  1. So would as I but the pavilion never drew 10k for any company from wwf to the awa. If I was in charge I would look at florida or Texas for venues
  2. I can't remember but did the ft worth shows exist in its own world like it did in later years? For example ft worth had a world class tv title. For all intents and purposes did not exist at the Sportarium.
  3. This practice was still in use into the late 1960s.
  4. Just throwing it out their but from what I recall Dave started focusing more on MMA such as late 90s and early 2000 and wasn't as focused on the totality of the topics of late.
  5. I have some tapes of their shows, probably 1990. Ox Baker and the nightstalker are featured. They had some other chicago indy guys too. They were based in Iowa. Rocky had a run in the gulas territory when they were on its last legs. Here is some more info on the group. http://www.infinitecore.ca/superstar/index.php?a=prnt&code=02&f=8&t=28877&page=1
  6. JYD also was the #2 face in the WWF for 18-24 months. The summer of 1986 he putters out till January 1987. He is put into upper midcard and transitions to the program with Harley Race. Like the previous summer he is phased down and out for the remainder of the year. Starting in 1988 he has a match against Butch Reed where he does the job. He then spends most of 1988 unnoticeable till he is released by the WWF.
  7. I wonder if they have him work slower ala classical Anderson style he would be better fit?
  8. Is their any insight into how the payoffs in USA/Continental were compared to Memphis?
  9. A couple of things that stand out about Ray is that he was one of the few non wwf guys whose name would be mentioned in the 1980s. So if monsoon thought enough him and wasnt edited out in post production it says a lot. He was still thought high enough by the AWA that they thought by tossing him on misc shows he could pop a gate. That all being said, the fact he never worked out and let his body deteriorated to where he resembled a middle aged appliance repairman is really hard to ignore and separate even in light of all the greats vouching for him.
  10. I suspect that the de-push was a combination of two things. The first being that both guys were inexperienced. They both needed to be led hence why the need for veteran prescence. I am surprised that bob Orton wasn't brought in for a similar role to Valentine. Second is that neither guy fits the image of a Watts worker. Watts on his own favored using more bruiser and rugged guys over matinee idol looking dudes.
  11. I hope that once Brian settles in he will also be able to be the bridge that allows the show to evolve by being able to introduce contemporary wrestling topics.
  12. 150 was rate. Rather simple payout system, 3 jobs a taping. WCW non contract or nightly guarantee was 150 in the next years. If you dive into the observers at that time you will find blurbs about guys complaining about how after expenses they could make more with a regular job.
  13. About SuperClash, it would not have been unusual for a PPV to be held on a weeknight at that time. ChiTown Rumble was on a weeknight a few months later. It probably had more to do with ensuring they could get TV taped and distributed for the weekend. I lived in Waukegan,Illinois then. For point of reference it is an hour north of Chicago/hour south of Milwaukee. Our cable system at that time didn't carry the AWA syndicated show. I am not even sure they had a show in Chicago. The AWA in of itself had pretty much disappeared from Chicago for a couple of years going into this show. So we had to rely on the World Class show or the Milwaukee AWA show to follow the build up as ESPN was erratic.
  14. I really enjoyed the show. It was a great retrospective of how great Nick really was. I recommend that those who haven't seen them search out Bockwinkel's post retirement matches against Dory and Robinson. They aren't much to really write home about, particularly the Robinson match. But it's amazing how Nick was still able to be so smooth after years of inactivity. I think if the desire was there, Nick could have still gone until the mid 90s at a very high level.
  15. When he made it to WCW he had only been in the business a few years. I would say less than 5 years. His prior experience was for the part time PWA. He wasn't ready for his role. WCW had neither the brain power to develop and nurture him. Rather they were more concerned with having their own Tatanka. They stuck Norris in the ring with Titan. Then have work the bar shows for additional side work in the proto power plant system.
