I like that these tags always start with Tenryu and rival, because it's the opposite of how most tag matches work where the most anticipated pairing is not the first pairing. That said, Tenryu and Hashimoto never really get to tear into each other, and this match has a nice slow build. Things really get cooking when Fujinami and Tenryu have their second go-round, and watching Tenryu sell Fujinami's open-handed slaps is awesome. Tenryu kneeing Hash in the back of the head from the apron is awesome too. Another great match in the series, with Fujinami getting a submission out of Ishikawa. Not sure I understand that result unless Fujinami will begin playing a larger part in the feud.

This was great stuff, and more reason why this feud rules the fucking earth. Doesn't have the violence of the 4/2 tag with Choshu in Fujinami's place - although this is WAR so the violence is still there - but the interesting sub-story of Fujinami's arm was a really cool addition. Ishikawa just punching him in the arm to break the dragon sleeper was a great spot, and Fujinami going back to it and reapplying it with the OTHER arm rocked as well. Still, this is all about Tenryu and Hashimoto and I am ridiculously excited about the singles matches coming up. These guys having a fucking STARE DOWN is better than most stuff these days; just the best contemptuous facial expressions imaginable. Tenryu kneeing Hash in the back of the head as he's hitting the ropes was an awesome spot. Tenryu's AMAZING KO sell of a Hashimoto kick a little later, just going dead weight in the corner and hitting every turnbuckle on the way down, was even better. Ishikawa puts Fujinami in a Scorpion Deathlock so Hashimoto comes in and threatens to rip his head off. This annoys Tenryu so he flies across the ring and lariats Hash so hard he hurls himself out to the floor. And then both guys start chucking chairs at each other while the partners take it home in the ring.

Loss, where would you put Tenryu on a WOTY list for '93? I recall you saying you were going to come up with a top something or other wrestlers of '93 in one of the match threads, and since you've watched the whole set I can't think of anybody better to ask. At this point I can't see him not winding up in my own top 3 at the end (right now he's my #1).

Slow burn here, but when this got going, it really got going. Great work over Fujinami's arm and Tatsumi showed more intensity here than he has in years. The other highlights--Tenryu's killer enzuigiri, his sell of Hash's payback kick, and Fujinami having to adjust his dragon sleeper--have already been touched on. Not one of the high-end matches of this feud but a high-quality addition. Tenryu vs. Hash has been one of the best builds of any match on any Yearbook.

Such a runaway for feud of the year it isn't even funny. The prematch between these squads with their staredowns is always superb as well. Fujinami got to look like a world beater against Tenryu, albeit briefly, before Tenryu nails Hash from the apron which Hash repays with killer kicks and a DDT. They were all over the place here - Fujinami working submissions, Ishikawa & Tenryu with the big bombs, Hash's stellar strikes. One of my favorite spots was when Hash tagged in you saw on Tenryu's face that he knew some hellacious kicks were coming his way and there was nothing he could do to stop it. Fujinami eventually submits Ishikawa while Hashimoto & Tenryu continue their issue outside. Another excellent that match that continues to build Hashimoto vs. Tenryu as the ultimate conflict in this feud.

***3/4

Other feuds (mainly thinking of the AJPW crew here) exceed the quality of NJPW vs. WAR on a match by match basis, but I don't know that any feud is this much fun.

I appreciated the slow start here as a change of pace to the other matches in this feud. Things really heat up when Fuji and Tenryu start tearing at each other and the match takes off from there. Hash vs. Tenryu feels like a money match that I am dying to see at this point and they are brawling in the crowd when Fuji is able to submit Ishikawa with the dragon sleeper. I didn't think this reached the highs of other matches in this feud but it was still damn good and the feud continues to be great overall. ***3/4

This was okay. It started slow, then picked up the pace in the middle and built to the end.

I continue to be impressed by the team of Tenryu and Ishikawa, who have looked like a veteran team in every match in which they've teamed toether on the set. Their work on Fujinami's arm was top notch, and even though Fujinami got the win, he figures to be feeling the effects for quite a while. I'm not sure if I'd put Tenryu and Ishikawa over American teams like the Bodies and the Blondes, but they may be the best team in Japan right now.

Fujinami way outworked Hash here. I get that they're teasing bigger matches between Hash and Tenryu later, but I thought we'd see more out of Hash than we did regardless. On the positive side, Fujinami's really seen his career take off again as a result of this feud. A lot of people thought he was pretty much done once he dropped the NWA belt to Flair two years ago, but his performances in this feud have proven them wrong quite nicely.

Great veteran move by Fujinami locking in the dragon sleeper with his good arm once it became clear that the other one wouldn't work right. You seldom see wrestlers make allowances for injured body parts when applying their finishers, which makes them look stupid most of the time.

This is a good feud, but it's not nearly the most fun feud of the year. My ability to understand the promos may give my choice an unfair advantage, but I have to go with a feud that hasn't even hit the ring yet as such: Cornette vs. Armstrong.
