Yeah, I got here sort of in the final 1/4th or so of the GWE and decided not to submit, so when the opportunity came to help get this off the ground I was pretty pumped to be involved.

We have a pretty solid start on nominations going right now and am happy to see people pumped about this already.

Is it acceptable for this to throw out nominations like say Eddie Kingston vs. Mike Quackenbush from High Noon. Nothing that will ever make a list but something that's worthwhile and people might have missed?

I can't really speak for everyone, but I would sort of take this approach:

If you think it deserves consideration as a greatest GME candidate, even if you likely wont vote for it if you turned in a ballot now, sure! I don't think people should feel like they can or cannot nominate based on what they assume people will vote for.

However, if you just think it is a match that people should see, I think there are probably other forums for that.

The line is thin and fuzzy but it comes down to intent for me. To nominate we hope people will take a minute to talk about why it is nominated (though honestly I got pretty burnt while doing lots so mine got pretty surface level and redundant). If you think it should be in the conversation with greatest matches ever... go for it. I am sure I will have a few matches that are super long shots for anyone's list, but I may think they have qualities that deserve consideration.

GWE was... umm.... divisive. The powers that be - I think smartly - decided it should be a separate project so as to avoid potentially building on that in this space.

Plus I think logistically this is going to require a a lot of threads and it is probably easier to just keep it separate since there are match threads here and the conversations might be somewhat different.

I'm on board with this. Much more up my alley than the wrestler ranking bullshit. Why isn't it on PWO, though?

I asked that it not be, since GWE's lasting impact on this board was a bit negative and the discussion became too personal at times. I don't think that's the destiny of all countdown projects, and I'm sure this one will go well. It's just that for a variety of reasons, I don't think this is the right message board to do it.

Hope GME is nearly as successful as GWE at creating long lasting grudges.

Every time I've sat down and tried ranking wrestlers I freeze up when I start asking myself some questions about the whole thing and end up concluding the whole thing is bunk.

"How can I factor in the contributions of agents and trainers into my list?"

"How can I make a list without ridiculously over-privileging guys with tons of taped matches over those less fortunate?"

"How do I compare guys working shoot-style schedule to WWE schedule?"

"Is it possible to make a list that isn't simply a ranking of guys with most taped great matches/Is it possible to make a list that isn't simply a ranking of styles?"

"Is the whole thing a waste of time when I've never worked a match and have no idea how easy or hard any of these guys actually are to work with?"

The whole ranking wrestlers thing seems very emotionally based to me, hence the grudges. It's impossible to agree on a solid criteria of how to do it and there's always gonna be a lot of issues, so emotions end up dominating. Ranking taped matches is comparatively much more simple and less problematic, so I doubt it will be anything like what we saw with GWE.
