STARRCADE

December 25th, 1985

Colisée de Québec

Before the show starts, the timekeeper tolls the bell 10 times in tribute to Mad Dog Lefebvre and senior referee Adrien Desbois, who passed away on Christmas Eve in a tragic car accident in the Laurentides Park last night. A moment of silence is also held for them.

The broadcast team of Guy Hauray & Édouard Carpentier welcome the TV audience to the Quebec City part of Starrcade, which will of course be headlined by the WCCW & NWA World Heavyweight Championship Unification Match between Rick Martel and Ric Flair. Of course, they mention that tonight’s show will be dedicated to the late Mad Dog Lefebvre and Adrien Desbois. Luigi Macera will now act as the senior referee in Lutte Internationale. We’re now ready for our first match.

Floyd Creatchman’s Open Challenge

The Creatchman Family (Prince Alofa Fatu & The Great Samu, w/Floyd Creatchman) vs Huracan Castillo & Miguel Perez (WWC)

It turns out that Puerto Rico sensations Huracan Castillo & Miguel Perez were the ones to answer Floyd Creatchman’s open challenge for his Samoan destruction machines. And obviously, this caught Samu & Fatu off-guard a bit because in the early stages, it is all Castillo & Perez as they wow the Quebec City faithful with their cohesion. However, the dastardly Floyd Creatchman pulling a trick out of his father’s book as he pulled the ropes, making Castillo fall outside the ring. That’s the only opening the Samoans needed to get the advantage back. After a valiant effort by the Porto Ricans, despite the hot tag, Miguel Perez will fall prey to Samu & Fatu’s top rope splashes, securing a win to a hopefully ominous night for the Creatchman Family.

Winners: The Creatchman Family

NWA 6-Man Championship

The Hart Brothers (Keith, Bruce, Owen) ©

VS.

The Kiwi Sheepherders/Bam Bam Bigelow

The action starts fast as Keith Hart takes Jonathan Boyd down with a series of arm drags. Rip Morgan runs in but Bruce and Owen run in and take him down with a double forearm smash. Boyd gets up and runs at the Hart Brothers, who back body drop him over. Morgan charges and he gets back body dropped by all three Harts. Bam Bam Bigelow runs into the ring and hits the Hart Brothers with a clothesline/Body Block, which knocks them down like bowling pins. After the Ref regains control, the Sheepherders take control with a series of body slams and choke holds on Owen. Owen takes advantage of a Sheepherder collision and makes the tag to Bruce. Bruce cleans house! The Harts stay in control with drop kicks and back body drops. Keith gets an eye rake by Boyd. Morgan holds Keith’s arms behind his back from the apron. Boyd runs in with a high knee but Keith ducks and Boyd nails Morgan! Keith rolls over and tags in Owen while Bam Bam reaches down and tags himself in. Boyd hits Owen and that brings in all the Harts. All 6 men are brawling. Keith and Bruce end up on the outside fighting with the Sheepherders. Owen is doing his best at fighting Bam Bam. Bam Bam clubs Owen then swings him to the ropes but misses a clothesline attempt. Owen comes back with a flying body press but Bam Bam catches him and turns him over for a power slam. Bam Bam climbs to the top turnbuckle, leaps off and crashes down on Owen with a diving head butt! The ref counts 1..2..3! We have new NWA 6 Man Champions! Bruce and Keith run in to check on Owen as Bam Bam holds up the titles in the middle of the ring, while the Sheepherders are still out on the floor.

No DQ Match

Jos LeDuc vs King Tonga (w/Frenchy Martin)

It didn’t take long for this rivalry to heat up as King Tonga wreaked havoc ever since his return to the territory. And reflecting this situation, it didn’t take long for both men to beat each other senseless. One of the most stunning images of the match came as both Jos and Tonga were brawling outside and Jos took the ring announcer’s wooden chair. Jos grabbed it and broke it on Tonga’s head....WHO ABSOLUTELY DIDN’T FLINCH! Then afterwards, it got ugly in a hurry as the battle mostly took place outside of the ring. Frenchy Martin provided the distraction for his protégé as Jos LeDuc was about to piledrive Tonga head first on the concrete. As Jos was about to hit Frenchy Martin, King Tonga used some camera cables and wrapped it around Jos’s neck to strangle him! Tonga pushed the savagery to another level as he got back in the ring and lifted Jos by the neck, using the cables! LeDuc is turning all shades of blue and eventually, he passes out! Referee Luigi Macera has no choice but to stop the match and award King Tonga the match!

Winner: King Tonga by referee stoppage

Abdullah the Butcher vs. Kamala

The fans are in awe as they watch the entrances of these two behemoths. Before the bell rings, Abdullah runs over with a foreign object and starts hitting Kamala. Kamala manages to knock the object out of Abdullah’s hand. They both end up on the outside slugging away at each other. Kamala rams Abdullah’s head into the steel post which draws blood. Kamala walks around the ring, slapping his stomach. He walks over to Abdullah but Abdullah hits him with a chair. The Ref is calling for the bell. The bell rings several times. Officials run out to try and break them up. Most of them get tossed aside by both Kamala and Abdullah. Finally, other wrestlers come out and stop this madness.

Official Ruling- No Contest

Texas Death Match

Billy Robinson (w/Sherri Martel) vs AWA World Tag Team Champion “Playboy” Buddy Rose (AWA)

Before the match starts, Guy Hauray & Édouard Carpentier explain the rules of a Texas Death Match to the viewers at home; in order to win the match, a wrestler must pin his opponent for the count of 3 before the referee can initiate the 10-count. If a wrestler can’t beat the 10-count, he loses the match. Just to rile Billy Robinson a bit more, Buddy Rose once again brings a box of chocolates to Sherri Martel, who seems to be happy but somewhat contrived as well. As expected, Billy Robinson finally unloads weeks of frustration on Buddy Rose, who can only defend himself as best as he can as he chooses to weather the storm before mounting an attack on Robinson. Several near attempts of putting the other out of commission turn into failure and Billy Robinson is able to hit his double underhook suplex on Buddy Rose, but the Playboy is able to beat the count of 10, much to Robinson’s dismay. Robinson has had enough and he steps outside to retrieve….Sherri’s box of chocolates? Robinson slides back in and Sherri follows suit, pleading for the situation to stop. Robinson wants to hit Buddy but Buddy blocks it and takes the box of chocolates from Billy. Sherri steps in between both men and takes the box from Buddy. After a few seconds of arguing…..SHERRI HITS BILLY ROBINSON WITH THE BOX OF CHOCOLATES! Robinson is out cold and Buddy Rose makes the pinfall. Referee André Roy then continues with the 10-count and Robinson is counted out! What a turn of events! Sherri turned her back on Billy Robinson and sided with Buddy Rose! What does this mean for the other Sensationals, currently in Greensboro???

Winner: Buddy Rose

Mid Atlantic Championship Open Challenge

Pete Doherty wildly walks around the ring, holding up his title belt. He shakes his head and yells at the fans. He continues to hold up his title and yells at anyone within earshot. Finally he grabs the mic.

“Just start the 10 count, its obvious nobody wants to face the Duke of Dorchester!”

The fans roar as Harley Race walks down the aisle! Harley steps up on the apron, points to Doherty’s title and points to the Ref. The Ref grabs the title from Doherty and holds it up to the crowd. Doherty is wildly shaking his head NO. The Ref makes the signal and the bell rings. Doherty runs over and swings at Harley. Harley blocks it and punches away on Doherty. Harley lifts Doherty up in a hanging suplex position, and then drops him back. Harley hits a swinging neck breaker on Doherty. Harley picks Doherty up and drops him with the Piledriver! The Ref counts 1..2..3! The fans cheer as the Ref raises Harley’s hand. Harley gets the Mid Atlantic title, throws it over his shoulder and gives the camera a ‘Number One’ sign.

Winner and New Mid-Atlantic Champion- Harley Race

Quebec Heavyweight Championship

Armand Rougeau © vs Boris Zhukov

Before the match starts, Boris Zhukov takes the mic and taunts Armand, saying that he’s taking this title back to Mother Russia and he’ll never see this title again, just like the NWA Canadian International TV Title belt. The broadcast team mentions that both attempts to have Super Strong Machine wrestle in Quebec City this week have failed as his visa issues will be settled on December 31, so he will only be able to defend his title on January 3 in an open challenge. Zhukov is looking to end this early but Armand is definitely on his best game and he’s fighting with everything he’s got. Zhukov traps Armand into a bearhug and Zhukov can feel the victory and the title coming back to him. However, in a last ditch effort, Armand escapes the bearhug and regains control! Zhukov’s demise will come as an attempted back body drop is turned into a beautiful sunset flip and Armand scores the victory to retain his title! Zhukov is irate as he returns backstage, realizing that he blew his last shot at regaining that title.

Winner and still champion: Armand Rougeau

Rock n Roll Express vs. Stan Hansen/Bruiser Brody

One thing is for sure, the Mid Atlantic fans love the RnR Express as they get a huge pop from the Greensboro crowd. The pop turns to panic as Hansen and Brody barge down the aisle, knocking over anything or anyone in their way.

RnR start off fast, using their speed and quick tags to their advantage. They frustrate Hansen and keep him off balanced for a while with their double team moves. The tide turns when Morton goes for a back body drop but Hansen kicks him in the face. The next few minutes are all Hansen and Brody as they pretty much annihilate Ricky Morton. Brody pummels and kicks away on Morton. He scoop slams Morton down hard then tags in Hansen. Hansen just continues the beating with clubbing shots and hard kicks. Gibson starts stomping the apron as the crowd claps along. Hansen swings Morton into the turnbuckles, then charges in but Morton rolls out of the way. Morton somersaults to his corner and makes the hot tag to Gibson! Gibson fires away on Hansen, Brody comes in and Gibson drop kicks him back into the turnbuckles. Gibson swings Hansen hard into the turnbuckles, and then follows with a monkey flip. Brody charges over and hits Gibson. A battered Ricky Morton comes in and he and Gibson start unloading on Brody with closed fists. They knock Brody against the turnbuckles. The Ref is trying to regain control. Hansen staggers up and is met with a double dropkick! Gibson goes for the cover. As Morton stands up he’s nailed with a big boot from Brody! Brody stomps Gibson’s head before going back to his corner. Hansen rolls over and up. Gibson hobbles up and is nearly decapitated by a Hansen clothesline! Hansen covers 1..2..3!

Winners- Stan Hansen/Bruiser Brody

NWA World Women’s Championship

The Fabulous Moolah © vs Madusa Miceli

An historical moment at Starrcade as this is the first time that a major women’s championship is being defended at the event. The broadcast team hypes how much they’re hopeful that the Women’s championship will become a staple of that National Wrestling Alliance and how the women’s division will showcase their abilities to the rest of the territory. The Fabulous Moolah shows a lot of confidence in the early going, taunting the challenger. Moolah might be more experienced than Madusa but Madusa is definitely quicker and this tremendously helps her in the match. Madusa seems poised to become the new champion as she hits her Bridging German Suplex on Moolah. Referee counts 3! We have a new champion!!!....but hold on a second, the referee raises Moolah’s hand? What happened there? After the replay is shown, it turns out that the referee counted Madusa’s shoulder to the mat –which they were – and not Moolah’s! In the case of a draw, the champion retains! Madusa is absolutely disgusted with herself and she chases the referee to get more explanations! What will the NWA Board of Directors do about this?

Double pinfall; Fabulous Moolah retains the championship

NWA TV Title Bout-No Time Limit

Sam Houston © vs. Terry Taylor

This one starts off fast as both men exchange wrestling moves, hold for hold, with neither man gaining a distinct advantage. After a few minutes, Houston swings Taylor into the turnbuckles and charges in but is met with a high knee from Taylor. Taylor hits him with a body slam, and then hops up on the 2nd turnbuckle and comes down with a knee drop. He covers but Houston kicks out. Taylor picks up Houston and suplexes him back, follows with an elbow drop and cover 1..2..Kick out! Taylor swings Houston to the ropes and hooks him up in an abdominal stretch. The Ref is asking Houston if he wants to submit. The crowd is cheering Houston on. Houston bounces up and down and then takes Taylor over with a hip toss. Houston regroups. Taylor gets up and is met with a dropkick. Taylor spins around and hops up and is met by another dropkick. Houston swings Taylor to the ropes and hip tosses him over. Houston picks up Taylor and clamps on a headlock. He wrenches away and then swings Taylor hard into the turnbuckles. Houston clamps on the headlock again, wrenches away, and then twirls his fingers. Houston runs with Taylor, going for the bulldog but Taylor pushes Houston forward. Houston runs into the turnbuckles and staggers backwards. Taylor suplexes Houston back into a bridging position. The Ref counts 1..2..3! Taylor gets on his knees and raises his arms. Houston rolls over and sits against the turnbuckles. The Ref goes out and gets the TV title. Houston stops him and gently takes the title. Houston walks over to Taylor and hands him the title then offers a handshake. Taylor is taken aback and hesitates. Taylor nods his head and shakes Houston’s hand as the crowd cheers this great act of sportsmanship.

Winner and New NWA TV Champion- Terry Taylor

WCCW TV Title Bout

‘Gorgeous’ Jimmy Garvin w/Precious © vs. ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper

These two have developed quite a rivalry in a short amount of time. The last time they saw each other, Garvin hit Piper across the head with his WCCW title belt. It’s obvious Piper hasn’t forgotten this because he jumps Garvin right when the bell rings and unloads on him. Piper punches away on Garvin, then a big right hand sends Garvin out of the ring. Precious runs over to comfort Garvin. Garvin gets up on the apron and yells at Piper. Piper runs over and hits Garvin and then suplexes him back into the ring. Piper puts his knee on Garvin’s chest, grabs him by his hair and punches away on him. Precious gets up on the apron, waving her spray can around. Piper stands up and heads towards her. They start arguing. Piper grabs Precious by her head and then kisses her on her forehead! An irate Garvin runs up from behind and nails Piper on the back of his head with a forearm bash. Garvin staggers up and Piper hits him with an open hand slap on his chest. Piper starts whaling away then pokes two fingers into Garvin’s eyes. Piper clamps on the sleeper! Garvin is flailing around and the momentum takes them both through the ropes and outside the ring. Piper reapplies the sleeper on the outside. Precious runs towards them and tries to spray Piper. Piper throws down Garvin and grabs the spray can from Precious. Precious runs away. Piper rolls in and out of the ring to stop the Ref’s count. Garvin staggers up and Piper gives him a quick spray in the eyes. Piper swings Garvin back into the ring. The Ref is counting. The Ref counts to 10! The crowd’s boos are deafening! The Ref lifts up Garvin’s hand. Embry is laughing hysterically as he runs into the ring to help Garvin. Piper runs into the ring and grabs both of their heads and knocks them together. Garvin flies out of the ring. Embry tries to crawl out but Piper grabs him by his belt and drags him back. NWA Canadian International Tag Team Championship Triangle Match

The Vachons © vs The Midnight Rockers vs AWA Southern Tag Team Champions Badd Company

The rules of the match go as follows: 2 men in the ring at each time; you can tag anyone in the match, not just your teammate; the match is under elimination format. When one man of a team is eliminated, both partners are eliminated. The Midnight Rockers seem to be in rare form and determined to regain their titles. The broadcast team discuss the Rockers’ declaration of how they don’t deserve to be in Lutte if they don’t regain the titles tonight. The champions smartly appear sporadically in the early goings of the match as the action is focused on The Midnight Rockers and Badd Company. Lots of fast-paced action going in this match as both teams trade momentum and pinfalls away. However, the tide seems to turn as Paul Diamond rammed his shoulder in the post after whipping Shawn Michaels in the corner. Needless to say that the champions smelled blood and once they got the tag in, they started working on Paul Diamond’s shoulder and the Vachons were well on their way on eliminating Badd Company from the match but Shawn Michaels’ ego gets the better of the situation and he tags himself in at the expense of Mad Dog Vachon! A shouting match between both Vachon and Michaels, allowed Diamond to tag in Pat Tanaka and Badd Company cleaned house. With Diamond’s shoulder in bad condition, Badd Company uses their Superkick/Bridging German Suplex combo to pin Michaels! The Midnight Rockers are the first team eliminated! It is now down to the NWA Canadian International Tag Team Champions the Vachons and the AWA Southern Tag Team Champions Badd Company! The Vachons are zeroeing in on Diamond’s shoulder injury and while Diamond fights as hard as he can despite the injury, but there is too much to overcome as a spike piledriver puts an end to Badd Company’s bid of becoming the champions.

Winners and still champions: The Vachons

Steel Cage Match

Black Bart © (w/Outlaw Ron Bass) vs Jacques Rougeau (w/Raymond Rougeau)

It didn’t come to a surprise to anyone that Black Bart didn’t show up to Quebec City alone as “Outlaw” Ron Bass is in Black Bart’s corner while brother Raymond is in the corner of Jacques Rougeau. Tension is high as Black Bart insults Jacques and the Quebec City crowd in the process. Jacques responds immediately by sending Bart face first on the cage! The broadcast team mentions that victory can be attained by pinfall, submission or escaping the cage. It doesn’t take too long for this cage match to become a bloody brawl as both men beat each other senseless and use the cage at their advantage. Things get a bit nastier when somehow, Ron Bass is able to sneak in Bart’s cowbell inside the cage in a moment of confusion while Bass and Raymond are fighting outside the cage. Bart now uses the cowbell more than the cage itself to inflict damage on Jacques. Jacques’ chances are becoming grimmer by the minute but Black Bart’s nasty character will bring an incredible twist of fate for him. Despite being fought under no DQ rules, referee André Roy is trying to take the cowbell away from Black Bart and Bart answered by STRIKING THE REFEREE with the cowbell! With Bart seemingly in control, he heads to the cage door but Raymond is able to neutralize Bass outside the cage, who was trying to get inside the cage himself to help Bart. However, as Bart approaches the door….POW! Raymond slams it in Bart’s face! Bart goes down hard time and Raymond cheers Jacques on his way to the door. Jacques drags himself towards the cage door and Bart is trying to grab Jacques on his way as well, but too late! Jacques is out of the cage. WE HAVE A NEW CHAMPION! The crowd goes nuts as Jacques Rougeau is handed his title back! An emotional hug between brothers Jacques and Raymond tells the whole story here as Armand comes joining his brothers. Huge celebration for the Rougeau family with the crowd!

Winner and new champion: Jacques Rougeau

He wobbles up and waits. Magnum finally turns around and Tully nails him with the object. Magnum goes down and Tully falls back. Other Referees come down and escort the Andersons out of there. WCCW World Heavyweight Championship & NWA World Heavyweight Championship Unification Match

Rick Martel (WCCW World Heavyweight Champion) vs “Nature Boy” Ric Flair (NWA World Heavyweight Champion)

Tension is high and excitement has reached its climax. FINALLY, the big match has arrived. Oddly enough, it is the fan favourite, Rick Martel, current WCCW World Champion, who walks out to the ring first and the NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair is the last man to enter the ring. Probably the most intense staredown ever felt in the Colisée takes place and the Nature Boy is oozing confidence, despite the fact there are no Horsemen and no JJ Dillon to help him out. Neither than the man who took him up on the bounty, “Maniac” Matt Borne, who’s working the Greensboro part of the event. Martel and Flair are painting a masterpiece right in front of the Quebec City faithful; Flair playing mind games with Martel; Martel matching up Flair hold for hold; quick nearfalls; Flair trying to steal the victory away and even intimidating referee Luigi Macera, who answers back with a slap to Naitch’s face. This match has everything. Everything seems to go smoothly for WCCW World Champion but Flair changes the complexion in a heartbeat after clipping Martel’s knee. The same knee that the late Mad Dog Lefebvre & Richard Charland attacked last August, when first trying to cash in on Flair’s bounty. The next 7 minutes or so consist of Flair working his way to applying his patented Figure Four Leglock. And then, it happens; Flair drags Martel in the middle of the ring and slaps in the Figure Four! Martel is writhing in pain as he’s trying to drag his way off to the ropes. Martel is able to reach the ropes and Flair must break it! Flair attempts a 2nd Figure Four but Martel shoves him shoulder first in the corner. Martel rolls him up for a 2-count! Martel is struggling to get back on his feet but adrenaline takes over and Martel is mounting a spectacular comeback. Martel sets up Flair with the slingshot splash but Flair raises his knees and Martel lands on them. Flair drags Martel in the middle of the ring to set him up for another Figure Four…but Martel counters with a small package…1….2….3!!!! IT’S OVER! RICK MARTEL HAS FINALLY DONE IT! RICK MARTEL IS THE UNIFIED NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP! The hometown crowd goes absolutely berserk as NWA Enforcer Bruno Sammartino comes out to hand over to Rick Martel the new NWA World Heavyweight Championship belt. Several wrestlers like the Rougeau Brothers & The Vachons come out to celebrate with Martel. Starrcade concludes with Martel being lifted on the Rougeaus shoulders as he raises the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in the air!

Not sure what else there is to say but the NWA has taken over the game. This is exactly what WCW, WCCW and Memphis along with a few others tried to do in real life when they formed Pro Wrestling USA to stop Vince but their egos got in the way. No egos here and the NWA is on top of the world. It makes the UWF wonder what their next move should be. I also love the courage to take the belt off of Flair and Martel was a perfect choice!

The title change here makes this the best and most memorable show of the year! This is exactly why the territory system was so much fun compared to what we have now.

Wow, so proud to be a part of this SuperCard! A lot of hard work and months of build up went into this and it paid off in a big way. Looking forward to seeing Martel as World champ and I feel like he has tons of potential...this is one of those pivital moments in the game where things go in a new direction and explore what "might have been" IRL.

Huge win for King Tonga over Leduc which should springboard him to the top of the card in Lutte.

Happy to see the Andersons with the World tag team titles to help hold the Horsemen together with some tough losses for Flair and Blanchard.

Huge win for Kerry Von Erich which should help put him in the mix to challenge Rick Martel sooner or later.

1986 is going to be a banner year for the NWA!

Such a HUGE card. There's just so much going on that it's hard to really pick anything out. I loved the King Tonga match, but anything with him I usually mark out for. Such an underused talent in his time. I like that you didn't go full copy on the 1985 Starrcade match with Tully/Magnum. Which reminds me that it's the right time of year for a rewatch.

LOVE IT! Great super-card for the NWA. Really excited to see that Martel took the World title here. I agree with the statement earlier about the Andersons getting that World Tag Team titles, as the Horsemen needed some momentum after the two main event losses on this show. But what a fun read. The two venue idea was exactly as I'd hoped. I'm really glad to see that the NWA continues to grow and be a huge part of 1986. I love the two cage idea at the separate venues, with the World title unification being in a regular one on one setting. Great job by everyone involved!
