JWA Tour-Opening Show: March 4th, Sapporo

Welcome Back Hoshino Match: Gran Hamada vs Kantaro Hoshino

A purely entertaining match. The two awesome little guys bounced around the ring, exchanging strikes, holds, and counters, building up to a battle of Flying Cross Bodies that went on for almost five minutes as they kept coming up with new ways to escape the pin… until finally Hamada caught Hoshino clean in the middle of the ring for the 1,2…3

Patera, Blackwell, & Spivey vs Mighty Animals & Masa Fuchi

Inoue, Hamaguchi, and Fuchi back down to no man… but the AWA trio were just too big and powerful and eventually the Tenryu’s Gang trio were overwhelmed and beaten down. Fuchi fought back with fury, going after Spivey’s eyes and throat, but that just made the new AWA American Champion angry. He fired back at Fuchi in kind, and then put him down with the Spivey Bomber.

Welcome Back Fishman Match: Dos Caras & Fishman vs Takada & Funaki

A fast-paced technical match. Dos Caras and Fishman focused their punishment on Takada and Funaki’s backs. The young shoot stylists went after the luchadores’ legs. After about 15 minutes of back and forth grappling, Fishman caught Funaki with La Cavernaria, and he had no choice but to submit.

Mike Shaw Official Debut Match: Super Strong Machine & Footloose vs Bigelow, Hickerson, & Shaw

An interesting showcase for JWA’s newest big man, as he spent most of the match begging off and stooging before coming back with eye pokes and thumbs to the throat. Super Strong Machine got a near-fall after hitting Shaw with a Machine DDT, but Bigelow broke up the pin and proceeded to steal the momentum from the Tenryu’s Gang team. After a little more hard-hitting action, Fuyuki found himself trapped in the heel corner the victim of a nasty triple-team attack. Bigelow and Hickerson, in an impressive display of strength, lifted Mike Shaw high into the air and dropped him on top of Fuyuki, earning Shaw his first pinfall in the JWA.

Mick Foley & John Nord vs Ueda & Goto

DI1xCp1.jpg

A flat-out vicious brawl erupted prior to the opening bell. Ueda busted both big gaijin open with his kendo stick, and got cut up himself by a nasty chair shot before the ref could restore order. As soon as the bell rang, the action went bonzo gonzo again and the fight quickly spilled out of the ring and into the crowd. Tatsutoshi Goto (also bleeding at this point, and also the legal man in the ring for his team) barely managed to beat the 20-count back into the ring The Blonde Heels were awarded the narrow CO victory, and celebrated as if they had won the titles. Then, Foley and Nord stormed the ring and everybody brawled to the back.

***BREAK***

Rugby vs American Football Challenge Match: Tenryu & Hara vs Ron Simmons & Leon White

Zl0KAde.jpg

Is it possible for a match to be too hard-hitting? These men attempted to answer that question here. The jury is still out. In an unexpected twist, Tenryu did most of the bumping and selling for his team, and he made the young Americans look really dangerous. Or, maybe, they just are really dangerous. At any rate, Hara took over completely after the (second) hot tag and knocked Simmons and White around with his basic-but-effective Japanese big man offense. A Superplex on Big Leon shook the ring, but it was a Hitman Lariat that put him away.

Power Rush & Kensuke vs Tsuruta, Yatsu, & Hase

A showcase for the rookies, in advance of next month’s Young Lions Showcase tour. Hase and Kensuke fought hard and earned some respectful applause, but it was the brief but violent Jumbo vs Choshu segment that really popped the crowd. In the end, it was a Piledriver from Yatsu that put Kensuke down for the count.

JWA Middleweight Champion Tiger Mask vs Naoki Sano

SgAbPda.jpg

And, welcome back Naoki Sano. This was worked as a semi-shootstyle match, but with more spin kicks. Sayama gave Sano a ton of offense and there were a few moments where it really seemed like we were going to have a new Middleweight Champion… but eventually Tiger Mask made his big championship match comeback, leading to a Crossface Chickenwing submission at the 25-minute mark.

I love your graphics. How do you get them?

Thanks! I have the new Fire Pro Wrestling World game on my PC. I screen-cap shots from the game then edit them in MS Paint. I absolutely recommend Fire Pro to anyone with any interest in pro wrestling video games. I have over 1000 wrestlers on my roster! You can customize almost everything, (for example ring mats, ring aprons, corner posts...)

Yea Spivey is on fire! He's becoming a huge deal in Fantasy and I love it. So good seeing Tiger Mask. I remember reading all about him in the Mags and its great seeing him in action on here. You can tell White and Simmons are heading for big things in Japan. Really liked the Shaw finish, must of been an awesome visual. Tsuruta, Yatsu and Hase looked strong.

JWA TV Taping – March 14th

Asahi TV World Pro Wrestling (ワールド・プロレスリング)

Commentary Team: Ichiro Furutachi and Takashi Yamada

Misawa & Hase vs Mutoh & Chono

It’s fair to say that, in about six years, this will be a dream match that could sell out any building in Japan. Right now, it’s an all-action crowd-pleasing opening match. Mutoh and Hase show flashes of some amazing chemistry. A Frog Splash from Misawa on Chono is the finisher.

Jumbo & Yatsu vs Mighty Animals

Jumbo & Yatsu come out of the gate on fire, and basically demolish Inoue & Hamaguchi. The Mighty Animals get a few brief hope spots, but otherwise this is a glorified squash match. After putting Hamaguchi away with a Powerbomb, Jumbo gets on the mic and calls out the JWA Tag Team Champions, Power Rush. Tatsumi Fujinami and Kengo Kimura come down to ringside and make a similar challenge. Giant Baba books the teams to face each other in a number one contender’s match on the 24th.

Ron Simmons & Black Irish vs Ueda, Goto, & Kensuke

A crazy violent encounter, highlighted by: Tatsutoshi Goto and Finlay going toe to toe in the middle of the ring exchanging incredibly stiff strikes; Kensuke and Lethal Larry Cameron trading power moves; and Ron Simmons knocking the Japanese heels off their feet with Flying Shoulder Blocks, and putting Kensuke down for the count with a Spinning Side Slam. Ueda and Goto then issue a challenge for the teams to meet again on the 24th, but with a mystery partner replacing Kensuke. Simmons, Cameron, and Finlay don’t hesitate for a moment. It’s on!

Baba, Teranishi, Koshinaka & Hamada vs Fujiwara, Takada, Funaki, & Yamada

A fast-paced, cleanly-fought, scientific bout highlighted by some very nice high flying from Yamada and Hamada, and some slick mat work out of Baba and Fujiwara. Eventually, Yamada gets caught in the wrong corner and eats a Waterwheel Drop from Teranishi followed by a Samurai Driver '84 from Koshinaka that earns Baba’s Family the victory.

Dos Caras & El Canek vs Atisanoe & Afi

MaP2j4U.jpg?1

El Canek and Atisanoe match power with power, and Dos Caras and Siva Afi trade some flashy (if a bit sloppy) offense; and the two teams go back and forth for several minutes, seemingly evenly matched. Then, JWA Tag Team Champions Power Rush make their way to ringside. They don’t directly interfere in the match, but they are clearly hoping to serve as a distraction. However, their tactics backfire. Dos Caras tags in El Canek then flies outside of the ring, knocking Choshu and Rusher over with a huge Pescado. Atisanoe leaves his corner to attend to his stable-mates, leaving Afi alone in the ring to eat a Military Press Drop from El Canek. The victorious Mexican team then challenges Power Rush to a title match on the 24th.

Tenryu & Footloose vs Bigelow, Hickerson, & Shaw

This match starts out hard-hitting and nasty, and quickly grows out of control. Tenryu and Bigelow exchange strikes in the middle of the ring as Kawada, Fuyuki, Hickerson, and Shaw brawl around the ringside area. Kawada gets tossed into the crowd, and then Hickerson and Shaw go to work on Fuyuki. They drape his leg over the ringside barrier and batter his knee with folding chairs. Tenryu charges out of the ring to protect Fuyuki, as the referee struggles to restore order. With the ref distracted, Shaw tosses his chair to Bigelow, who comes off the top rope to the floor and drives the edge of the chair into the back of Tenryu’s neck. Bigelow rolls back into the ring, and Tenryu is unable to beat the 20-count, giving the big Americans a cheap count-out victory.

JWA Trios Champions The Machines vs Fujinami, Kimura, & Hoshino

Another cleanly-contested bout, featuring a lengthy comedy spot as the 5’3” Hoshino runs circles around the 6’7” Very Tall Machine. Eventually, however, Hoshino gets caught. A Double Underhook Suplex puts him down, and then a very impressive looking Missile Dropkick from Very Tall Machine earns The Machines their first Trios Title defense.

Great opener, and I'm loving Simmons and Black Irish teaming. Baba and Fujiwara squaring off a second time seems like it would be better than the first. Great setup for Bigelow/Tenryu. Very Tall Machine impresses in the main. Once again you have something for everyone across all of the matches, but nothing feels out of place.

Love the team of Caras and Canek and I'm looking forward to their showdown with Power Rush. The trio of Bigelow, Shaw and Hickerson is a lot of fun to watch and it looks like Bam Bam has gotten noticed. Good grief I bet the Japanese fans are liking the hard hitting trio of Simmons and Black Irish. Strong finish as Baba's Family get a big win. You're right about the opener, right now it's a fun action packed opener but just wait until these guys develop. Cant wait for the tour ending show.

Another solid card from top to bottom, the opener alone is a match that will be looked back on years later when those guys become the legends they are destined to be.

Bigelow, Hickerson, Shaw is a fun team especially for Japan! The next card looks to be equally as great...looking forward to Bigelow vs. Tenryu.

JWA Tour-Ending Show – March 24th – Tokyo, Japan

Tiger Mask, Mutoh, & Yamada vs Misawa, Hamada, & Hase

We put our Middleweight Champion in the opening match, so obviously he got the pinfall here (spectacularly, with a Turning Moonsault on the rookie Hiroshi Hase). There were also some nice, crowd-pleasingly athletic interactions between Mutoh and Misawa, and a slick exchange of mat-wrestling between Yamada and Hamada. Hase didn’t get to show off much, but his day will come soon enough.

Footloose (Kawada & Fuyuki) vs Danger Zone (Hickerson & Shaw)

TVW1UUl.jpg

Clash of the Kenny Loggins Theme Songs. Kawada and Fuyuki came out firing, but the big Americans took control by attacking Fuyuki’s knee (which they had damaged on TV on the 14th). After enduring a ton of punishment, Fuyuki popped the crowd with a hot tag to Kawada. Kawada got some revenge on his much larger opponents with a series of very stiff kicks, but eventually Shaw cut him off with an eye poke and a thumb to the throat. Danger Zone then went after Fuyuki, tossing him to the outside and going after his injured knee. When they started using folding chairs again, the ref called for the bell and awarded Footloose the match by virtue of Disqualification. That was slim comfort to Kawada as he helped his injured partner to the back.

Mystery Partner Match: Simmons, Cameron, & Finlay vs Ueda, Goto, & “X”

The crowd erupted in a mixture of joy and horror as Ueda and Goto’s partner was revealed to be none other than Abdullah the Butcher. To their credit, Simmons and Cameron seemed to get a real kick out of bumping and selling for Abby’s Throat Thrusts and Head-butts. Cameron got a nice pop with a Backdrop on Abdullah. About five minutes in, the fork and the kendo stick came into play. About seven minutes in, all six men were bleeding profusely. Finlay made a real mess of Goto, punching his forehead until the young heel’s blonde hair turned bright red. Goto managed to break free and tag in the Madman from the Sudan. The Butcher got some nice heat by nailing Finlay with a pretty good Dropkick. He followed that up with a Running Elbow Drop to Finlay’s throat. The AWA team ate the loss, but the crowd cheered loudly for them as they made their way back to the dressing room.

Mystery Partner Match: Baba, Teranishi, & Koshinaka vs Atisanoe, Afi, & “X”

The mystery man in this one was Bruiser Brody and he and Baba delighted the crowd by starting out as the first two in the ring. They traded Big Boots and Chops, and each man got a two-count, but after five minutes they tagged out and stayed on the ring apron until the finish. Teranishi bumped and sold for the South Pacific Islanders, and they in turn sold for Koshinaka’s entertaining offense. Around the 15-minue mark, things went bonzo gonzo. Baba and Atisanoe battled on the outside. Umanosuke Ueda and Tatsutoshi Goto emerged through the crowd and attacked the JWA president. Koshinaka rushed to Baba’s defense, but inside the ring Brody hit Teranishi with a Big Boot and a Double Knee Drop and then Siva Afi came off the top rope with a huge Diving Splash on Teranishi to score one more victory for the bad guys. Umanosuke Ueda got on the mic and challenged Baba to choose three friends to meet him, Goto, Brody, and Stan Hansen on April 4th in Osaka.

Tag Team #1 Contenders Match: Tsuruta & Yatsu vs Fujinami & Kimura

This was a pretty good tag team match. Yatsu sold for Fujinami. Kengo Kimura sold for Jumbo. Fujinami got the advantage on Jumbo but Yatsu made the save. Jumbo got the advantage on Fujinami, but Kimura broke up the pinfall attempt. Yatsu and Kimura brawled with intensity. Kimura caught Yatsu with a Flying Leg Lariat, and Tagged in Fujinami who pinned Yatsu with a Dragon Suplex while Kimura kept Tsuruta from breaking it up. Fujinami and Kimura offered handshakes, and Yatsu went to accept but Jumbo pulled him back and they just walked away.

***BREAK***

JWA Trios Champions The Machines vs Patera, Blackwell, & Spivey

YhvnAm7.jpg

The Machines’ second Trios Title defense was significantly more hard-fought than their first. Sumo Machine took a ton of punishment from Patera and Blackwell. Very Tall Machine and Danny Spivey traded stiff strikes and power moves. Super Strong machine broke up half a dozen near-falls. He and Patera had a dramatic battle over a test-of-strength. The Spinning Lifting Full Nelson came very close to finishing SSM, and the American heels came very close to stealing the JWA Trios Titles, but in the end Blackwell got caught in the Machines’ corner and ate an Underhook Suplex from Very Tall Machine and a big Lariat from Sumo Machine before Super Strong Machine put him down for the count with a Machine DDT.

JWA Tag Team Champions Power Rush vs Dos Caras & El Canek

The Luchadores fought clean and fought hard and proved themselves to be worthy contenders. Riki Choshu and Rusher Kimura, however, cut every possible corner. Every time Caras and Canek gained the advantage, Power Rush pulled tights, gouged eyes, and used chokes and other illegal tactics to get the momentum back on their side. Stealing a tactic from the great heels in the World Wrestling Council, they loosened El Canek’s mask and turned it sideways so that he could not see. They then beat Dos Caras down with a quick and vicious series of double team manoeuvres, and finished him off with a Double Lariat Attack.

JWA Heavyweight Champion Tenryu vs Bam Bam Bigelow

vTCFu7Z.jpg

Danger Zone accompanied the challenger to the ring, which brought out a still-furious Toshiaki Kawada. Tenryu and Kawada brawled on the entrance ramp with the three big foreigners as things got completely out of control before the bell even rang. Masa Fuchi and Ashura Hara ran down and chased Danger Zone to the back, but some damage had already been done. As order was restored and the match finally started, Tenryu was already bleeding from his forehead.

Bigelow went right after the cut, using Head-butts and Closed Fist Punches to open it up even wider. The blood only seemed to make Tenryu angry, however, and he fought back with powerful Chops and Kicks. In an impressive display of power and resilience, Bigelow made a comeback and worked over Tenryu’s neck (presumably still injured from the chair attack on the 14th). He hit a Cobra Clutch Bulldog for a close two-count. Bigelow picked Tenryu up off the mat and nailed the JWA Champion with a Military Press Slam. Bigelow then went up to the top corner… but as he was coming off in an attempted Flying Head-butt, Tenryu leapt to his feet and sent Bigelow crashing to the mat with a vicious Kesagiri Chop to the big man’s neck. As Bigelow struggled to his feet, Tenryu nailed him with a Running Shoot Kick. He then picked Bigelow up off the mat, threw a huge Guh Punch at his jaw, then came off the ropes with a thunderous Lariat to end the match and defend his title.

What a fun card! Love the battle of the Kenny Login's songs LOL. Man, Abdullah and Brody looked strong tonight! I was pulling for Caras and Canek but Power Rush were on their A game tonight. Despite their loss, the AWA guys are really getting over with the Japanese crowd. Absolutely loved the main event. Bam Bam put out an excellent showing against one of the best in Tenryu. That was an incredible finish by Tenryu. April 4th is going to be one awesome show.
