[1992-06-06-USWA-TV] Interview: Eddie Gilbert

Gilbert does another really good promo hyping up his upcoming Mid South Coliseum match with Lawler. Gilbert shows PWI and I think New Wave Wrestling magazines to show that he is on the top 10 and Lawler is not, and also that he's the wrestler of the month in New Wave Wrestling. The story of the feud seems to be that Lawler has been a great champion and taken on all comers for a long time, but Gilbert is ready to replace him.

Gilbert hits up the newsstand to get some wrestling magazines. I liked him trying to say he is not trying to be Lawler since he's better than him. But wasn't so sure about showing off the PWI rankings and bragging about being 6th in the world. Yeah, I'm sure there are some quality people ahead of him but it would have been most effective if he was actually ranked 1st.

Gilbert is out with PWI rankings to show he's better than Lawler. I don't know how this would play locally, but it would seem like a big deal if someone fighting for my local title, in my local promotion, was ranked #6 in the world. But if you view your local promotion as the world, well then maybe you look at things differently.

A study in contrasts: Eddie Gilbert's reaction upon his #6 ranking with Stan Hansen's the year before.

Tremendous promo, with Gilbert rattling off the names Lawler has faced and more or less declaring this to be the final showdown. No DQ, no countouts, no holding up of any belts. I'd like to think we'll get a clean unification finish but I'm about 99% sure that isn't going to happen.

I don't think the point of the magazine thing was that Eddie was number six; I think it was that he was number six while Lawler was unranked. That's worth bragging about, especially in Memphis where Lawler's reigned practically unopposed for so long.

The promo here is excellent up until the last few moments, when Eddie loses control and starts yelling. Up until then, he was really making a case why he should be considered the man in Memphis once he beats Lawler. And there's the crux of Eddie's beef, both on-camera and in real life: plenty of guys have pinned Lawler or beaten him up, and Bill Dundee even sent him out of town for a while. But no one's ever taken Lawler's place and kept it for long, mostly because Lawler himself simply wouldn't allow it as co-owner of the promotion. Even though Eddie doesn't talk in those terms on camera, it's hard not to feel his frustration on that basis.

As Pete said, though, I doubt much will change here. There's going to be a screwjob of some kind, and while Lawler may or may not leave the MSC with the Unified belt, his crown will remain untouched. No one, not even someone with Eddie's obvious qualifications, will be allowed to shine brighter than him, ever. As Lawler begins to split time between Memphis and the WWF in the months ahead, we'll see just how much that hurts the Memphis product.

Interesting that they cut Eddie off just as he was mentioning his family. Was that a coincidence, or was that timed to possibly stop an on-air mention of Doug for whatever reason?

I'm surprised Lawler allowed himself to be connected to Andy Kaufman's death in any way, even in heel promos, when everyone knew Andy had died of cancer. I guess he rationalized it by saying that Andy would have wanted it that way.

I loved the promo, he should be taunting Lawler with stuff like that.  Does me being North Dakotan make me a hick by Gilbert's logic?  One great thing about Gilbert/Lawler as a feud is both have legitimate beefs with the other that shine through.  Jerry doesn't like that Eddie wants to be him, which is natural.  And Eddie resents not being able to be the man in his hometown.

I am with the two above me who say that there will be no clean finish here.
