Flair gets us started by continuing to gloat about winning the title at the Royal Rumble when all of the top five contenders in the running for a Wrestlemania title shot (Hogan, Piper, Undertaker, Savage, Sid) were in the ring the night he won the belt, and he outlasted them all. We get the announcement that Hogan will be the one to challenge Flair at Wrestlemania. Sid had already stood up and is furious.

They show reactions of some of the wrestlers. Savage says he wishes it could have been him, but if he couldn't get the shot, he's glad Hogan could. Sid starts screaming at reporters and does a really focused promo.

First, Flair's opening promo was money. I wish we could have gotten Flair in a suit instead of the sweater. Plus the aftermath where Sid comes across as a mad as hell motherfucker is great. i wouldn't fuck with Sid. Hogan really came across as not as big as a star as Flair or Sid.

Great goofy WWF style press conference. Goofy because it tried to be serious, not because it was intentionnally goofy. Yeah, Flair and Sid's promo were great. I can't help but root for Sid here, as it's obvious Tunney is so far up Hogan's ass it's not even funny. Loved Sid's reaction. Hogan's "Yes yes !" is terrible Hogan acting as always and make it even better, you feel Hogan is overacting because he knew he would get the match anyway.

Love the layout with the champ center stage and the top 5 contenders seated across two tables. I wouldn't mind this kind of old school set up more often. We're probably well past it but its got more of a BCS / March Madness feel to it than something out of a comic. It also puts over the Mania title match as a big deal.

The highlights after Flair & crew walked out were Sid's faces when he wasn't named top contender and Savage's over the top hand motions / gestures as he spoke. Just classic.

Those fake camera noises are really distracting. Flair rubs his Rumble victory in our faces one more time. Tunney makes sure to note that he examined each challenger's record as well as the opinion of the public at large, which becomes important. Hogan immediately launches into his standard spiel while Sid stews.

Savage is entertaining as ever, even when kissing Hogan's ass in a role that does not suit him. Sid blames Hogan for the Rumble loss, and rightly so. And what you did, Jack Tunney, WAS BOGUS. THE MOST BOGUS ACT YOU HAVE EVER PULLED OFF. The best heels tend to have justifiable motivation behind them, but man oh man, I don't think a heel (or soon-to-be heel) has ever been more in the right than Sid was here.

I liked the press conference itself, but it makes Hogan look terrible after the fact. If he's so dedicated to being WWF champion again, why give Sid a second thought, even after what's about to happen at SNME? Just write it off as an inferior's jealousy and forget about it. You have the World title match you claim you want in your hand, for crying out loud.

Actually, the Hogan/Sid match would have made more sense if Tunney had "chosen" Savage to start with. Sid could still claim that Hogan cost him the title at the Rumble, while (using the whole "public opinion" bit) Hogan could claim that Sid caused his Hulkamaniacs to doubt him because of what happened between them, which led to Tunney not choosing him for a match which he believes should have been his. That's so much better than "my revenge is more important than any title", which I'm sure will be Hogan's reason for giving up the title match and signing to fight Sid.

Kudos to Vince and company for making this look more legitimate than any so-called "press conference" since the one where Hogan and Andre signed the contract to meet before Mania III. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if there were actually some reporters there, since I saw a "Fox 23" microphone during Savage's interview afterward. Yes, that type of thing is easy to copy or simulate, but the WWF aired their syndicated programming on Fox stations for the most part at this time, so it's possible that a station or two either sent reporters or (more likely) loaned Vince equipment to use.

Flair's lost any and all ability to be calm and low-key. If this had been a 100% legit press conference, he'd have been either laughed at, branded a lunatic, or both. This isn't supposed to be a random Saturday night on TBS in 1986, Naitch. Show at least a little decorum (by mainstream media standards, not wrestling standards).

Why do people bemoan the fact that Savage does such a good job kissing Hogan's ass? What's he supposed to do, attack him on sight every time they meet? If they're both fellow faces, Hogan's going to be the top dog, and who would buy a Savage heel turn now after all the wedding buildup and the feud with Jake? Randy at least acknowledged their problems in the past, which is more than most faces do in his situation; the only other guy who did that I know of is Piper.

Gene tried a little too hard to make this seem chaotic. One warning from him to the "reporters" would have been sufficient, especially since even the marks could probably figure out that this wasn't real. (If it was, how come their local stations didn't cover it on the news?)
