  1. Here is a Q&A from the Hall of Fame Weekend I hosted with Dave, Wade Keller and Steve Johnson & Greg Oliver (SLAM! Wrestling). Only missing the first few minutes. Great discussion, interesting points of view. Mostly the Dave and Wade show, but Steve and Greg make excellent points and give a different perspective. https://youtu.be/upvgyzOhU4k
  2. What a pleasant surprise! Visit here for the first time in a few weeks and see a theard not only about my area of the world, but mentioning me and places I announce at (Midnight Guthrie). I'm 99% sure I know who you are, Thomas - you're good people! You're right - lots of great shows across Midwest in June and July. Real neat cards this summer. I'll be at Wrestlepalooza Friday night in Des Moines, just as a fan. Really excellent crop of wrestlers lined up - hope some of the sight lines are improved. Talking to Cannon, I believe overall visibility will be better, which should really help any mat wrestling and pins/submissions. Some names I even haven't seen live, so that's exciting. I unfortunately won't be announcing at IPW in Des Moines Saturday night. I was elected as a delegate to the State Democratic Convention, which is happening at the same time across the street at Hy-Vee Hall. The FCA Ladder Royal is lots of fun, a hell of a spectacle live. Here's last year's - only a hard cam shot, which does not compare at all for this vs. live experience. It is a gimmick match perfectly built for a smaller Indy show in a wide open venue. https://youtu.be/M2bkplKU5ZQ I will be at the Hall-of-Fame festivities in July - should be the best wrestling weekend of the year! - and announcing all 12 one-hour shows over 4 days of the Madison County Fair in Winterset. IPW has quite a few fair shows all over the state this summer. Some middle-western Nebraska shows, too. All the nonsense in Omaha is just never-ending and endlessly silly.
  3. One factor I haven't seen brought up hardly at all in the discussions about the divas matches, booking, Diva Revolution, etc. is the TV show Total Divas. The Bellas are by far the stars of the show, and as long as E! Network continues re-upping the show season after season, the Bellas spot on the main roster is certainly solidified beyond political connections. Nattie & Eva Marie are also huge parts of the show. Many of us may not watch it on a regular basis, but my wife loves the show and she could give a damn less about watching wrestling on TV in the 13 years we've been together. Because of that show, she now actually looks forward to & attended a live WWE event awith me, as well as voluntarily watched Summerslam. She's up in arms that "Trinity" AKA Naomi isn't getting more use because she was so likable on the first few season of the Total Divas. She doesn't know any of the newer NXT divas at all.

  5. Haven't had a chance to watch whole show yet, but thoughts on what I've seen. MITB - I really enjoyed this. I actually think it may be one of my fav MITBs, if not outright No. 1. From a psychology standpoint of "get up the ladder and get the belt", this is may be one of the smartest MITBs they've ever put together. I loved that Kofi immediately took a ladder and started climbing when the other 6 brawled at the bell, followed by everyone trying to win as quick as possible. I can't stand it when it takes 5-10 mins before any attempt is made to climb and this was the total opposite. Think about it - this match is infinitely more dangerous to your future health & earnings potential...knowing that, why wouldn't you try to climb/win as quick as possible. I really thought this version of MITB was laid out substantially different than most - less about crazy spots that limit your chances and more about guys trying to land proven moves to advance his position. Even the crazy spots that did happen were done in a logical way to advance Wrestler X trying to climb. I had actually predicted either Roman or Kofi winning, so I totally bought into Kofi almost winning when New Day came out. Sheamus winning was a big surprise, and I don't really understand a Wyatt vs Reigns feud - pulls Reigns away from his natural rivalry with Rollins. They continue down this track and they're giving Reigns the Luger 88-89 treatment in regards to the championship. Owens vs Cena - This was excellent and I thought it was much better than their first bout. I thought the match itself was laid out much more logically than their previous battle. In two WWE matches, Owens is already on the tier just below Brock, but sharing a platform with Cena/Rollins/Wyatt and positioned as a bigger threat than anyone else on the roster. He's exploded to the point I don't understand how they logically have him lose the belt to Balor in Japan. Ryback vs Big Show - Fun while it lasted, greatly enjoyed Ryback's big man transition to the cross armbreaker (thought he was going for a jacked up La Magistral at first). But man, that ending was a buzzkill. Oh, and Vince's dancing is always outstanding to watch.
  6. Posting my thoughts before reading the rest of thread so I can jot my initial reactions down. I actually preferred Rollins/Ambrose to Cena/Owens. Owens simply couldn't have had a better WWE PPV debut. I love it because I know promoters that have crapped on Owens in the past because "he's pudgy" "he's out there wearing gym shorts" "he's a spot machine that doesn't have a WWE look at all"....and this makes them all look like the morons they are. But I love the Rollins/Ambrose series and this was another exciting chapter. Can't wait to see them in a rematch, and I typically despise the "5 rematches in 3 weeks" WWE formula. May go down as one of my favorite ref bumps ever, props to the ref. And I think the post match served to help cement Ambrose on a higher tier than a couple weeks ago. He's one of the few things this horrible crowd went apeshit for all night. Cena vs Owens, while something I think the standard WWE viewer will see as this historic epic, is a match I think the excitement/surprise of the finish is clouding the body of the match. Watching it, I thought "this is exactly the same style match I had with my WWF figures when I was 10." The moves were awesome, but the trading of bombs isn't resonating with me as it seems it did with many on Twitter. Honestly, I think part of it is Cena kicking out of the first pop-up powerbomb halfway through the match. Killed my enthusiasm at the time. Steen's powerbomb had been treated like a death certificate on NXT, with matches coming to a halt and doctors showing up, and even his segments in RAW with Cena put it over as a game ender. Here, it happens.....and then the match goes another 15 mins.
  7. It wasn't until my 20s I realized how lucky I had it as kid. The local small-town Iowa (population 3000) video store I frequented had an outstanding collection of WWF and NWA/WCW tapes. I must have rented every major event from each fed 1985-1990 multiple times. I remember renting the Bash 87 tape with first War Games all the time. They also had a large collection of Coliseum Video comps. I still have copies of World Tour 90 and Best of WWF Vol. 19 I bought in a clearance sale. At some point in 1991-1992, the store stopped carrying WCW and really limited WWF additions. This was my main exposure to non-WWF wrestling because I didn't have cable, so my weekly TV wrestling fix was WWF Superstars in syndication on Saturday mornings after cartoons. I always looked forward to staying at my grandparents, who had cable - then I could see WCW Saturday Night once every 2-3 months. In the mid 90s, my Mom would occasionally take me to a huge video store in Des Moines 20 mins from my house. I believe it was called Movies to Go. Looked like a giant house from the outside, and has housed both a nightclub and Crossfit gym in recent years. This store had a really nice collection of wrestling tapes and I vividly remember renting a comp of New Japan matches under a different name. All I knew is that it was Japanese wrestling and that seemed so exotic to watch when I was 9. I remember seeing Jimmy Snuka on it and shocked he was wearing boots!
  8. I think Cavenario has put in a really nice showing so far, enough to be added on future tours. I don't watch a ton of lucha, so a situation like this is excellent exposure for a guy like him. Has Gedo been wrestling regularly and I completely missed it? Because in what I assume is his return from a long absence of regular action, he has looked incredibly sharp and in great shape. I'm huge fan of the Young Bucks, but Romero is generally not someone who interests me. Credit to both these guys because they drew me into the match to the point I completely stopped what else I was doing. I've seen it before, but I always enjoy the "superkick near count out" sequence. Nifty maneuvering by both men in this battle. Curb stomp on the apron seems like it should me a game ender, but I've never seen that variation before. By the way - does anyone know why it's only Nick Jackson in BOSJ and not Matt as well? Injury? Given their positioning in New Japan, I must say I'm surprised Nick Jackson has dropped some falls already. I expected him as a final four guy. Taguchi is tremendously uninteresting to me. Brings everything down.
  9. Lost in the shuffle in a crazy week of wrestling news is that is Ambrose scoring a pinfall victory over Wyatt on Smackdown - when is the last time Wyatt lost singles on TV? Ever? Another great match between them with a fun finish that played off their recent RAW match. It's pretty fascinating that the top two from a pure win/loss standpoint on active roster (Reigns/Wyatt) aren't on the Chamber card. If Rusev is out w/injury, can they logically put anyone but one of those two in the IC Chamber match? Though, R-Truth is in the match despite getting obliterated by Rusev on RAW - he looks totally foolish being there after this week. Hell, based on RAW, Zack Ryder has more cred to be in than Truth. Wouldn't shock me if they just tossed Stardust in though. If he wrestled like Cody Rhodes in Stardust paint, that would actually be an awesome fit for the match.
  10. Baretta is a guy that, on paper, I should really enjoy - awesome tights, really great babyface fire, does flashy stuff - but I just don't get pumped to watch him at all. I really don't understand it. I feel like I'm being the asshole in this siutation. Maybe if he faced off against a really heelish heel? It's not just in New Japan, it goes back to his WWE stuff, his ROH stuff, what I've seen of him in PWG, etc. And the Roppongi Vice theme music is comically terrible. Chase Owens continues to be that guy that would be 2nd or 3rd best on your local indy show....but somehow is getting booked in New Japan instead of any of the 400 2nd or 3rd best guys in the country. He recently wrestled a really, really talented young guy named Ricky Love - who is considerably more exciting to watch - in Minnesota and it blows my mind someone paid to bring him up to Minnesota from the South. If anything, I'm honestly really impressed Owens is managing to get so many high profile bookings. He's young too, only mid 20s, so he may really develop nicely in the next couple years. Dorada has looked really good, one of the standouts of the tournament thus far. I'm givng him quite a bit of leeway over the other entrants, but Finlay has certainly overachieved in my eyes. Bobby Fish is another one that has really impressed me over the past year. He and O'Reilly are an awesome team and I love, love, love his match with TJ Perkins from the PWG BOLA. I think I'd take O'Reilly over Fish in singles, but the gap is closing. Liger and O'Reilly is a lot of fun and Liger is really bringing it thus far in this tourny. As someone who doesn't follow New Japan's booking super closely...I have no idea what to expect for the final four. I imagine Shelley figured into the mix, if not the winner, but him being out will really make things interesting. Gedo of all people is seemingly going on a run - maybe between thi and te ROH tour, he's making a legitimate comeback?
  11. Does anyone else think that having a ROH lead-in will actually help TNA's viewership in the final months on Destination America? I imagine there's a number of ROH fans who haven't given TNA a watch recently or even WWE/NXT fans that are now interested in checking out where Owens, Zayn, Rollins, etc. came from and can do it with further accessibility. It would be fascinating if some slight boost of interest in TNA - thanks to ROH - leads to someone else providing TNA with yet another chance for last through the year.
  12. Only had a chance to watch the first three matches, but I loved Liger vs Komatsu. Great story of historic veteran on the downswing vs youngster realizing the monumental opportunity presented to him, trying to pull off a shocking win and gain immediate momentum on day 1. Loved Komatsu attacking before the bell but the match gradually turning into Liger being the frustrated grouchy old man. I'm a sucker for wild outside brawling and the early portions of this had some really unexpected moves around the arena. Not very familiar with Komatsu, but incredibly interested to see more of him as he progresses. Great selling and has a real chip on his shoulder. Could be an outstanding cocky heel in a few years time.
  13. After being internally critical of some rough camera work tonight, that was an outstanding camera angle on the Red Arrow. Beautiful shot.
  14. A WWE version of Punked with Dolph Ziggler in the Ashton Kutcher role is actually a show I think the average WWE fan will really enjoy. [EDIT] And may provide even further purpose to the employment of Hornswoggle and Torito.
  15. As a direct-to-video action movie, Cena vs Rusev in an international conflict with a romantic side story was fun to watch. But.....these god damn asinine rules. If you find a gun under the ring and shoot your opponent to death, but he doesn't say "I Quit", you don't win under WWE rules.
