Yeah I guess I can now announce that the demolition machines angle has come full circle. If you go back to December of 84 I had Mask Superstar and I had krusher kruschev in action and krusher actually lost a loser leaves the country match. That is the Catalyst to set up the angle for the machines to be under the masks and with the recent issues Bobby Heenan blaming them 4 the Heenan family woes it all works out completely with this pay off. Now in regards to the paint Under The Masks I probably took a little liberty with that idea but I could imagine the visual being absolutely amazing with Heenan and his facials just going nuts after seeing these two jacked up dudes and scary paint.

MAIN EVENT

The Fantastics vs The Hart Foundation w/ Jimmy Hart

-Here we go with the Harts and Fantastics and they pick up where this feud left off with some big time action. We get a lot of tags and no real formula outside of balls to the wall for 15-minutes which ends up being the time limit finish for these two. The crowd is going wild for the final moment when the Anvil is double dropkicked out of the ring but Bret Hart kicks Rogers out of the ring before getting rolled up with Fulton for a very close call right as the bell rings.

Bobby puts them over as a dangerous team that cannot be trusted and Gorilla says Dutch is the one who cannot be trusted. They also put over a special announcement for the Event Center regarding new WWF Programming.

Kerry Von Erich defeated Jose Louis Rivera

-Kerry is just a stud out there tonight. He is still donning some of the “America” style clothing with white tights and red, white, and blue pads and such. He handles Jose Rivera with no problem. The discus punch and claw spells the end and Von Erich is on his winning ways here in the WWF!

Tom Zenk & Phil Lafon vs The Sheepherders w/ Dutch Mantell

-A good showcase for both teams and Zenk and Lafon put together some offense and get going on the Sheepherders but it doesn’t last long. Luke and Butch really blend well together as a team and end up utilizing Dutch Mantell outside the ring to help distract Zenk for a double gordbuster suplex on Lafon for the three-count. The Herders look good tonight and they could definitely be in line for some formidable competition in the future.
