Holy crap this is going to be awesome.

175 is ALOT but I publicly vow here in front of the witnesses at prowrestlingonly to somehow get my ballot in.

Was waiting to see how many early decade Choshu/Fujinami matches would make it, I count 5! Kewl. I heard how good their series was but only saw 1 match and didn't want to go through the 1983 TV set and get a bunch of disks just for their series.

So is the 4/19/84 Gauntlet considered one match? If I remember the entire thing was well over an hour, kickass the whole thing was put on. Also great the 5/1/86 Gauntlet match is on as I thought it was really fun and sets up Fujinami/Maede.

Was hoping for the Inoki/Brody (4/18/85) and 86 hour match to make it, but that's cool.

Also noticed neither Inoki Vs. Fujinami matches are in. The Hour match would've place high for me.

Matches I never heard of but look AWESOME:

Tatsumi Fujinami vs. Steve Keirn (2/3 Falls) (2/1/80)

Hiro Hase vs. Kuniaki Kobayashi (12/27/87)

Tatsumi Fujinami, Shinya Hashimoto & Masa Chono vs. Tracy Smothers, Steve Armstrong & George Takano (11/11/88)

Tatsumi Fujinami vs. Jerry Lawler (3/16/89)

Jushin Liger vs. Black Tiger (European Rounds) (7/12/89)

Also looking forward to Fujinami Vs. Hogan!

Set looks incredible. So much stuff I never even knew existed. And the fact there's 3 Chosu/Fujiwara matches on it that I haven't seen means I'd probably pay the $45 dollars for discs with those matches alone.

I also echo Floyd's sentiments on Fujinami/Keirn from 2/1/80. And ditto that for about 100 other matches.

Riki Choshu vs Yoshiaki Fujiwara is either 06/09/87 in Osaka (Choshu pins him in 12:28) or 06/29/87 st Korakuen (Fujiwara is COR at 8:14)

Riki Choshu & Strong Machine & Kuniaki Kobayashi vs Yoshiaki Fujiwara & Nobuhiko Takada & Osamu Kido is 06/12/87 at Sumo Hall.

Kengo Kimura vs Masa Saito was taped 06/10/87. It aired later in the month.

Riki Choshu vs. Yoshiaki Fujiwara (12/28/87)

That would be off. It may have been one of the earlier two I gave the dates for. Check the times and finishes and buildings.

If it's not one of those two, then it's probably from 1988 or early 1989 before Fujiwara jumped.

My guess is that they are both from June 1987.

The set is modified. We had three matches listed twice. Thanks to John for making us check on those.

If you double counted and have less than 175, toss the Dusty vs Backlund into one of the early slots. Best Dusty Match Ever, and Bob is freaking brillant. I'm pretty stunned it's not in there, especially since the Choshu vs Backlund is. :)

BTW - I haven't seen them, but were the first two Fujinami vs Choshu matches that bad to not make the list? Given 15+ Tiger Mask matches on there, and the lack of love that there seemed to be for Tiger, I thought some of that first run Riki-Fujinami stuff might get to a wider audience than those who have Dan's season sets (which I keep meaning to get).

The first two weren't bad, but they mostly introduced patterns that would be taken to greater heights in the '83 matches. We decided that we liked the five '83 matches so much that we had to include the whole lot, and the '82 matches (both nominated) were victims of that decision.

You should get the '82 and '83 season sets, though. It's fun to watch the whole thing unfold week by week.

Overall, I'd say Choshu-Fujinami is well-represented.

Tiger Mask fared so well only because they brought in a lot of interesting people to wrestle him.

I also 2nd the Dusty/Backlund match. Fun dream matchup with Dusty kinda playing the heel and Backlund getting busted open trying to retain the title.

I also like the 3 gauntlet match for the Jr. title with Cobra/Dynamite and Davey. Maybe each match was pretty short but I liked the whole thing as one big match.

I was looking back at my Top 100 80's list I made about a year ago and was surprised the 8/8/88 Inoki/Fujinami match was 2nd overall for NJ.

My old list for people to look at and chuckle at: http://floydscabana.blogspot.com/2008/07/t...hes-of-80s.html

By the way once again I'm not complaining! The comp looks awesome and I know the final matchlist is already set. I know after watching hundreds of hours the last thing you guys want to hear is bitching about matches being left off. :P

I'm kind of surprised that only 2 of the matches form the original Top of the Super Juniors, and nothing from the 1984 WWE Jr. Title Tourney.

John

No one liked the matches from the '84 tourney. I went in expecting to nominate some and just couldn't find any that felt deserving. TOSJ was better but suffered from the fact that we had better versions of a lot of the match-ups. I actively disliked the final, and the Takada-Kosh wasn't nearly as good as the three we nominated. The Owen shit tended to be badly clipped.

As for the bias talk, no shit. It's three guys culling through hundreds of hours of footage. But we all have different biases, and actually, we bent over backwards to include junior shit that we didn't love (like the last two DK/Tiger Mask matches.) If we didn't go at it with bias, it would be boring as shit.

Just to be clear, and I know it wasn't what you intended, but I wasn't the one tossing "bias". :)

I am putting 8/8/88 in purgatory. No more 8/8 talk until the errata set. It was boring. MOve on.

To be clear, we nominated a ton of matches. We had to make cuts. Just because a match doesn't appear doesn't mean we didn't like it. Alot of the matches above were nominated. However, we think the ones on the set are better.

Dusty-Backlund was nominated. I was the lone Backlund rep on the panel and the sole reason there is any Backlund on this thing. Backlund-Hogan was left off because that match will be represented on WWF. I thought Hansen-Backlund was good enough to go on and I loved Backlund-Choshu rolling around on the mat... more then the low-level endorsement I gave Backlund-Dusty.

We enjoyed the 1982 Choshu-Fujinami matches but the match-up appears 7 times in total. Those were the weakest of the two.

We put 4 DK-TM matches on there. I think that is a pretty damn good representation of what the feud is about. I liked the 10/21 TM-Kobayashi match. It didn't have enough support to make it on and I wasn't going to use a personal pick on it when we already had the matchup twice.

Twenty-eight Fujiwara matches? I wonder who influenced that many matches.

I am in no way, shape or form part of the Fujiwara is the Best camp. On this set alone, I like Fujinami, Choshu, Murdoch and Liger /Yamada better. I think Jumbo is a better wrestler. However, the majority of those Fujiwara matches are pretty fucking great. Maybe 5 or 6 are ones I wasn't crazy about.

Personally, I'm glad there's a bunch of Fujiwara on there. I'm not really a shoot-style kinda guy (although Fujiwara's actually my favourite shoot-type ever, probably... either him or Han), so I'm looking forward to seeing a chunk of his pro-style (or "more" pro-style that shoot-style :)) stuff. I know there's a lot of people that pimp him really heavily already, so it should be interesting to see what other people - people that haven't seen a whole Hell of a lot, like myself - think of him by the time they've worked through the set. I wouldn't be surprised if I came away loving him, though (really enjoy him already anyway). I already mentioned the 6/9/87 match opposite Chosu, which is probably gonna be up in or around my top 5, so if the other stuff clicks with me like that, then I'll no doubt be sold...

Quick question, Will: are you planning on ever comping Liger at any point?

Set looks great, although some bias exists in plain sight, and there are some very key juniors matches absent involving Mask/Kid/Kobayashi.

You know, before the Memphis set, there was a lot of Lawler pimping going on much like the Fujiwara stuff now. I kinda thought, eh, don't see what's so great about Lawler. Then my ballot had him in like my top 8 or 9 matches.

The beauty of these sets is the re-evaluation that goes on regarding "best ever" talk.

Replace Fujiwara with Fujinami and the Lawler comparison is more accurate. Fujinami was the king of the 80s in New Japan.

I wasn't involved with putting this set together, but a quick look through list and still don't see the numbers being that odd. I can't see how you'd look at this and make the complaint your making.

Fujiwara, Maeda, and Takada all have 23 matches in 86,87 when they were part of hot big UWF angle. Fujiwara also shows up three times in 83 as third guy on a team facing Choshu's Army.

Tiger Mask who only wrestled in New Japan for three years is in a whopping 17 matches with the majority of them being singles matches.

Tiger Jeet Singh who still a major player in New Japan for first three years in the 80s and doesn't have a single match on the set.
