Topics I've Started

The Woodpile (Wrestling's Rotten Tomatoes)

28 September 2017 - 11:38 AM

Branching off from the Dave Meltzer thread here, I'd like to entertain the idea of gathering a "critical consensus" for star ratings. There are plenty of voices beyond Big Dave on the web, but I'm not sure there are enough who provide consistent reviews to make this feasible.

Use this thread to play around with the concept and let's gather some influential names who would be worthy of inclusion.

Jerry Lawler vs. Kimala (Mid South Coliseum 6/7/82, No DQ)

26 September 2017 - 10:32 AM

Jerry Lawler vs. Kimala

No Disqualification Match

June 7 1982 Memphis, TN

I believe this is the correct date but I could be wrong. This showed up on Rick Crane's "Jerry Lawler: Revamped and Expanded" 4 disc set. We get about 8 minutes of action and oh boy is it wild and woolly. These two had a match a few weeks prior that ended in the DQ so with the stip they can go balls out. Lawler makes his superman comeback pretty early in the game, but he can't keep the beast down long enough to win inside the ring, so the fight spills to the floor where they find lots of plunder. The finish is a callback to the Lawler-Funk match, with Jerry slowly becoming the king of the No DQ dogfight.

Highly enjoyable.

Gimmick Match of the Month: The Lumberjack Match (September 2017)

12 September 2017 - 01:41 PM

I'm starting a new monthly thread series here on PWO where every month we will focus on a different gimmick match. Discuss your favorite matches involving the gimmick, how the stipulation has evolved over time, pros/cons, positives and negatives and try to predict where they will stand in the future.

This month's featured Gimmick Match will be the Lumberjack Match.

from Wikipedia:

A lumberjack match is a standard match with the exception that the ring is surrounded by a group of wrestlers not directly involved in it. These wrestlers, known collectively as lumberjacks (female wrestlers serving in this manner are sometimes called lumberjills) are there to prevent the wrestlers in the match from getting out of the ring. The groups of lumberjacks are typically split up into groups of faces and heels who occupy opposing sides around the ring. Usually, the "opposing" lumberjacks (that is, face lumberjacks if the wrestler is a heel, and vice versa) swarm the wrestlers if they leave the ring and force them back in it. Occasional interference from the lumberjacks is not uncommon, or is an all-out brawl on the outside involving most of the lumberjacks. Early lumberjack matches even featured the lumberjacks wearing stereotypical lumberjack clothing in keeping with the lumberjack theme, though this is generally no longer done. A common theme is for the lumberjacks to consist entirely of heel wrestlers to stack the odds against the face competitor.

Variations of this match include the "Canadian" lumberjack match, in which the lumberjacks are equipped with leather straps, the "Extreme" lumberjack match, competed under Extreme Rules, and TNA's "Fan's Revenge" lumberjack match, during which fans equipped with straps act as lumberjacks and are encouraged to whip wrestlers.

What do you think of the dreaded Lumberjack Match?

DVDVR Best Matches of the 1980's (So Far)

08 August 2017 - 02:31 PM

This is something I've been thinking about while reading through this classic old thread. For years, Jeff Bowdren's list of 80's matches was the defining list among tape traders. Well, we've come a long way baby together over the past decade. Throughout the DVDVR Best of the 80's project, we've been able to formulate a consensus on this material. Even as more and more footage becomes available, I still believe we well on our way to coming up with the definitive "Best Matches of the 1980's" at this point.

With the Wrestling Matches Hall of Fame starting up, it seems like perfect timing to get everyone's feedback on the 1980's results.

With nominations and voting closed for a good number of sets, I thought it would be interesting to look back at the "Top 20" matches from all the sets. Obviously, results aren't in for Puerto Rico and Portland and we may not see any new sets moving forward. I went ahead and made some predictions (okay, okay, they're just personal picks). Anyway, here are the #1 and #2 winners from each promotion in chronological order.

First place winners are in red. Second place winners in blue.
