[2000-06-18-CMLL] Atlantis vs Silver Fox (Mask vs Mask)

Along with Cerebro and Vampire this is a classic apuestas match and an example of the throwback lucha style that could still be engaging in the 2000’s. There was little doubt as to whom was going over but little facets like the faceless red mask helpers of Silver Fox along with the crooked referee that didn’t try to be the star of the show like Tirantes helped things along. This escalated in a classic style of rudo onslaught, tecnico comeback, mask ripping, and submissions and pinfalls as the culmination. Atlantis does a nice dive in the third fall and does a nifty pin to put things away when he cant lock on the Atlantida. **** (7.8)

I am going to have to watch this again after reading your review.

My recollection of the match was that I enjoyed how they pulled out a lot of stops for what was a relatively insignificant and predictable mask match. Between the dozen masked seconds Silver Fox brought with him, the mask ripping, the blood, and the rudo referee, they definitely dug deep into the bag of tricks to make something memorable out of what was only a hastily repackaged Guerrero de la Muerte dropping another mask. I liked the gimmicks, but remember thinking it was more of a wacky apuesta match than a very good one. I didn't think there was a whole lot of substance in between and despite their best efforts, there was only so much drama they could muster. Felt more like an average apuesta match to me (which is still better than the average normal match) and thought both Dr. Cerebro matches from earlier in the month were more fun but definitely want to give it a second look now.

I think we are closer on the same page Paul than you think. It certainly is a match where they had to really dig out a ton of stuff pertaining to the seconds and heel ref to garner any sort of reaction. It certainly was a match I mainly appreciate more than love persay in that regard in that they knew this was a ho hum apuesta coming in and tried to build from that. I would have liked to have seen some more matwork in the beginning to set the tone before we get to the mask ripping. Reflecting now, I probably ranked it a tad high as I just get really caught up in especially mask vs mask matches. I don't think it is probably as good a match as the IWRG three way from a couple of days earlier. I will watch again at lunch and revise with an updated rating if it changes.

I thought this was a pretty good apuesta match considering we had no idea who Silver Fox was. Was there any buildup to this? It was very much an Atlantis formula match but as we all know that formula has been successful in mask matches ever since the Villano feud. This had an appropriate level of violence. They didn't go all in with the mask ripping and bloodshed but the brawling was good and they sold well. The dives, submissions and pin attempts were all magnified like they should be in apuesta match and the Guadalajara crowd was passionate, especially that one woman who was screaming at the wrestlers while they brawling in the seats. The finishing stretch was sloppy but it wasn't a huge blight. I loved Silver Fox's posse of masked rudos and the joke about how his second, Asesino Negro, wasn't fooling anyone with his mask. There are other touches I liked as well -- like Atlantis' passion for taking a mask and the kids getting in the ring at the end to celebrate with their idol. It was a singles match, so it's easier to get noticed, but I'd put this on the shortlist for the most memorable CMLL matches of the year.

Thought this arena looked familiar as it was Arena Coliseo Guadlajara. After some sorta lackluster smaller apuesta matches earlier in the year. this was pretty good. Loved all the seconds of Silver Fox attacking Atlantis. Atlantis bleeds early on and we get the trading of the falls. Third fall was kinda weak with the rudo ref but then the big brawl breaks out and I liked the finish. Good match even though the result was never in doubt.

I thought this was a pretty good match.  Any match that has a bloody luchadore getting his mask ripped is an automatic plus for me.  I thought the selling was particularly good in this one as these guys did a good job of getting across the exhaustion and importance of the match.  The finish kind of came out of nowhere and looked a little rough.  ***3/4

  • GSR changed the title to [2000-06-18-CMLL] Atlantis vs Silver Fox (Mask vs Mask)

I've only briefly dipped my tiniest toe into the water when it comes to lucha libre, but mask tearing in a Mask vs. Mask match feels spiritually wrong. It just devalues the guaranteed de-masking at the end, does it not?

This match had heart, as I've come to find Atlantis matches frequently do, but the workrate struggled to hold my attention.

**1/2
