[2000-07-12-IWA-MS-Survive This] Chris Hero vs Suicide Kid

Another good match in the cannon of Hero out of the gate. Kid also worked well here. Hero isn't all the way there but he is perfectly capable of having good enough indie highlight style matches around this time that do involve some sort of story. I appreciated the dive to the outside and it looked like Hero was supposed to take a rana but the weight of Kid took Hero down. Good improv as Kid just stops punching Hero quickly. For 2000 showcase indie wrestling this was good even if the crowd was silent. Ian comes out post match and rags on the crowd in great fashion for not cheering harder during the match. He then gives a bevy of threats that this is the last show here "unless a lot of concessions is ate during intermission". I don't know about berating your actual paying customers but Ian is going to Ian I guess. He does put over Hero well and its clear they see something in Hero already. *** (5.8)

Both guys look like future players here, moreso Kid but that's because of look mostly. It's strange. Even at this early point Hero brings a certain calmness and patience to his work that would clearly develop to even better outcomes. But he already seems super comfortable in these settings and feels right at home in the ring.

They get a little tricked up with an overly fancy standoff to start the match and they sort of did botch the dive to the outside but covered for it so well it really became a plus. And they looked great pulling off some rana reversal spots. This was nice.

Decent match. Hero looked better than he did the previous match and Kid is a good oppenent. It's weird to see a Hero match that is not dominated by strikes. Ian is unintentionally hilarious in his post match promo. He bashes the crowd for not cheering enough. Could you imagine HHH doing that at Full Sail or Gabe doing it at WWN? Then he says this is the final show since under 100 people showed up on a wednesday in some backyard in Indiana. Can't beileve he's been saying the same thing for almost 20 years. How very Bert Prentice of him.

Not only an IWA-MS Light Heavyweight title match but, according to Jim Fannin, an independent wrestling fan’s dream match.  I said in Hero’s bout against Harry Palmer how the wrestling looked loose and it’s very raggedy here too ending with a ‘stand-off’.  They do the same lock up spot from Low Ki/Homicide although it doesn’t have anywhere near the same intensity as it did there.  Hero misses a tumbleweed after a brainbuster but Kid is unable to capitalize.  Bar one person cheering for the Kid the crowd is deathly quiet.  A great rana by Kid followed by headscissors take down.  Double jump split legged moonsault.  Hero backdrops Kid over the top rope and, after he lands on the apron, then whips him into the ring post.  Kid collapses on the apron however uses his legs to launch a charging Hero head first into the top turnbuckle.  Hero tumbles to the outside and quick thinking on Kid’s part to cover for the blown slingshot rana by just raining down punches instead (it looks like Hero loses his footing before taking the move).  Tumbleweed off the middle for a near fall.  A tornado DDT spikes Hero on the top of his head but when he goes for it a second time Hero counters with a sit out spinebuster.  Running ‘Liger bomb’ that Kid barely gets a shoulder up from.  ‘Toyota Roll’ to counter a powerbomb as this has developed into a pretty good match.  Hero with a superplex, but on landing both men hook the leg of the other and we get a double pin.  After they put each other over, with Kid offering Hero another title match whenever he wants one, Ian Rotten waddles out.  Rotten calls the fans “ungrateful fuckers” for not appreciating the wrestling match that they’ve just witnessed and then tells them that due to how small the crowds have been that this will be the last show at this venue.  He can’t believe that they put on “the best shows on the planet” and draw less than 100 people!  Rotten claims that he’s $500 in the hole and that’s without paying the boys.  They’re going to take an intermission and unless they sell an awful lot of concessions and merchandise they won’t be coming back!

After the iffy start this turned into a good match.  I thought Kid looked the better of the two, but Rotten, in between letting the fans have it, speaks highly of Hero and clearly sees something in him going forward.  I still hate his ring gear though!
