My 8 Favorite Matches

This is, obviously, a blatant attempt to copy Loss's great list of favorite matches. I'll add whenever I can but I'd like to only add matches I watch/re-watch. Since I watched so many 80's matches I can start with those. ****+ star matches will make the list, as well as other that I didn't rate as high but still really liked and recommend.

Loss's original list: http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?showtopic=4803

Loss's V. 2.0 list: http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?showtopic=7317

As always feel free to discuss or flame any of my picks/ratings and matches I should check out.

Thanks Loss. I ran a Best Matches poll last year and watched (and kept track of) a metric ton of matches, so I have alot already and am pretty confident in my ratings, but it'll also add any new matches or re-watches. Like my El Dandy/Azteca match seems low, gonna rewatch it again.

- Just rewatched Dory Funk Jr. Vs. Antonio Inoki. Both guys can be acquired tastes with their boring slow old school offense. Funks defedning the NWA World title while his blond little brother Terry looks on. First 45 minutes are slow but solid with both trading wear down moves and submissions, each getting a fall. The last 15 min or so really pick up. Both guys are exhausted but Inoki keeps getting near falls for the title. Definitely overrating this but I always really liked the Funk/Inoki series. ****1/4

- Plan to watch next: Flair/Jumbo (83) and other PWO DVD #3 matches, Dory/Inoki (69), Sting/Flair (93), Misawa/Akiyama (00)..

- Added some 1981 matches. Feel free to discuss my crazy picks. Never got into the RWTL 81 finals like others, will rewatch it again. And am planning on watching the Flair/Jumbo 81-83 trilogy again.

- Watched Sting Vs. Flair (WCW 8/21/93). Heard it was great but didn't live up to my expectations. Both were babyfaces but Flair played the heelish part. Most likely won't make my WCW Top 100 in the Smarkchoice poll, I'd put the Clash 88 (Lock) and the Bash 90 (Maybe) ahead of it. Still for a TV match it went 40+ minutes and the finish was good so can't complain. ***1/2

- Added some 1992 matches.

- Watched a bunch of WCW matches. Nothing really stood out except for Pillman/Flair (90) and Armstrong/Benoit (93).

- Watched Bryan Danielson Vs. Tyler Black (ROH TV - 7/25/09). Some guy wrote a review at 411mania and gave it 5 stars and the comments left by people were comparing it to Steamboat/Savage and the HBK/Undertaker match this year, so I was HYPED to see it. I saw it and I dunno, I don't get the greatness. I'm a big fan or ROH matches and usually overrate the big matches but not this one. OK match, some cool spots and exciting finish, this was the 3rd meeting and there's never been a conclusive winner. ***1/2

1981

#2. Pat Patterson Vs. Sgt. Slaughter (WWF - 4/21/81) - [****1/4]

05/04/81 if it's the one I'm thinking of.

John

If it's the Alley Fight it's 5/4/1981. Or it could be 4/6/1981 which is the forgotten but still very good regular singles match between the two that set up the Alley Fight.

- Added some 1982 matches.

- Yes I did mean the Alley fight, thank you for the date correction!

- Watched Bryan Danielson Vs. Takeshi Morishima (ROH Final Battle - No-DQ - 12/27/08) and it as pretty great. It's a No-DQ finish to their 2 year feud. Danielson bleeds alot and early but won't be denied but Morishima is a big dude to put away. ****1/4

** NOTE TO MODS **

If all these pictures are a bog to the forums please let me know and I'll take them down.

************************************************************************

I haven't been updating this but I have been busy watching matches. In fact I watched 14 billion WCW matches last couple of months for a Best Matches of WCW poll I'm was participating in. For those interested I'll post a link to the results when they come out, but in the meantime here's my ballot:

Floyd's Top 100 WCW Matches of All time!

NOTE: For this poll, only matches from November 2, 1988 to March 26, 2001 are eligible.

Keeping track also here:

#100. Diamond Dallas Page Vs. Randy Savage

Halloween Havoc (Las Vegas Death Match - 10/26/97)

And the DDP/Savage trilogy comes to it's conclusion. And much like in the original Star Wars trilogy, although the finale wasn't the best one, it had lots of plunder.

#99. Jushin Liger & Brian Pillman Vs. Chris Benoit & Beef Wellington

Clash of the Champions XIX (6/16/92)

Bill Watts removal of the mats outside didn't deter these guys. Team Canada takes on the USA/Japan alliance in the WCW World tag tournament.

#98. The Great Muta Vs. Arn Anderson

Power Hour (1/2/90)

Six month champ and practically undefeated Muta puts his T.V. title on the line against the returning Double A. He also has to contend with the evil Dragon Master and Buzz Sawyer.

#97. Chris Benoit Vs. Diamond Dallas Page

Superbrawl VIII (2/22/98)

Chris Benoit defends his U.S. title against the overachiever DDP. Is DDP in Benoit's league? If DDP can pull off the victory it'll be time for a Self High Five!

#96. Ric Flair Vs. Bret Hart

Souled Out (1/24/98)

Bret's first major opponent in WCW was his old nemesis Ric Flair. I think this is an underrated, but good, back and forth match. Sadly this would be the end of Bret's dream matches as he became just another guy in the N.W.O. regime.

#95. Chris Benoit Vs. Eddy Guerrero

WCW Nitro (11/6/95)

These two have been having great matches on TV the past couple of weeks. On this Nitro the visiting Japanese team (Liger, Saito, Chono, etc..) are watching on. So they kick it up a notch even further, killing each other in a short but intense match.

#94. Billy Kidman Vs. Rey Misterio Jr. Vs. Juventud Guerrera

Starrcade (12/27/98)

Great 3-way match for Billy Kidman's Cruserwieght title. Mysterio is Kidman's buddy, but is also on assignment to get the belt for the L.W.O. so I dunno what will happen.

#93. Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko Vs. Chris Jericho & Eddy Guerrero

Thunder (1/29/98)

Jericho and Guerrero were at their peak of heel-ishness here, it's sad their tag team wasn't continued. Great TV tag match from the Nitro 4.

#92. The Midnight Express Vs. Tommy Rich & Ricky Morton

Halloween Havoc (10/27/90)

Robert Gibson's knee got jacked by the Freebirds, so Tommy Rich takes his place. The Express were always awesome but really stood out in 1990. This was The Midnight Express's swan song.

#91. Billy Kidman Vs. Rey Misterio Jr. Vs. Juventud Guerrera Vs. Psicosis

Souled Out (1/17/99)

Think I may have had this too low. But my ballots already in! A great 4-way match for the Crusierweight title. The Latino World Order has three members in, will they work together to get Kidman's belt?

#90. Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko Vs. Raven & Perry Saturn

#89. Steve Williams & Terry Gordy Vs. Barry Windham & Dustin Rhodes

Saturday Night (10/3/92)

Gordy & Williams defend the titles. Dustin & Windham are underdogs but might pull off an upset with Windham's experience and Dustin's enthusiasm. Great 30 min. match on a Saturday night!

#88. Doom Vs. The Rock & Roll Express

Great American Bash (7/7/90)

#87. Arn Anderson & Larry Zbyszko Vs. Ricky Steamboat & Dustin Rhodes

Clash of the Champions XVII (11/19/91)

The beginning of the Dangerous Alliance. It was scheduled to be Dustin Rhodes & Barry Windham going for the WCW tag titles, but a pre-match ambush and Windham got his hand crunched in a car door. Dustin found a suitable replacement in the returning Ricky Steamboat! The Enforcers are caught off guard but still are the dirtiest players in WCW. This match is beloved by alot of people and will do good in this poll, so despite my low placing I recommend it!

#86. Kaz Hayashi & Jimmy Yang Vs. Jamie Knoble & Evan Karagias

#85. Steven Regal Vs. Fit Finlay

#84. Juventud Guerrera Vs. Billy Kidman

World War III (11/22/98)

Juvy defends the WCW Crusierweight title, my favorite of their long term feud. Crazy spots as usual including both guys using the triple rings in unique situations.

*************************************************************************

#83. Chris Benoit Vs. Jushin Liger

Starrcade (12/27/95)

A big disappointment to their New Japan fans but I thought it was a solid match, especially for WCW at the time. The New Japan Vs. WCW Starcade was great showcasing different styles and new talent to the Hogan-dominated WCW.

#82. Big Van Vader Vs. Ron Simmons

Any thoughts? Is Brian Alverez right when he said WCW TV Sucked in the early 90's?

Oh geez. When did he say this and in what context?

I seem to remember him saying something about how great WWE was the first 6 months of 2007 and how nothing compared to it for in ring top-to-bottom TV shows. Then someone mentioned All Japan TV and the Dangerous Allience era and he said they weren't anywhere as good as 2007. I think he just remembers the Wrestlecrap moments instead of the good matches/angles. Could be wrong so please don't hate on Alverez going by my hazy memory! Can't remember if it was on the F4W board or the Bryan and Vinny Show, I'll look around.

That Rich/Morton vs. Midnights match is in my top twenty - and I know for a fact at least one person rated it even higher than I did.

You have a much more cruiser heavy match than I had by the looks of things, though I must say that the Starrcade Triple Threat and Juvy/Kidman from WWIII were some of my favorite spotathon matches WCW ever ran even if I didn't vote for either of them.

I don't recall it getting pimped so it's cool the hear the MX match will get some high votes! Kind of forgotten with the other Express matches in 1990 but it was really fun. Yeah alot of the late 90's spotfests would blur together but I wanted to pick my favorite ones. There was about 125,000 Kidman Vs. Juvy matches to comb through alone.

#79. Diamond Dallas Page Vs. Sting

Nitro (4/26/99)

DDP stunned the world but not only winning the WCW World title but turning into a douchebag. The day after his big win it's Sting who gets a title shot. Better than anyone expected and was a surprise match to open up Nitro.

#78. Chris Jericho Vs. Raven

Halloween Havoc (10/25/98)

#77. Barry Windham Vs. Steven Regal

#76. Vader Vs. Sting

Starcade (12/28/92)

It's the King of Cable Finals! This is Stings chance for avenging his World title loss to Vader. Sting discovers he can't match power with the big guy so comes up with a new strategy. Probably have this too low but never got into it as their other matches. More Sting/Vader to come.

#75. Dean Malenko Vs. Rey Misterio Jr.

Great American Bash (6/16/96)

This was Mysterio's debut. But that stupid Malenko ruins the party by completely grounding the luchadore! Still whenever Mysterio finds some daylight he shows the awesome aerial moves that'll soon make him a WCW superstah.

#74. Sting Vs. Cactus Jack

Worldwide (Submit or Surrender Match - 11/9/91)

That Cactus Jack was one weird dude. Hired by Luger as a bounty hunter, he vows to get Sting out of WCW, even if it means destroying himself too. This is a no-DQ, anything goes match. Only way to win is to surrender. I like the future Beach Blast match alot more, but this was awesome too, especially for its time.

#73. Randy Savage Vs. Diamond Dallas Page

The Great American Bash (Falls Count Anywhere - 6/15/97)

Hogan had the night off so these guys main-evented the Bash. This rematch was a Falls Count Anywhere affair and they brawled all over the arena. DDP had busted up ribs but wouldn't stay down.

*************************************************************************

#72. Goldberg Vs. Sting

Nitro (9/14/98)

Hmmmmmmmm... To be honest I'm not sure why this match is here or so high. All well what's done is done! It was a good TV match to a super hot crowd with Golberg defending the WCW World title. His title reign was always in the shadow of the Hulkster but he managed to squeeze in some good defenses along the way.

#71. Steven Regal Vs. Larry Zbyszko

Saturday Night (5/28/94)

Lord Regal was besmirched and embarrassed in his Slamboree legends match against Zbysko. So this is the return match, this time for Regal's TV title. For a couple of years Regal was WCW's MVP for TV matches. Here he tries to turn Zbysko into a pretzel.

I would have rated Goldberg v. Sting without the horrible, horrible finish.

Page v. Savage is a great feud with no match that was complete. If you take the components of each and put them together you'd have a contender for best match in WCW history, but individually the flaws of each are pretty severe. Still I voted for the Havoc match myself, though it has an unforgiveably awful finish.

King of Cable final is in my top ten and I think it is the best of the Sting v. Vader matches.

I can't stand the Malenko v. Rey series and think that GAB match is pretty awful though I do expect it to do reasonably well.

Didn't watch Raven v. Jericho,but I probably should have.

I thought for sure I was the only person who would rate that Windham v. Regal match.

Really like your list and the pics here FLoyd. It's obvious you watched a lot of matches for the poll. 10 of your matches are already on my list.

And if that Malenko vs Rey match is pretty awful than I want the worse, most ridculously stupid horrendous matches ever. Loved that match and it easily made my list.

What did you like about it?

Here are my reviews of the two highly touted Rey v. Dean matches:

Dean Malenko vs. Rey Misterio Jr. - Great American Bash 6/16/96

What a stupid way to work a match. Here you have a guy making his WCW debut, known as the a high flyer of all high flyers and not only do they have him grounded for all but three minutes of the match but they have him grounded with arm work of all things. I could buy attacking the knees and it probably would have made sense building to a sympathy comeback before Dean went over, but man alive working the arm and keeping Rey grounded in his debut is embarrassingly idiotic and a pretty good indication of how overrated Malenko is. Even worse they didn't give Rey much of anything as far as an opening flurry that established him as spectacular, so the crowd was dead for big parts of the Malenko control segment. Three minute explosion by Rey at the end came out of nowhere and was not enough to save this. I really can't imagine anyone watching this next to the other well known Cruiser matches and thinking it was anything special. It's not even as good as deeply flawed stuff like Kidman v. Juvy at WWIII 98. Hell it's not even good at all.

Rey Misterio Jr. vs. Dean Malenko - Halloween Havoc 10/27/96

This match is worked smarter and is more exciting than the GAB match, but it still leaves a lot to be desired. I think the tactical decision to let Rey rattle off some big offense early was really a saving grace of sorts as it kept the crowd involved in this when Malenko went to the inevitable "ground Rey" segment. This version was much less focused than the GAB match, but that's not really a complaint since the GAB match was mostly senseless, dead end, armwork. I also thought they were smart to give the Rey comeback and nearfall segment more time than they did in the GAB match. The reversals in some of this were a bit too cute for me, but Rey's twisting Asai moonsault is still a great spot and they only got really ridiculous once when they botched the spot off the safety rail. This isn't as mechanically sound as the GAB match and it might not even be better, but it's smarter for what that's worth. Finishing powerbomb spot is pretty fun too, but honestly this isn't even close to something I would consider for my ballot.

#70. Rey Misterio Jr. & Billy Kidman Vs. Kid Romeo & Elix Skipper

Greed (3/18/01)

"Greed" was the aptly named last PPV of the WCW era. It's sad cause some new talent was making some noise at the end such as AJ Styles, Christoper Daniels and Mike Modest. In the last hurray WCW also had a Crusierweight Tag Division and this was the finals to crown the first champs.

#69. Vader Vs. Sting

Fall Brawl (9/18/94)

Their feud is two years past it's prime and it's Hogan and Flair battling at the top now. But it's still Vader Vs. Sting and they give it all in this encounter which goes 30 min. Vader has the size but is at a disadvantage having just wrestling the Big Bossman in a tough brawl. There's a long stretch where both guys are blown up and can't wrestle but the rest is gold, especially the ending which is mega exciting.

#68. Rey Misterio Jr. Vs. Juventud Guerrera Vs. Psicosis Vs. Blitzkreig

Nitro (4/19/99)

#67. Vader & Steve Austin Vs. Ric Flair & Arn Anderson

Saturday Night (11/13/93)

This was supposed to be Flair & Sid Vicious but Sid got ambushed on the way to the ring. Double A took his place in this dream match that went 30 minutes. Seems Flair and Vader aren't done yet...

#66. Chris Benoit Vs. Eddy Guerrero

#65. Barry Windham vs. 2 Cold Scorpio

Clash of the Champions XXIII (6/16/93)

#64. The 1989 Wargames

The Great American Bash (7/23/89)

It's The Road Warriors, Midnight Express and Dr Death Steve Williams Vs. The Freebirds and Samoan Swat Team. At the "Massacre in Marrietta" the Freebirds and SST locked the Road Warriors in the cage and destroyed Hawk while Animal was handcuffed and unable to help. And don't forget the Freebirds cost the Midnight Express the title by cheating. Now it's time for revenge! Double Cage where the match can't be stopped until the end. Fun stuff.

#63. Barry Windham & Dustin Rhodes Vs. Ricky Steamboat & Shane Douglas

Clash of the Champions XXI (11/18/92)

Windham & Dustin are defending the tag titles. Dustin's good but he's too nice a wrestler so Windham's trying to teach him to play dirty.

#62. Ric Flair vs. Sting

The Great American Bash (7/7/90)

Sting returns from a near career-ending knee injury to get his revenge against Flair and the Horsemen. Flair's defending the title and a bunch of fan favorites are surrounding the ring to prevent shenanigans. It's 1 on 1 for the World title, is Sting the man of the 90's or Flair?

#61. Randy Savage Vs. Diamond Dallas Page

Spring Stampede (NO-DQ - 4/6/97)

DDP turned down the NWO so Randy Savage was sent as a hit man. He also mocked DDP's wife Kimberly for her pictures in Playboy intensifying the feud even further. Great match to their feud that went all over the place.

Rey Vs. Malenko could definitely be an acquired taste. Malenko shtick was always grounding the high flyers, slowing the match which could be boring.

I always liked the Bash match cause Rey was new and you didn't know what he'd do. They when he busted out those few highspots everyone (crowd, annoncers, Floyd) flipped their lid.

The only other Rey/Malenko match I liked was the outdoor Nitro where Ray won the title. Mostly cause it was shorter, the Malenko slowdown was during the commercial break and the ring was surrounded by senior citizens in wheelchairs (not behind a barrier but ringside!) and Rey still kept doing highspots to the outside. Plus one old guy kept marking out, a forebearer perhaps to me if I make it to that age.

Wow you rated the entire DDP v. Savage feud. That makes me feel better in a way about only voting for Havoc as their were elements of each I liked.

My big beef with that Vader v. Sting match is that it just goes on too long. The finish to it is really great, but it comes across like a "Greatest Hits Collection" of their previous matches after a while.

I love that Greed tag and it made my ballot, albeit a bit lower than where you had it. It wasn't my highest rated tag match from that show though :)

I remember loving that Nitro match at the time, but I haven't seen it in years.

There are very few wrestlers I have a lower opinion of coming out of this poll than I had coming in. Malenko is one of those few. I just don't think he's a very smart wrestler and he seems to get less out of his talent and his opponents talents than any other "good" wrestler I can think of.

Having said that a lot of the stuff on my ballot will probably strike people as far more bizarre than this so....
