[1996-12-16-WWF-Raw] Interview: Bret Hart / Steve Austin vs Vader

Bret does an unscheduled promo about how things have changed since he left and that you can't trust anyone anymore, and that everyone breaks the rules. And really, Bret wasn't approached about turning heel until two weeks before Wrestlemania, which is surprising. Fans chant this and that things at him and you hear everything, which is funny. Bret then announces he will be in the Royal Rumble and sticks around to do commentary.

This is a hell of a match. Vader controls the first few minutes, then Austin takes over and goes crazy, and Vader steps up his game in kind. Austin facing another heel and playing de facto face is an interesting sign of things to come. Bret ends up attacking him at ringside, getting some heat for attacking Austin unprovoked. He locks in a sharpshooter and has to be pulled off of Austin.

Great segment, but again, it amazes me that there was no planned heel turn for him at this point, or at least not one Bret had been presented with.

IIRC:

This was during a period where they ran a bunch of really good brawling style matches with guys who hadn't been feuding for some reason. This was scheduled as the first weeks earlier but Vader was injured, so they ran Austin-Mankind, then Owen-Mankind, and then Austin-Vader finally. The order may be wrong and there may have been more matches (where are they? :( ) but...yeah.

Business is about to pick up. Litteraly. Bret's promo is excellent and you can really see the first steps of his new bitter character showing up there. And then the match, which is a terrific brawling style, with vader looking like Vader because Austin isn't afraid of taking it and giving it back and looking awesome in the process. Then there's the angle, in which Bret kinda looks like a dick, and it's great. Vader vs Austin was a great pairing, it's too bad they never got to work on top of the card together, it would have been an amazing feud. The WWF main event scene is seriously getting hotter at this time.

WHINY BRET! Bret delivers a scathing interview spitting out contempt for just about every other top name in the company--amazing how much heat he gets just for calling Shawn Michaels "prissy." Then he disingenuously claims he's going to do what HBK did last night, which is offer impartial and uninvolved commentary. Austin and Vader have a hell of a brawl, and in addition to the shades of Heel Bret we saw in the interview, Austin unloading on Vader and the crowd going nuts is a similarly prescient sign of things to come. Bret of course breaks his promise and destroys Austin on the floor, which gets Vader pissed off. The main event scene now has 5 guys who all hate each other, plus Undertaker and Mankind hanging around as well. This is a super-hot segment and with its chaotic feel and "shades of grey" characters really feels like the first "1997 Raw"

Bret's promo is amazing. He's been so fed up with the attacks by Austin, HBK getting the spotlight, & everyone getting involved in his title match costing him that he's decided he won't follow by the rules either. Whiny Bret is so great. He's basically right too. I loved him saracastically saying he's going to call it right down the middle as a color commentator during Austin-Vader.

Great brawl. The crowd pops big each time Austin takes Vader down. Austin letting loose after the low blow is probably my favorite moment in the match. Bret gets revenge for Austin clipping him the night before by clipping Austin & putting him in the sharpshooter. Vader doesn't take kindly to Bret interfereing & they have a great pull apart brawl. Bret goes back the sharpshooter on Austin after that forcing officials to pull him off. This whole segment is awesome. It's really great underlying storytelling of Bret coming back to a WWF that is much different from the one he left after WM 12.

Thus begins the Bret heel turn. I don't know if that was the intention, but that's how the promo feels. Bret is pissed at Austin & Shawn for fucking around in his match with Sid the previous night and costing him the belt. I agree with what Bret says in his book that the commentators were quasi-burying on RAW. He was wrestling fucking Fake Razor and Vince was all like I don't know if he will get another chance at the title.

Austin/Vader was great in the same vein as Austin/Mankind not quite as good as that. Austin is so energetic at this point in his career. A bull in a China Shop. He is such a miserable son of a bitch too. Vader gets into it and starts clobbering him. Bret swears up and down he wont interfere, but he does. So much for being a role model, but that was the point. Bret gets a modicum of revenge by applying the Sharpshooter.

Brets promo is great and he feels justified in what he is saying even if it comes across as whiny. This sets the table for 1997. There is someone behind Bret wearing an amazing Olympic style 1996 Mark Henry T Shirt that I want printed again. Vince is already sucking up to Shawn by saying he isn't really responsible for Bret losing last night. Bret is also great in still having a go at Lawler. Beyond that, the match is pretty awesome with some heavy shots all around. Between this and Psic/Regal on Nitro, this may be the best in ring night of 1996 for the Big Two. Austin gets sent to the outside and Bret takes the opportunity to pounce by putting him in a Sharpshooter. Bret is certainly showing more of an edge and as a rarity for 1996, Raw seems like it was the better show overall on this night. ***

Really run match and segment. Austin has so much energy on offense and looks awesome taking it to Vader. His Thesz Press looks especially good here. This definitely had a 1997 RAW feel with tons of grey shading with Bret and Austin truly feeling like one of the top stars of the company. WWF is starting to feel exciting.
