Saturday Night Flashbacks #2

Welcome back to Saturday Night Flashbacks! This week we continue the journey into the WWE Network archives and visit the first Saturday Night episode in the journey from Labor Day weekend 1992.

WCW Saturday Night – September 5, 1992: This show was actually taped prior to the Clash and is airing a few days later.

This episode is very short only running about 39 minutes. During the baseball season, Atlanta Braves games sometimes caused a shorter episode of the show. The Braves did play on this evening, but in addition, it appears some of the highlights from the NWA Tournament in Japan that were discussed on the Clash have been edited out of the network version. Oh well, will have to track that footage down at a later time.

We open with a recap of the TV title match from the Clash last Wednesday night. Jim Ross is our host for the evening and he has Teddy Long alongside for the beginning part of the show.

WCW Saturday Night is brought to you by Jolly Rancher Candy. They used to be square shaped candies, huh?

Six-man tag match: Dick Slater, Greg Valentine and Scotty Flamingo vs. Z-man, Marcus Bagwell and Johnny B. Badd – Fun opener with lots of tags back and forth. The match ends when Flamingo accidentally hits Valentine, Badd punches Flamingo and Z-man rolls him up for the 1-2-3! In 5:55.

The Barbarian defeats Kip Abee with the big boot to the face in 1:23. 1-2-3!

Recap highlights of the Clash were shown throughout this show. They were promoting a replay of the event the upcoming Wednesday at 10:05.

Arn Anderson/Bobby Eaton w/ Michael Hayes vs. Steiner Bros. – I don't think I've ever seen this match but remember their match from Superbrawl II earlier in the year. Really enjoyed this tag match as Arn & Bobby defeated the Steiners in 19:50 when Bobby Eaton came off the top with the Alabama Jam behind the referee’s back onto Rick. A big deal was made of how this move was illegal which was a bit confusing after the discussion and fan vote at the Clash. I guess we will have to wait until next week’s episode for an update on this situation. Steiners got cheated so have reason for a rematch down the line. Anderson & Eaton are 2-0 in September and now the #1 contenders for the World Tag Team Titles.

Interview with the new #1 contenders ends up the show. They talk about the connection between Hayes and Gordy from their Freebird days. "This is the best combination of the best three tag teams of the 80's!"

WCW/NWA Tag Team Champions – Steve Williams & Terry Gordy

1 – Anderson & Eaton (2-0)

2- Barbarian & Butch Reed (1-0)

3- Steiner Bros. (0-1 & lost in 8-man tag)

T3 – Dustin Rhodes & Barry Windham (0-1)

5- Greg Valentine & Dick Slater (0-2, including six-man tag)
