AWA All-Star Wrestling on ESPN / TSN , August 9th

Jesse Barr vs. Daniel Lue

Things have been a bit quiet of late from Buck Robley’s army, but the Colonel certainly brought in an impressive new recruit in tough Jesse Barr. Young pup Daniel Lue didn’t stand a chance as Barr pummeled him all over the ring before finally putting him out of his misery with a running bulldog. After the match, Barr let it be known he had his sights set on Al Perez and the Southern title.

The Varsity Club vs. British Steel

Kevin Sullivan had let it be known that he was displeased with Missy Hyatt lately, and it clearly didn’t take long for him to show the cheerleader of the Varsity Club the door, as her place at the side of the Club was taken for this match by a black clad woman with a whip known only as the Fallen Angel. As Rotundo and Steiner did battle with Regal and Smiley, she was all over Sullivan at ringside until Smiley looked like he was about to get Steiner in the Norman Conquest, at which point she leapt on the ring apron and started shrieking at the referee. While the ref was so distracted, Sullivan took advantage by tossing the Golden Spike in to Rotundo, who slugged Smiley in the head with the blunt end of it before putting Steiner on top of Smiley for the win. After losing the World Tag titles, the Varsity Club seem to be back on the rise with Fallen Angel on their side.

Pvt. Mick Foley vs. The Great Kabuki

After Kabuki’s impactful performances as a gun for hire at the Holiday Spectaculars, Sheikh Adnan Al-Kaissie was impressed enough to buy his services full time. Kabuki was accompanied not only by Kaissie and Kendo Nagasaki, but Tojo Yamamoto, who Kaissie refered to as the Sensei and waved his kendo stick as Kabuki took apart the youngest member of the Cobra Corps with his martial arts moves. After he had got Foley staggering in the middle of the ring, finally dispatching him with a thrust kick to the jaw. With the war between the Sinister Syndicate and the Cobra Corps escalating the way it has , who knows where it will go next?

Tony Atlas vs. Wahoo McDaniel

Tony Atlas has been running roughshod since he first appeared in the AWA, but he was facing someone who was neither impressed nor intimidated by his imposing physique and power. Atlas went full bore against Wahoo with huge clotheslines and slams, but Wahoo just kept firing back with blistering chops and shots . After a brutal match, Atlas was finally able to get Wahoo in a crushing bear hug, but McDaniel just refused to give in, so Atlas tossed him to the ground in frustration then hit a running splash to finally put him away.

Nick Bockwinkel & Curt Hennig vs. Lex Luger & Bob Roop

While Roop was clearly going all out against the young Hennig, Luger didn’t seem to be taking the veteran Bockwinkel seriously , taking every chance to showboat and mock the former AWA world champion. Not a good idea against one of the most cagey men in wrestling. After an extended sequence slugging away at Bock, the American champ made the mistake of thinking he was out of commission when he was only playing possum. When Luger turned his back to him and gave a mocking double bicep flex to the crowd, Bockwinkel snuck up behind him and caught him in a tight-grab assisted roll up to get a shocking one two three. Luger was livid at this result but he has no one but himself to blame for not treating the former World champ with the resepct he deserved.

Good use of Foley this early in his career. A perfect character for him. "Special Forces" Bundy is also an awesome name! lol

The finish to the Atlas/Wahoo match felt almost like a squash. That was pretty shocking to read how Tony disposed of the Chief.

Look at the names in both the TV and house show main events... Quite the stacked roster, and good use as well of many of the talents that weren't necessarily major stars. I'm a British Steel guy for sure...

Really enjoyed your writing for the ESPN show. A little background goes a long way and you did just that for newcomers Jesse Barr and Fallen Angel. The Atlas-Wahoo match was interesting as I am not used to either playing the heel but they could both be awesome at either heel or face.

Wahoo was actually working heel around this time period IRL. I admit I am using the heel Tony Atlas angle several years ahead of when it actually happened, but that was the role that most interested me when I picked him up (he did actually do a couple of baby face guest appearances for me from WWA in the early days of the project).

Kabuki and Khan are a great fit here.

Personally I've always preffered heel Wahoo because it fits hit imposing hard hitting style. Would love to see him in CCW one day.

Orndorff vs. Muraco for the AWA title feels right....I'm enjoying Mr Wonderful as champ

I'm sure Jesse Barr is excited to get to be "Jesse Barr" instead of an "Anderson" or wearing a hood.

AWA All-Star Wrestling on ESPN / TSN for August 16th

The Great Kabuki, Kendo Nagasaki & Killer Khan vs. Ryan Opray, Ryan Shoulders & Osten Taylor

After his shocking return to the AWA at the Bloomington show, Killer Khan (along with his Sinister Syndicate cohorts and joined by Sheikh Adnan Al-Kaissie and Tojo Yamamoto) showed his dominance as his team tore through the trio of young rookies. Opray, Shoulders and Taylor never stood a chance as the Syndicate dissected them until Kabuki and Kendo hit a double thrust kick on Shoulders to put them out of their misery. This, however, was not enough for Kaissie, who had Khan put Taylor in the Oriental Chokehold until the ref ordered him to let it go with a threat of suspension. The arms race between the Syndicate and the Cobra Corps has clearly reached terrifying new heights.

Memphis Vice vs. The Onyx Express

It seems like only yesterday that Memphis Vice put on an impressive winning streak against the team now known as the Onyx Express, but Brickhouse and Koko are clearly determined to turn that into a distant memory. Now that they are under the tutelage of Tony Atlas, the Onyx Express have taken no prisoners in their matches and Bryant and Winston were now paying the price for that change of attitude. Every time Memphis Vice tried to rally, the Express shut it down brutally with a cheap shot or a nasty double team before finally putting the match to an end by hitting the Spike Brainbuster on both men in quick succession. There was a time when it seemed like Koko and Brickhouse were becoming something of a joke, but who is laughing now?

Leo Burke vs. Curt Hennig

Hennig had come to the attention of Playboy After Dark during their feud with Nick Bockwinkel, and they clearly still bear a grudge, as they have send Canada’s Toughest Man against him. Burke really made Hennig pay some dues, pounding him with heavy punches and stretching him with painful wear down holds, but the second generation favorite just kept coming back. Little by little , Hennig took control of the match, and when Burke desperately tried to shut it down by trapping him in the Sleeper, Hennig broke out of it with some powerful elbows to the midsection. Hennig then followed it up with the Cradle Suplex to get the pin.

AWA Southern Title match : Al Perez © vs. Mike Shaw

Col. Buck Robley’s Army has been gunning for Perez’s Southern Title lately, and now they have brought in their biggest gun, “The Tank” Mike Shaw. Shaw looked to use his incredible size and power to overwhelm Perez, but the canny “Latin Heartthrob” used his speed and technical knowhow to work his way out of a lot of tight spots. He used several armlocks to try to take the power slam out of the occasion, and kept sticking and moving to keep himself out of danger. Shaw eventually took the action to the outside and tried to hit a running splash, but Perez rolled out of the way just in time and was able to make it back into the ring while Shaw was staggered. Perez got the victory by count out , but the Army wasn’t done coming after him by a long shot.

AWA World Tag Title match : The British Bulldogs © vs. The Moondogs

It was a real dogfight (tee hee) as the champs pitted their high impact, high speed offense against the crazy brawling of the Moondogs. Although the Bulldogs impressed the fans with their spectacular moves, the Moondogs just kept coming at them like something out of a horror movie. Eventually, Rex brought the ring bell into the ring and hit Davey Boy with it, leading to the ref to declare the match a DQ win for the champions. All four men kept slugging it out long after the ref called the match.

I just played British Bulldogs vs Moondogs on Fire Pro Wrestling World (out now on Steam Early Release). What a coincidence!

Nagasaki, Kabuki, and Khan are a perfect 80s foreign heel stable.

I'm so jealous, I won't lie. Heard nothing but great things about that new release.

Orndorff retained the World Title.

That main event sounded like a dog fight. Very well booked couple of weeks and moving some pieces around in the card. There is a lot of upward movement possible in the AWA with the way you book it which is a great thing.

AWA All-Star Wrestling on ESPN / TSN for August 13th

Cpl. Scott Hall vs. Jerry Blackwell

Before he left the AWA, “Crusher” Jerry Blackwell had the fans solidly in his corner, but since his return he has cared about the opinon of nobody except Sheikh Adnan Al-Kaissie . “Crusher” ruthlessly went after the knee of the powerful young recruit of the Cobra Corps, bowling over Hall and getting him in several painful leglocks. Hall tried to fight back, but the damage done to his knee undercut his attempts at power moves, ultimately collapsing then trying to power slam the huge Blackwell. Blackwell followed up with a running splash to get a victory for the Sinister Syndicate.

Buddy Rose vs. Wahoo McDaniel

“Playboy” Buddy Rose has had some difficulty gaining momentum since losing the Southern title to Al Perez, and certainly was facing stiff competition tonight in the person of Wahoo McDaniel. The double tough veteran really took it to Rose, blasting him with brutal chops and kicks as well as twisting his limbs every which way. Rose tried to rally against this withering offense, but his efforts were swiftly shut down by Wahoo. Wahoo had him trapped in the corner and was blistering him with chops, but when the ref tried to separate the two, Rose took advantage by taking the padding off the turnbuckle. When Wahoo came back with an overhand chop, Rose dodged out of the way and Wahoo brought his hand down hard on the exposed turnbuckle bolt. While Wahoo winced in pain, Rose swept him off his feet and put his own feet on the ropes to get the leveraged pin.

Da Crusher vs. Dan Spivey

This was a show down of the unconventional brawling of Da Crusher and the impressive power offense of Spivey. The battle waged back and forth, with first one man gaining the advantage then the other one fighting back to have the upper hand. It looked like Crusher was starting to pull ahead with a series of clubbing punches, but when he came rushing in for the Bolo Punch, Spivey got his boot up just in time. Crusher was staggerd, and Spivey took him down with a lariat, following up with a big running leg drop to get the win.

Nick Bockwinkel vs. Bob Roop

After a lengthy way with Playboy After Dark, Bockwinkel seems to have set his sights on challenging the Sinister Syndicate. Facing off against the enforcer of the Syndicate, Nick and Roop has a breathtaking technical showdown that really got the fans attention. In a match that mostly took place with both men working the mat in the proverbial case of Human Chess, they exchanged leglocks and limb work to try to soften each other up to try and move in for kill. Ultimately , it was Bockwinkel who was able to finally trap Roop in the Figure Four and force him to submit. An impressive victory for Bockwinkel, who looks like he is intending to work his way up the Syndicates chain to challenge for Lex Luger’s American title.

AWA Southern Tag Team Title match : Badd Company © vs. Buzz Sawyer & Dave Schultz

Another exciting match that pitted the high speed, high flying offense of the champions against the rough and tumble style of Col. Robley’s Army. Sawyer and Schultz were clearly out to inflict some punishment on Sunshine’s men, but Tanaka and Diamond gave as good as they got, showing why they are the champs. Badd Company had Sawyer set up for Tanaka to thrust kick him into a Diamond suplex, but Jesse Barr had rushed out to the ring by this point and yanked down the top rope, causing Tanaka to plummet to the outside. The Army proceeded to beat down the champs until Al Perez charged out to even the sides, forcing a retreat on the part of the Colonel’s soldiers.

AWA World Title match : Paul Orndorff © vs. Rick Steiner

Orndorff has ducked no challengers in defense of the AWA World Title, and he certainly had his hands full with the powerful rookie Steiner. The University of Michigan letterman brought a wealth of amateur skill to the battle and matched Orndorff suplex for suplex and power move for power move. On a couple of occasions, it looked like Fallen Angel was going to interfere in the match, but then Kevin Sullivan would say something in her ear and she would hold back, as though he had given her the order to stand down while he observed the match. Steiner was trying to get Orndorff in a belly to back suplex, but Orndorff reversed the waistlock and whipped him into the ropes to catch him in a mighty power slam. One piledriver later and Orndorff had successfully defended his title. Steiner had lost but Sullivan escorted him from the ring with an oddly thoughtful look on his face.
