  1. This was Cornette saying obviously absurd things so Brian Last could be the straight man. It's like half their schtick. He says all sorts of wacky shit about products they sponsor that are about as sensible as "you never had to goozle somebody in your daily life?" ("This cereal will grow your bald head back! It will increase the length of your manhood!" "No, no, that's not right...")
  2. This one took my breath away. Nobody else led a career like Terry's; nobody else could have.
  3. This is fantastic, and I liked it quite a bit more than the actual Last Battle. That was a good bloody brawl, but this is an excellent wrestling match that turns into something truly wild. I cut out a detailed summary here because you should see it for yourself, but this is the best thing I've seen in a long time, an absolute career match for both guys. At first interesting and then exciting all the way through. The heat just builds and builds until it boils over. I could maybe ding the offbeat finish (note there is a finish here, it's not actually thrown out like it says above) but it completely works in the context and sets up a rematch. I think this could win a GCW 80s poll and finish top 5-10ish in an "all future JCP/WCW". It's the full monty for me. 5*
  4. NBA level (of a two-way contract for half the rookie minimum)
  5. This is definitely the best of a great series and an easy 4.5 for me. Serious question: is 6/16/84 an unlikely candidate for best shows of the 80s? Certainly any show that has an all-time classic in the boot camp match and a semi main this good this should be up there. Even the #3 is pretty good, Adonis/Murdoch vs Samoans. Yes, the rest of it is random house show shit, but still.
  6. Tito debuted in Florida, hit Mid Atlantic for a year, then Georgia twice. In fact Georgia was his last stop before the WWF years.
  7. Tales from the Territories is a flop. It's like Legends of Wrestling but with much worse editing and a terrible soundtrack, and without all the clips.
  8. I was looking through Cagematch listings because someone asked a question on a match thread years ago, and I just noticed that the night after Starrcade 83, Flair was in St. Louis working 2/3 falls against David Von Erich for 36:00. This fucking guy/era.
  9. I'm four years late to the show, but I've been binging it. Some are better than others. But I can't be the only one who thinks Jericho has sounded totally pilled out--probably benzos--on voiceovers the entire time. It's like putting the playback speed on 0.9x. The classic "drunk but not slurring" Xanax presentation.
  10. They worked a bunch of times that summer and fall. Here's a weird one from October that drew 5,500 in Anaheim. "WWF World Champion Shawn Michaels pinned Goldust at 21:00 with the superkick after kissing him; because of the problems with the top rope earlier in the evening, the bottom rope was moved up and the bout was wrestled without the bottom rope."
  11. I liked that, the flip side of 2.9 crazy nearfall wrestling compared to Rhodes/Rollins, by two guys with much better pacing and drama. Not the best of the night but not the worst of the weekend. But I would need to rewatch it.
  12. "That was hard to watch." Shoot commentary.
  13. I think there's more than enough video evidence of AEW being a slop shop. And I did it because it was funny to me. I only watch WWE a few times a year because it sucks ass too, if that helps.
  14. I'm happy to rewatch that one, I just felt like this was a little more well-rounded. And Bianca was noticeably better this year. It is a shame Sasha is stuck in the multi-tag this time around.
  15. Brief thoughts on night 1 ("the sober night") in ranking form: 1. Belair vs Lynch - the praise for this match is already abundant and it's all true. Easy top 2-3 WWE women's match. A few rough edges away from perfection; fantastic pacing and selling. Every bit of 4.5-4.75*. 2. Miz/Paul vs. Mysterios - a pleasant surprise from douchebag Logan Paul, who fits like a glove doing the Miz's heel act and is competent or better in the ring, with a nice physical presence (although he benefits from the surroundings). And of course the great pro work we expect from Miz and Rey, doing heel/face work and a classic tag format that they could do in their sleep. 3. Austin vs. Owens - like the previous, this gains a lot from exceeding expectations. And yes, from the sheer goofy emotions of the moment. Ever since they announced, all my old lapsed Attitude friends wanted was some Stunners and beer, and boy they got it, plus 14 minutes of classic... okay, classic-reminiscent chaos brawling and old-man bumps. 4. Flair vs. Rousey - not actively bad, but it lived *down* to expectations instead. I enjoyed the old school finish with a ref bump and a simple shock blow instead of 21 finishers, both as a Flair fan and in the sense that it's fine booking for still-green occasional wrestler Rousey to lose like that. Out of booking, of course, she still has major working problems. But this amused me more than... 5. Rhodes vs. Rollins - speaking of living down to expectations and not actively bad, I just can't believe this was the longest match on the damn card--I suppose the closing segment was longer, but this was still 21(!) of match and 30 with packages and intros. And this was probably the least interesting overall. Not a great acquittal work-wise for Cody, Rollins is Rollins, and I had never actually seen the neck tattoo, so I couldn't stop laughing for the first 2 minutes of the match. 6. MacIntyre vs. Corbin - both guys are fine and I like Happy Corbin the character, but this got short shaft on the booking totem and was just kind of there. The rope slaying was neat. NR. Smackdown tag titles match - I was running late and didn't see this, but based on the description and the length I imagine the previous note also fits here.
