Bruce Prichard's credibility

I thought Conrad was great on Flair's show. Flair's podcast in general was a lot of fun. I thought most of "our kind" liked the guy too.

I can't listen to Bruce for more than two minutes. I understand why some may find him interesting and I'm not discrediting that. I just really don't like hearing the guy talk. So I haven't heard anything recent from Conrad. So long story short, what the hell happened to Conrad? Was he always like this and I just didn't notice before?

I think he adjusts his act depending on the situation. If you listen to an episode of each one of Conrad's three podcasts, you get three different Conrads. 83 Weeks (at least so far) features Serious Conrad. Something to Wrestle features Entertaining Conrad. What Happened When features Raunchy Conrad. So far, I prefer 83 Weeks, but it has only been one episode so far. I really enjoyed that episode, as it was a style and format I wish STW was now. Maybe in time, 83 Weeks will end up like STW, but I don't think so. Conrad and Bruce are good friends, and I don't know that he and Eric will ever get that familiar, but who knows.

If it is, just stories everyone has good stories. In all other things. I take everything with a tanker of salt I am a very, very Cynical person since wrestling is based on the idea they are working us. I view all people from the inside the in the same very Cynical way. I would trust Meltzer Keller et al over Bruce, Cornette et al.

I'd wager he rips on Dave becaus it's the only way he's relevant in 2018. Would he be known as anything other than the guy who was Brother Love if he wasn't using Dave as a means to get himself over with the internet?

I think he'd be just as successful, because the Dave stuff is already old to me, and I've only seen the three Network shows. It's the other stuff - the great stories, the "insider look" into how the WWE was run and Vince's mindset, etc. - that, for me, make the show worthwhile to listen to.I think all of the Dave bashing on the show is a side-effect of Conrad mentioning him every other sentence. "Dave thought this, reported that, gave this match x amount of stars."

Bingo.

You are trying to equivicate what Bruce does with what Dave does. What Bruce does is sell bullshit that he knows is bullshit to "con the marks" or whatever. Dave has his own biases for sure, but they are not on the same level as someone who is clearly making shit up (or is at Hogan levels of making shit up for so long he believes its real). That's all I'm trying to say.

A thread on Bruce's credibility morphs into yet another debate on Dave's. Can't help but think this is why Bruce rips Dave so much.

I'd wager he rips on Dave becaus it's the only way he's relevant in 2018. Would he be known as anything other than the guy who was Brother Love if he wasn't using Dave as a means to get himself over with the internet?

He was in Vince's inner circle and knows where the bodies are buried in the largest wrestling company on Earth. So yes I think he would be relevant without David Meltzer.

Yup. Nailed it.

I mean, I get that Bruce's show isn't for everyone. But some of us can enjoy him for what he offers and cut through the bullshit. It's not all that difficult.

And you're right that he and Dave aren't at all selling the same thing. So it's entirely possible for someone to value both separately - even if there's nothing Bruce does that is even half as annoying as Dave's overuse (abuse?) of the phrase, "ya know." :D

I think the term "credibility" within the wrestling business is a little suspect in general. My guess would be that there are credible sources about wrestling and wrestling personalities. But they are credible about the places they have been and people they have spent time with, not everything.

I enjoy listening to Jim Cornette talk about the territory days and share all of his detailed information on the places he has been. But as much as I agree with his view on modern wrestling, I think he should stick to not being a grumpy old bastard and talk about what he knows. At least most of the time, sometimes he's hilarious when he starts ranting.

Nash seems like a guy who gets the business and understands why decisions are made. But he also seems to know the missteps he made and more than willing to cover his own ass. And he gets real bitter about wrestling not in his wheelhouse getting praise. Also, I wonder if he realizes his time on top in the WWF (his fault or not) was a real low point in the company's history. Yes, he drove ratings way up in WCW along with Hall and Hogan, but he could be a lot more honest with himself on the Dielsel run. All that being said, I find him to be very engaging and knowledgeable so I will watch him talk about wrestling.

It's all going to come down to personal taste in the end and maybe you don't like cutting through Bruce Prichard's BS. I listened to him talk about the Montreal screwjob and I could care less what he has to say about much afterwards. I also have little care for Vince's views on wrestling as they run counter to mine in just about every way. So I probably won't be listening. I don't come down on the side of Meltzer either. A lot of the wrestling he loves doesn't do much for me.

Bumping this.

I've decided that my biggest issue is not with the podcasts themselves. Workers gonna work, which is how wrestling has always been. The bigger issue is with the Twitter army. They are awful. (No particular event prompted this post, just Dave arguing with Pritchard-Russo-Bischoff trolls on Twitter all the time.)

Agreed, but its even more disappointing Dave has taken it up as some kind of marketing effort. I'm sure he knows better and that it makes him a tough follow for many, but this is apparently one one road he'll go down for purely quantitative purposes without regard for how he comes off.

On the topic of podcasts being full of it and "working" people, I am getting suspicious of something involving Conrad Thompson and Vince Russo.

The topic for this past Monday's episode of 83 Weeks was Bash at the Beach 2000, which of course centered around the infamous incident between Hulk Hogan and Vince Russo. Understandably, the majority of the discussion was about Vince Russo. Needless to say, Eric Bischoff did not have much nice to say about Vince Russo, despite Conrad saying that he liked Russo as a person and he was a nice guy. During the podcast, Conrad mentioned several times that he knew Russo would be responding to the show.

The topic for yesterday's "Something Else to Wrestle With" on the WWE Network was...Vince Russo. Like the episode of 83 Weeks, the show was less than flattering, and once again Conrad discussed the fact that he was anticipating a heated reaction by Russo.

Coincidentally (?) late last week, Vince Russo announced he would be appearing at Starrcast on Labor Day weekend, the upcoming Wrestling Podcast convention, which is being held in conjunction with the "All In" event being run by The Elite. Starrcast is being run by Conrad Thompson. Pretty much the minute that Russo announced he was going to be at Starrcast, Cody Rhodes announced that no...he wasn't and that he wasn't welcome there.

Call me paranoid, but this whole thing smells like an attempt by Conrad Thompson to get more publicity for Vince Russo (who after being fired by Podcast One was thankfully starting to fade from any type of "relevance" in the Pro Wrestling business.) I am wondering if Conrad and Vince Russo are working some sort of stupid "swerve" or trying to get publicity for Starrcast. Like suddenly it is going to be announced that Russo is going to be at Starrcast anyhow, despite the fact he was told he isn't welcome. Or even worse Russo is going to appear at All In. (He had reportedly publicly offered to make an appearance at All In and cut a promo on "all the marks.")

If this isn't part of some goofy publicity stunt, then I have to question why all of the sudden Conrad Thompson felt the need to host two of his shows with the topic being about Vince Russo in the space of a week...the same week where he was publicly uninvited to a convention that Conrad is running. Smells fishy to me.

It all goes back to people (fans) feeling like they can be a part of something. They can be part of what feels like a smaller more in-the-know "elite" group if they walk around wearing a Prichard shirt. It makes them feel better than the common fan and gives them something to identify with.

I actually wrote this in another thread before seeing your post (the relevant portion is at the end):

The Vince Russo episode of the Prichard show is easily the weakest one yet. It's shockingly boring. (WWE Network really was doing me a favor by not loading the show last night.) :P

I'll save you all the time and just recap what happened:

- Conrad reads something from Russo's book.

- Prichard responds with, "No, that was J.R.'s idea!"

And I'm not even a Vince Russo hater like so many of you - I see his many flaws - but his biggest attribute was that he had a story for everyone (which I was happy to see Prichard also credited him for) and you felt like you couldn't miss a single show. Contrast that with today where I don't even watch the weekly shows, only the PPVs, and I don't feel like I've missed a thing.

Conrad also kept plugging Russo's Realm Network, which I guess is his podcast or company, and that makes any "strife" between them feel like a work between two carnies. He was harder on Brutus "the fucking Barber" Beefcake and Virgil on previous shows than he was on Russo this week. Hell, he didn't even use his annoying "Bruce, who booked this shit?" catchphrase about any of Russo's WrestleCrap angles.

Yeah I forgot to mention that, good point CS. Conrad was clearly promoting Russo's podcast and Network, he mentioned it a few times in detail. It sure sounded like he was plugging him, which also made me suspicious about the whole thing being some sort of "work."
