Excellent match. Canek defended the UWA World Heavyweight Championship. This was during his tenth reign as UWA World Heavyweight Champion. Dos Caras pinned Canek to win the first fall. Canek pinned Dos Caras to win the second fall. Dos Caras pinned Canek to win the third fall. Dos Caras won the UWA World Heavyweight Championship for a third time. A great display of matwork, especially by Dos Caras. I liked how they were teasing a double pin on a several occasions. Dos Caras was for sure one of the toughest challengers Canek had ever faced.

It was kinda hard to figure out who was the rudo in this since Canek change more times than Lawler and Dundee did in his career.

I think they were both babyfaces in this match, because this was still from back when Canek was the top star of the UWA. I believe he started to turn more often during later stages of his career.

And I know you were probably just kidding, but he sure didn't turn more often than Lawler and Dundee.

What a great mat wrestling clinic. It was the type of work where you could see these guys headling St. Louis in the 70's. They told a beautiful story with Caras looking amazing. Canek was very good too, but was sloppy on a couple of spots. I thought the finish of the 2nd fall was awesome, but it kinda felt out of place with how great Canek was selling the limb injury. Again these are minor quibbles to a kick ass match.

The other thing of note was it must have been pretty damn cold. You could see the steam coming out of the wrestlers breaths because of how cold it was. I went back to the old Observers and they mention how cold it was. The Observer also mentioned how people rated it as a 4- 4 1/4* match.

It was a nice mixture of matwork and high flying early on. After taking 1 fall Dos began to work over the leg of El with a nice variety of holds. Like others have said a mat clinic. The Champion hit one big move to level the score but Caras was right back on him. Had plenty of near falls down the stretch, the slow count adding to the drama. In the end Caras had more energy left thanks to the earlier damage inflicted and this led him to the victory. A logical and well constructed contest.

Sound technical work early. While I can appreciate what they were doing on the mat, most of it just wasn't clicking for me. While early on I was caught off guard by how quickly the first couple falls in some lucha matches would conclude, its no longer feeling quite as strange as it did initially (up to about mid-April on the yearbook).

Canek did a good job selling Caras' work on his knee from the second fall into the third before finishing with a rana where the execution looked a bit off.

**3/4

Definite lucha MOTY (since Santo/Casas gets an incomplete) to this point. Another match I'd point to as being really accessible to lucha novices--the matwork is unique but also carries an air of legitimacy to it, and it's all very focused and body part-oriented on Caras' part, with Canek doing a fine job of selling the leg/knee throughout the contest. Also a very "big match" feel with the UWA title at stake between two legends. That adds weight to all the double-fall teases, but they go to a real finish anyway. Outstanding bout, one of the 5 best of the (very young) year.

Most of the other posters hace said what I was going to. I really liked this match, especially Caras' work on the leg and Canek's selling of it even when he was hitting big kicks on the way to taking the second fall. For a match that was mostly matwork, this one never dragged or felt boring, and I liked how the crowd exploded when Caras finally scored the winning fall.

I saw this in an earlier match and thought it was a mistake, but apparently refs in Mexico can count pinfalls on both guys during a knockout spot. In the U.S, Canada, and Japan, of course, the refs treat that situation like a possible countout. Speaking of double pins, I've never seen one teased three times in a row like it was here. It added to the drama, and if one of them had actually reached a three-count it might have been the first finish of its kind that didn't feel like a complete copout.

Is ramming another wrestler's body parts into the canvas frowned upon in Mexico? I noticed the ref getting on Caras' case for doing it several times during the second fall.

Was that Mil in his brother's corner? One of the masks certainly looked like one Mil might wear.

Speaking of Mil, I once heard on a Coliseum Video tape that he never wore the same mask twice. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

I think the ref was getting on Caras for not breaking clean off the ropes. He could have kept it shorter than he did both times.

Really good mat match with great selling by Canek and great submission work by Caras. Canek is awkward at times then surprises you with his execution others. Both are guys I need to see more of.

Lovely match. I wish I had like a hundred Dos Caras singles matches available. His legwork was awe inspiring. He basically locked up Canek repeatedly and then tried to sprain his ankle for like 20 minutes straight. There is the joke that at some point UWA only existed to give Canek and his relatives titles, but he looked good here. He was ready to wrestle, and he sold that legwork. Using a bunch of spin kicks for a comeback was a little weird though. Cool 3rd fall that had the fans by the balls with the nearfalls. Canek was showing so much ass here I was sure he would win, so the match worked me too.
